Chapter 15 - The first conversion

CHAPTER 15

The First Conversion

The morning after the ambush he did three things.

The first thing was the Iron Body session. Day fifteen, sixty-seven percent complete, accelerated x3 by the Day 10 login gift. He held the cultivation posture for forty minutes rather than thirty, because the alley had told him something the numbers alone had not — the difference between knowing you are sixty-seven percent done and knowing what sixty-seven percent meant in practice when a baton was swinging at your forearm. The forty minutes was not anxiety. It was data updating intention.

The second thing was a phone call to Vane, brief and specific: had there been any breach of confidentiality regarding the heir identification? Any communication from the estate's legal records to outside parties? He needed to know when the Harren family had learned his name.

Vane called back in an hour. The answer was: within two hours of the documentation being filed. Not from his office — the breach was in the estate registry's administrative system. Someone inside the registry had flagged the file and forwarded it. Vane was, clearly and professionally, furious about this.

'Who has access to those flags?' Kai asked.

A pause. 'The collateral trust has one registered access credential,' Vane said.

He noted this. He thanked Vane. He ended the call.

The third thing was the conversion.

He walked to the city's financial district — different from Vane's building, he needed a bank, a real one, the kind that dealt in commercial accounts and would not blink, professionally, at an unusual deposit. He had done his research the night before. There was a branch of a mid-size commercial bank on Harrow Street whose head of private banking had, the System's news-monitoring function had helpfully noted, recently been looking for a significant new client relationship after the departure of one of his largest accounts.

Kai walked in wearing the grey jacket and the steel-toed boots and asked to speak with the private banking manager.

The reception staff's expression did the sorting-system thing again. He watched it run its algorithm and arrive at the same uncertain result. He was, he was aware, not dressed for the narrative that a private banking inquiry in this building was supposed to tell.

'I have an account to open,' he said. 'I'd like to speak with your head of private banking. Please tell him it's regarding an initial deposit of fifty million dollars.'

The receptionist looked at him. She looked at his jacket. She looked at his boots.

She picked up the phone.

The private banking manager's name was Horran. He was a trim man of fifty with silver at his temples and the particular quality of professional attention that belongs to people who make their living reading the room and have been doing it long enough to be very, very good at it. He shook Kai's hand with a neutrality that conveyed neither the condescension his expression was suppressing nor the professional alarm that the descriptor fifty million dollars had produced.

'Kai Crestfall,' Kai said.

Horran's professional neutrality recalibrated, visibly, in approximately two seconds.

'Of course,' he said. 'Please come through.'

They sat in a private meeting room. Horran produced forms. Kai opened the System's conversion interface and, for the first time, initiated an actual transaction.

AT RATE: 1 centillion SP = $1,000,000 USD

CASH VALUE: $50,000,000 USD

CONFIRM? [FOCUS]

He confirmed.

There was a moment — a brief, qualitatively distinct pause that felt less like a transaction processing and more like something very old recognizing that it had been asked to do something it had been designed for but had not yet been called upon to do, like a great lock turning for the first time in a generation.

⟦ TRIBULATION WEALTH SYSTEM ⟧

NOTE: The System observes that Host converted

a very conservative amount.

This is correct.

Build the channel before you open the dam.

He gave Horran the account details — the new commercial account number, freshly opened, the paperwork signed, the identification verified against the Crestfall heir documentation that Horran had now clearly looked up and verified and whose presence had shifted the meeting's entire atmospheric pressure.

The transfer cleared in eleven minutes.

Horran confirmed it with the particular quality of composure that well-trained banking professionals maintain in the presence of large numbers and with which Kai was developing a personal appreciation.

'The initial deposit has cleared,' Horran said. 'Will there be further deposits?'

'Regularly,' Kai said. 'The amounts will vary. I'd like to discuss what commercial account structures this bank offers for clients who require —' he thought for a moment about the correct word — 'discretion and capacity. Both simultaneously.'

'Both simultaneously,' Horran said, and his professional neutrality had now reached the specific register of someone who had been in private banking for twenty-five years and had just met the most interesting client of his career and was managing, very successfully, not to show it. 'We have some structures that may be appropriate. Shall I have materials prepared?'

'Please,' Kai said.

He walked out of the bank forty-five minutes later with fifty million dollars in an account, a private banking relationship with a manager who had learned, in the last hour, that the word discretion had a new professional meaning, and the first operational element of what he was beginning, quietly and without announcement, to build.

The Ledger notes: Host converted $50 million

and walked out of the bank at the same pace

he walks out of everything.

The Ledger approves of this.

Some things should not change a person's pace.

A person's pace is a kind of integrity.

He walked back toward the dock. His pace was, as noted, unchanged.

Fifty million dollars. The number sat in his mind with the same weight it always had — not weightless, not dizzyingly heavy, simply there. It was a tool. He had always known how to use tools. The size of the tool did not change the fundamental nature of using it correctly.

He opened the notebook at the dock wall and turned to the page marked STEP ONE.

Below Buy the Dock, he wrote: Capital available.

He looked at the dock. The cranes. The vessels. The water.

He thought: I have been watching this place for seven years. I know every weak point, every inefficiency, every place where something is costing more than it should because nobody with the resources to fix it has ever cared enough to fix it.

He thought: that changes now.
