Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Dawn

The light faded.

The battlefield was silent. The vampires who had not fled were ash, their bodies scattered on the wind. The wolves who had fought were standing, wounded, bleeding, but alive. The sun was rising, painting the snow gold and red, the colors of victory and sacrifice.

I stood in the center of it all, my chest heaving, my body screaming, my soul singing. I was the wolf king. I had led my pack through fire. I had faced the Lords of the Night and won.

I had kept my promise.

Lira found me at the edge of the battlefield, her face streaked with blood and ash, her eyes bright with tears. She ran to me, her arms around my neck, her voice a whisper in my ear.

"You came back."

"I promised."

She pulled back, her hands cupping my face. "Is it over?"

I looked at the battlefield, at the wolves who were tending their wounds, at the sun rising over a world that was finally, finally waking up.

"It's over. For now."

She smiled. "Then come home."

I took her hand, and we walked back toward the village, toward the wolves who were waiting for us, toward the future that was finally, finally ours.

The pack gathered that night around the great oak.

The tree had stood at the center of our territory for a thousand years. It had seen alphas rise and fall, packs form and scatter, wolves live and die. It had seen everything.

Tonight, it saw something new.

I stood at the head of the clearing, my pack around me, my allies beside me, my mate at my side. The wolves who had fought, who had bled, who had survived. The wolves who had become something more than they had ever been.

"We have won a battle," I said. "But the war is not over. The vampires will return. The darkness will come again. But we will be ready. We will be wolves. We will be hunters. We will be protectors."

I raised my voice, letting it carry across the clearing, across the forest, across the territory that had been bought with blood.

"We are the wolves of Red Oak. We are the wolves who stood at the border and did not run. We are the wolves who fought the Lords of the Night and won. And when the darkness comes again, we will be waiting."

The howl that rose from the pack was the loudest I had ever heard.

I dismissed the window and looked at the pack. They were laughing, crying, howling, celebrating. They were alive. They were wolves. They were home.

Lira took my hand, her fingers lacing through mine. "What happens now?"

I looked at her—at the woman I had loved and lost and found again, at the future that was finally, finally ours.

"Now we build."
