The silence in the maintenance conduit was a physical weight. It was thick with the smell of ozone and the metallic tang of fear. Sasuke's question, "How did you find me?" echoed in the cramped darkness long after the words were spoken. Naruto's lie, "I just knew," felt like a flimsy shield against a coming storm.
Kakashi was the first to break the silence. He didn't look at Naruto, but at the sealed grate behind them. "The purge protocol will have locked down this entire sector. We can't go back the way we came." He turned his head, his visible eye a gleam of sharp intelligence in the gloom. "Naruto. Which way?"
The question was a test. Naruto could feel it. He closed his eyes, letting the crimson interface flood his vision. The map of the fortress was a complex web of tunnels and chambers, but one route pulsed with a green light of opportunity.
[OPTIMAL ESCAPE PATH: MAINTENANCE CONDUIT GAMMA-9 TO CENTRAL TRANSPORT HUB.] [DISTANCE: 400 METERS.] [ENEMY PRESENCE: LIGHT.]
"This way," Naruto said, pointing into the darkness. "There's a transport hub. About four hundred meters from here. It's our best shot at getting out of this sector."
He didn't look at Sasuke, but he could feel the other boy's gaze boring into him. It wasn't a look of gratitude. It was a look of intense, analytical scrutiny.
"You just know that?" Sasuke's voice was low, laced with a new, dangerous edge. He was weak, his body trembling, but his mind was as sharp as a kunai. "In this maze? You can just feel a transport hub?"
Naruto's head snapped around, his own frustration boiling over. "What's your problem, Sasuke? I just got you out of there! Are you complaining?"
"I'm not complaining," Sasuke shot back, pushing himself up against the wall, his pride warring with his exhaustion. "I'm asking a question. You moved like you had a map. You fought like you knew the enemy's every move. Don't tell me that was just 'feeling my chakra.' That's a lie."
"Stop it! Both of you!" Sakura's voice was strained, tears welling in her eyes. "We're alive! That's all that matters! Can't you just be grateful for that?"
"Gratitude doesn't explain the impossible," Sasuke retorted, his eyes never leaving Naruto's.
"That's enough," Kakashi's voice cut through the tension like a blade. He pushed himself off the wall, his presence filling the narrow tunnel. "Sasuke is right to be suspicious. And Naruto, you're right to be focused on the mission." He looked from one boy to the other. "Right now, we are a team that is trapped deep inside a hostile fortress. Our only priority is survival. Naruto, you will lead us to this transport hub. We will follow you. But know this," his gaze hardened, fixing on Naruto, "when we are safe, you and I are going to have a long talk. About all of it."
It wasn't a threat. It was a promise. And it settled the argument for now.
Naruto gave a curt nod, his jaw tight, and started crawling down the conduit. The others followed in a tense, single-file line. The darkness was absolute, broken only by the faint glow of Kakashi's Sharingan and the soft green light of Sakura's medical jutsu as she periodically checked on Sasuke.
After ten minutes of silent, arduous crawling, Naruto held up a hand. He pointed to a ventilation cover on the floor of the conduit. "Below us. The hub."
They carefully removed the grate and peered down. It was a massive, cavernous space, dimly lit by blue emergency lights. Several sleek, silent monorail-like vehicles were parked at platforms, ready for departure. A small squad of four guards in black Syndicate armor patrolled the area near the main control booth.
"Only four," Sakura whispered. "We can take them."
"It's not that simple," Naruto said, his eyes distant as he read the data only he could see. [ANALYSIS: GUARDS ARE EQUIPPED WITH CHAKRA-SENSING ALARMS. DIRECT ASSAULT HAS 87% PROBABILITY OF ALERTING THE ENTIRE HUB.] "They have sensors. If we use jutsu, they'll know we're here."
"Then we don't use jutsu," Kakashi said simply. "We do this the old-fashioned way. Stealth and taijutsu. Sakura, you and I will take out the two on the left. Naruto, you and Sasuke take the two on the right."
Sasuke bristled. "I'm not a child. I can handle myself."
"You can barely stand," Kakashi countered, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Naruto will create the opening. You just need to be ready to deliver the final blow. Can you do that?"
