Chapter 10 - 10:

^^^*^^^^*^^^^*^^^^*^^^^*^^^^*^^^

The road out of town and into the next stretched unusually empty. Rain sat still in the passenger seat, staring out the window.

The awkward tension in the car felt heavier than it should have been. She wasn't sure what to do with Luke. How to start a conversation.

They weren't close. Not even remotely. And now, they were stuck together in his car, sent out by someone else like it was the most natural decision in the world.

"Nora.." She mumbled her name, exhaling softly through her nose. Next time she was going to argue back, instead of easily giving in to her.

Luke glanced at her briefly before returning his eyes back to the road. "You okay?"

Rain blinked, his question slightly caught her off guard. "Yeah." She said quickly. Then, after a beat she nodded once. "Yeah, I'm fine."

A moment passed, then Luke adjusted his grip on the steering wheel. "The town…," he said slowly. "It's never been this empty."

Rain shifted her gaze back to the window.

"Yeah," she agreed. "It's practically deserted."

"Feels like a ghost town." Luke added.

His words lingered in the air longer than expected.

"What about your parents?" He asked suddenly, avoiding the quiet by all means.

"You never said anything about them at school."

Rain looked back at him, she swallowed. "I..I couldn't reach mine either," she added quickly. "This morning."

Luke glanced at her, then back at the road. "…oh." He said simply.

The silence returned again, but it was less sharp this time.

Rain hesitated, then spoke again, faster this time. "You were…really calm earlier. At school. The way you were talking and everything."

Luke took a quick look at her, and let out a short laugh. "Me? Calm?"

Rain nodded.

"No." He shook his head immediately. "I was freaking out."

She blinked. "You were?"

"Yes," he said, flexing his fingers slightly on the wheel. "You should've seen my hands. I couldn't keep them still."

Rain stared at him. Her eyes wide, genuinely surprised. Then a small smile slipped out.

"Well… you looked cool."

She froze. The words came out before she could stop them.

Her eyes widened instantly.

Why did I say that?

Luke glanced at her, surprise visible on his face, then he smiled properly. "Thanks." He looked forward again.

Rain turned back to the window, but the air wasn't uncomfortable anymore. It felt…lighter. She exhaled quietly.

Okay, that wasn't bad. She thought, a smile still etched on her face.

Suddenly, a sharp sound cracked through the car. The radio had turned on itself.

Both of them flinched. Luke jerked slightly in his seat. "What the…"

His hands moved quickly to the controls. "Is this broken or something…" he said, about to switch it off.

"Wait." Rain's voice cut in fast. "Don't turn it off."

Luke paused, his fingers hovering over the button. "Why?"

She leaned closer, her eyes narrowing. "Listen."

Static filled the car, broken and unstable.

Then words started cutting through, not clearly. Fragments.

"...crowded….place…"

"....unsa…fe…"

Luke brows furrowed slightly. "What is…"

"Shhhh," Rain snapped without thinking, her focus fully on the radio. Luke shut his mouth immediately.

The voice on the radio continued. Breaking in and out like something fighting to stay alive.

"...stay…in…doors…"

"...dangerous…"

"...shelter….house…"

Rain's breathing slowly became uneven.

Luke's grip tightened on the wheel, then a siren tore through the sound.

It was loud. Sharp and overwhelming. They both flinched hard.

"Ah!" Luke jerked instinctively, hands fumbling as he tried to shut it off.

Rain's eyes flickered upwards. Her expression dropped instantly. "Stop!" she shouted, but it was too late.

Luke had looked away from the road for just a moment.

"Luke…watch out." Rain's voice came too late. There was something that was ahead of them.

Luke swore under his breath and yanked the wheel hard. The car swerved violently, the tires screeched. The car spun briefly before he slammed his feet on the brake.

The impact was intense. Rain's body lurched forward, her head striking the dashboard with a dull, sickening hit.

Then everything stopped. Only the faint echo of the siren remained in their ears.

Luke struggled to regain himself, his head aching from the impact. "Rain!" He immediately unbuckled his seatbelt, and turned to her. "Rain…hey, are you okay?"

Rain blinked slowly, her vision blurred slightly at the edges, her ears still rang. A warm sting spread near her forehead.

"Shit…" Luke cursed, moving closer. "Rain. Can you hear me?"

She swallowed, wincing. "Yeah…"

Luke exhaled, relief flashing across his face for a second, then quickly vanished. His eyes lifted past her, his expression dropped.

"This can't be real…" His mouth fell slightly open.

Rain's brows pulled together into a frown.

With the strength she had regained, carefully she pushed the door open and stepped out.

Her legs felt unsteady as it landed on the hard ground.

"Rain, careful." Luke said quickly, following her out.

