Chapter 26 - Trial by Flame and Flesh

The forest was alive again.

Not with calm.

Not with silence.

But with tension.

Ravin moved steadily between the towering trees, his steps controlled, his breathing calm. The days of training had reshaped him—not just his body, but his awareness. Every sound carried meaning. Every movement had purpose.

This was no longer exploration.

This was a test.

"…Let's see what I've become."

His voice was quiet, but firm.

The mana within him responded instantly—fire pulsing beneath his skin, healing energy flowing like a second heartbeat. Balanced. Controlled.

Ready.

A sudden crack echoed through the forest.

Ravin stopped.

His eyes narrowed.

"…Something's here."

The ground trembled slightly.

Heavy steps.

Slow.

But powerful.

Then—

It emerged.

From between the trees, a massive creature stepped forward, its body covered in dark, hardened scales. Its form resembled a hybrid between a lizard and a beast, its limbs thick, its claws digging deep into the earth with each step.

Its eyes locked onto Ravin.

Cold.

Hungry.

Dangerous.

Ravin exhaled slowly.

"…Perfect."

No fear.

Only focus.

The creature roared, a deep, vibrating sound that shook the air itself. Without hesitation, it charged forward, its massive body moving with shocking speed for its size.

Ravin didn't retreat.

He stepped forward.

Mana ignited.

His sword flared to life.

Flame erupted along its edge, bright and controlled—

And beneath it—

Healing energy pulsed quietly.

The moment had come.

The creature lunged.

Ravin moved.

Faster.

Cleaner.

He shifted to the side, narrowly avoiding the crushing impact as claws tore through the ground where he stood moments before. Without pause, he countered—his blade slicing across the creature's flank, flames bursting outward.

Impact.

The scales resisted.

But not completely.

A shallow cut formed.

The creature roared in anger.

Ravin landed lightly, his body already recovering from the strain of the movement.

"…Good."

His eyes sharpened.

"…It works."

The creature attacked again, swinging its massive tail with devastating force. Ravin jumped back, but the shockwave still hit him, sending him sliding across the ground.

Pain surged.

But—

It faded instantly.

Healing energy activated.

His muscles stabilized.

His breathing remained steady.

Ravin smiled slightly.

"…Now this is different."

He dashed forward again.

This time, faster.

More aggressive.

His sword moved in fluid arcs, each strike enhanced by fire, each movement supported by healing. The balance was real now—not theory, not training.

Combat.

The creature adapted, its attacks becoming more precise, its movements faster. Claws slashed through the air, forcing Ravin into constant motion.

But he didn't fall behind.

He matched it.

Step for step.

Strike for strike.

A claw grazed his side—

Blood.

Pain.

Then—

Gone.

He kept moving.

No hesitation.

No break.

"…Flame of Renewal…"

The words left his lips quietly.

And his body responded.

His movements accelerated.

Not in speed alone—

But in rhythm.

Attack.

Recover.

Attack again.

Seamless.

Continuous.

Unstoppable.

His blade cut deeper this time, flames burning through weakened scales. The creature staggered slightly, its balance breaking for just a moment.

That was enough.

Ravin stepped in.

Closer.

Riskier.

His sword ignited brighter than before.

All his mana—

Focused.

Controlled.

Released.

A powerful slash tore through the creature's defenses, flames erupting outward in a controlled explosion.

The impact echoed through the forest.

The creature roared in pain, its body collapsing partially, struggling to remain standing.

Ravin didn't stop.

He couldn't.

Not now.

He pressed forward, delivering a rapid sequence of strikes, each one timed perfectly with his internal healing. His body no longer slowed. His stamina didn't drop the same way.

For the first time—

He dominated the flow of battle.

The creature made one final desperate attack, lunging forward with everything it had left.

Ravin saw it.

Predicted it.

And moved.

A clean sidestep.

A precise turn.

And—

A final strike.

The blade cut through its neck, flames consuming the wound instantly.

Silence fell.

The massive body collapsed to the ground.

Still.

Defeated.

Ravin stood there, breathing heavily—but steady.

Alive.

Unbroken.

Stronger.

"…I did it."

Not luck.

Not survival.

Victory.

He looked at his sword, the faint glow of fire and healing fading slowly.

"…This is my path."

His chest rose slowly as he took a deep breath, the tension finally leaving his body.

For the first time since facing the Pegasus—

He felt it.

Confidence.

Not arrogance.

But certainty.

He had changed.

Truly.

Ravin looked deeper into the forest, his gaze steady, unwavering.

"…I'm getting closer."

The gap still existed.

But now—

He could feel it shrinking.

Step by step.

Battle by battle.

The Flame of Renewal had passed its first trial.

And Ravin—

Was no longer the one who would fall easily.

The hunt continued.

But now—

He was no longer prey.

He was becoming something far more dangerous.