Sasuke's jaw clenched, but he gave a reluctant nod. It galled him to be so weak, to be a liability.
Naruto dropped silently to the floor below, landing in a crouch behind a large cargo container. He formed a single, quick hand sign. "Shadow Clone Jutsu." Two clones appeared, silent and grim. They didn't scream or charge. They melted into the shadows, moving with a purpose that was chillingly precise.
Kakashi and Sakura moved to their positions. Naruto looked at Sasuke, who had lowered himself down with Sakura's help. "Ready?" Naruto asked.
Sasuke just glared at him, but his eyes were fixed on the guard in front of them, his Sharingan flickering to life, the tomoe spinning slowly. He was analyzing, looking for an opening.
Naruto's clones moved. One threw a small rock, clattering it against a far wall. The guards turned their heads towards the sound. In that instant of distraction, the second clone darted out, its movements a blur, and struck the back of one guard's neck with a precise chop. The guard crumpled silently.
The remaining three guards shouted in alarm, raising their rifles. But it was too late. Kakashi and Sakura were already on them, a whirlwind of silent, brutal efficiency. The last guard, the one Sasuke was targeting, turned his rifle towards Naruto.
"Now, Sasuke!" Naruto yelled.
Sasuke didn't have the strength for a grand fireball. Instead, he did something simpler, something more basic. He gathered what little chakra he had and formed a tiny, concentrated needle of fire in his hand. He flicked his wrist, and the small, superheated projectile shot through the air, striking the guard's weapon. The metal glowed red-hot, forcing the man to drop it with a cry of pain.
In that split second, Naruto was on him, his fist lashing out and knocking the man unconscious.
It was over in seconds. The hub was silent once more.
As they regrouped by the lead transport, a loud, grinding sound echoed from the far end of the hub. A massive, heavily armored blast door began to slide open, revealing a squad of six Cerebral Assassins, their red optical sensors glowing like hungry embers.
"Get on the transport!" Kakashi yelled, pushing them towards the open door.
Naruto hesitated, his mind racing. The system was screaming alerts. [MULTIPLE HIGH-THREAT TARGETS. ENGAGEMENT NOT ADVISED.] But they weren't going to make it.
Sasuke, leaning against the side of the transport, saw the same thing Naruto did. But his Sharingan saw something more. "Naruto!" he called out, his voice strained but clear. "The lead one! Its left shoulder joint! The armor plating is misaligned. When it moves, there's a gap. A power conduit is exposed."
Naruto's eyes widened as the same information flashed across his vision. [NEW DATA: WEAK POINT CONFIRMED. EXPOSED POWER CONDUIT.]
The System had missed it. Or rather, it hadn't had the context to see its significance. But Sasuke's eyes had.
For the first time since this nightmare began, Naruto didn't feel alone. He looked at Sasuke, a flicker of understanding passing between them. It wasn't forgiveness. It wasn't even trust. It was something else. It was the recognition that they were stronger together.
"Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!" Naruto roared, creating a small army of clones. They swarmed the lead assassin, a chaotic, suicidal wave of orange. The machine's predictive systems were overwhelmed, unable to process so many identical targets at once.
As it swatted and destroyed clones, its left arm lashed out. In that instant, the misaligned armor plate shifted, revealing the thin, glowing cable Sasuke had seen.
"Sakura!" Naruto yelled.
Sakura didn't need to be told twice. She channeled every ounce of her strength into her legs and launched herself across the platform like a rocket. Her fist, glowing with chakra, slammed into the exposed conduit.
There was a brilliant flash of light and a deafening explosion of sparks. The lead assassin seized up, its entire body convulsing as its power system fried, and it collapsed in a heap of smoking metal, blocking the path of the others.
It was the opening they needed.
They scrambled onto the transport just as the doors began to close. Kakashi slammed his hand on the control panel, and the vehicle lurched to life, speeding away into the dark tunnel, leaving the assassins and the fortress behind.
Naruto sank to the floor, his body trembling with exhaustion. Across from him, Sasuke slumped against the wall, his eyes closed.
After a long moment, Sasuke opened his eyes. He looked at Naruto, his expression unreadable. Then, he gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod.
It wasn't an answer. But for now, it was enough.