She ignored him and walked a few steps forward, warm blood dripping down her forehead. Then stopped.

Right in front of them was the town boundary sign.

Goodbye and Thank you for coming to Sunset Cove.

She looked beyond it, and there was nothing.

A wall of thick grey fog stood where the road should have continued.

It wasn't drifting. Nor was it moving.

It was just there.

Solid. Dense and out of place.

Luke came up slowly behind her. His voice dropped. "What the hell…is this?"

Rain stared at it for a second longer. The silence in the air felt heavier than the crash.

Then she spoke quietly.

"I don't think…" she exhaled, "we are getting to the next town today."

The edge of the town ended too cleanly. But the fog didn't stop there, it stretched through the trees on both sides of the road.

Swallowing the branches and under growth whole.

She stood a few steps from the boundary sign, and beyond it there was nothing more.

Just grey that refused to end.

Luke stepped closer beside her. "What…could it be?"

She swallowed, her throat felt tight. "I'm not sure…"

Luke didn't ask further questions, he simply stared at the fog. His gaze studied it like it was a problem he could solve by looking through it hard enough.

He lifted his hand towards it.

"Don't," Rain said sharply and added. "What if it's poisonous?"

His hands stopped mid-air, reflecting on her words.

Rain scanned the ground, her eyes fell on a thin stick near the road side, half-buried in dust. She picked it up and held it out.

"Use this instead."

Luke took the stick without arguing. He stepped forward and pushed the stick into the fog, and it slipped through with ease.

Luke squinted, tilting his head. He pushed the stick farther, sweeping it through the fog, left and right. But nothing changed, it moved freely like the thick grey fog wasn't even there.

Rain's eyes widened slightly. "This doesn't even make sense..."

Luke pulled back the stick and stared at it as though it had betrayed him. "It's just fog." He said, his tone faintly uncertain.

The fog didn't seem like the kind they knew. It didn't drift, it just stood there too still to be natural.

"Could this be a natural phenomenon?" Luke tilted his head as he stared at it.

Rain gave a small shrug, not of agreement or disagreement. Just the fact she didn't know what it could be.

Luke's eyes dropped to the stick again. "I want to try something." He muttered faintly.

Rain turned to him, but before she could ask what he meant, Luke threw the stick into the fog as it disappeared immediately.

A second passed, then…

Tap.

A faint sound echoed back from somewhere inside it. It didn't sound close, nor was it far either. Just undefined.

"I heard that.." Rain's eyes narrowed.

Luke shook his head, "Me too." He said quietly, "But we can't see it."

The silence between them stretched for a second longer. Luke stepped closer again and as though she could read his thoughts, Rain already knew his next plan.

"Luke, Don't." Her body tightened.

"It's just fog." He repeated softer this time, like he was trying to convince himself more than her. "We've walked through fog before."

"This isn't like before." Rain blurted out. " This could be… bad."

He glanced at her with a small smile across his face, then he released a tired breath. "We can never know something is bad, unless we test it."

Rain stared at him, her brows slowly knitted together.

His gaze returned back to the grey fog in front of him, then added. "If you are scared, just talk."

Rain's eyes narrowed.

Luke continued, "Keep me talking while I go in."

"That's not—"

But he was already stepping in. One foot into the grey, and then the other.

He was gone.

There was no sound, just the empty space where he had stood. Rain's chest tightened.

"Luke?" She called. Patiently waiting for an answer, but there was none.

"Luke," she called again. "Can you hear me?"

Still nothing.

Her fingers curled at her sides. "Luke, I swear–"

A shape burst out of the fog, directly in front of her. She flinched, taking a quick step backwards.

Luke stumbled out, coughing slightly like he had been holding his breath all through.

Shock flickered across Rain's face.

"You..you scared me." She stopped, shaking her head. "Why weren't you responding?"

He straightened, squinting as though adjusting himself to reality. "Sorry." Luke replied, "It was hard to hear you in there."

Rain's eyes sharpened. "You couldn't hear me?"

"I could." Luke pointed vaguely behind him. "But the deeper I went, it got…weird"

"Weird how?" Rain's brows furrowed.

Luke hesitated. "Your voice,….it came all muffled."

Rain glanced at the fog again. Luke stared at her, rubbing the back of his neck. "And, it was completely dark." He added. "I could barely see anything, didn't know where I was going.

It felt like night. But worse."

Rain exhaled, then finally she spoke. "We should go back. We wouldn't be able to go through today."

Luke nodded his head. "Yeah," he said. "I agree."

Rain turned first, but her eyes still lingered on the grey wall for a moment longer. It didn't move or change.

But for some reason, the wall felt… alive. And it had noticed them. She swallowed once, then followed Luke back into the car.
