Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 : I will save you by my life.

Aeirin stood there for a long time.

Without moving.

Without speaking.

The world around her was quiet.

Too quiet.

In front of her, those few fragile lives moved slowly—carefully—like they were afraid that even the ground beneath them might betray them.

And maybe… it already had.

Her eyes followed their every movement.

Every small step.

Every hesitant breath.

They weren't living.

They were surviving.

And that difference…

broke something inside her.

Aeirin slowly sat down on the cold ground.

Her hands resting beside her.

Her eyes still fixed on them.

"So this is what's left…" she whispered.

Not a world full of life.

Not forests filled with voices.

Just this.

A few remaining heartbeats…

fighting against silence.

Her chest tightened.

"If I leave them here…"

Her voice trembled slightly.

"…they'll die."

The words felt heavy.

Too real.

Too certain.

Because she could already see it.

The slow ending.

The quiet disappearance.

The way they would vanish…

without anyone even knowing they were ever here.

Her fingers clenched slightly against the ground.

"And if I take them back…"

She stopped.

Because that thought…

was even worse.

Images flashed in her mind.

Cold rooms.

Bright lights.

Silent observation chambers.

Machines watching.

Humans studying.

Not seeing them as life.

But as opportunity.

"They'll turn you into experiments…" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Her eyes filled slowly.

Not suddenly.

Not dramatically.

But quietly.

Like everything else in this world.

"I can't…" she shook her head softly.

"I can't let that happen to you…"

The small creatures shifted slightly.

One of them took a hesitant step forward.

Then stopped.

Watching her.

Aeirin didn't move.

Didn't reach out.

Because she knew…

trust was not something she could ask for.

Not in a world that had already taken everything from them.

"I don't know what to do…" she whispered.

Her voice cracked.

For the first time…

she wasn't thinking like a thinker.

Or a creator.

Or someone who believed she could fix things.

She was just… human.

Confused.

Afraid.

Helpless.

Tears slipped quietly from her eyes.

Falling onto the dry ground beneath her.

Disappearing without a trace.

"I found you…" she said softly,

"…but maybe I'm too late."

The wind moved gently around her.

Carrying nothing.

Saying nothing.

Aris stood behind her.

Silent.

Observing.

"Aeirin," Aris spoke calmly, "recommended action: report discovery. Probability of species survival increases under controlled preservation."

Aeirin let out a faint, broken laugh.

"Survival?" she whispered.

"Is that what you call it?"

Her voice wasn't angry.

Just tired.

"They won't live…" she said slowly.

"They'll just exist… the way everything else does."

Her eyes lifted toward the creatures again.

"They don't need to survive like that…"

"They deserve to live."

Silence followed.

Deep.

Heavy.

Aris did not respond.

Because there was no programmed answer for something like that.

Aeirin wiped her tears slowly.

But they didn't stop.

Her heart felt like it was being pulled in two directions.

One side—

logic.

Safety.

Control.

The other—

freedom.

Life.

Risk.

And no matter which one she chose…

she would lose something.

Her voice trembled again.

"If I keep you hidden…"

"…I might fail."

She looked at them.

Her eyes soft.

Broken.

"And if I give you to them…"

"…I'll lose you anyway."

The truth settled in slowly.

Painfully.

There was no perfect choice.

Only a choice she would have to live with.

Aeirin lowered her head.

Her shoulders trembling slightly.

"I don't want to be the reason you disappear…"

A small sound came from one of the creatures.

Soft.

Almost like a response.

Aeirin looked up.

Slowly.

For a moment…

their eyes met.

And in that moment…

something changed.

Not in the world.

Not in the situation.

But inside her.

Her fear didn't disappear.

Her pain didn't fade.

But something stronger rose beneath it.

A decision.

Aeirin took a deep, unsteady breath.

"I don't know if I can save you…" she whispered.

Her voice was still soft.

Still fragile.

"But I know one thing."

Her eyes steadied.

"I won't hand you over to a world that forgot how to care."

The wind moved again.

This time… it didn't feel empty.

It felt like something had shifted.

Aeirin slowly stood up.

Her legs slightly weak.

But her resolve… stronger than before.

"We'll find another way."

Not the easy way.

Not the safe way.

But the right one.

And for the first time since she found them…

Aeirin was no longer just afraid.

She was determined.

Even if the world stood against her…

Even if she failed…

Even if everything fell apart—

She would try.

Because some lives…

were worth risking everything for.
