Chapter 13 - The Alliance Grows

The ride back from the capital was quieter than the trip there—but Lyonel's mind was racing.

He'd spent three days teaching the royal mages his "weave building blocks" method, and already word was spreading faster than Aether Logic could track.

By the time their carriage rolled into the Vance estate, a crowd of villagers, Beastkin, and even a few traveling mages had gathered at the gates.

"The Weave Wizard's back!" a young girl called out, holding up a wooden duck she'd carved herself. "We made these for you!"

Lyonel scrambled out of the carriage, his face lighting up as dozens of carved ducks—big and small, rough and smooth—were held out to him. "Wow," he breathed, taking one carefully in his small hands.

"These are amazing! We should set up a 'Duck Weavers' club—teach everyone how to carve runes into their creations."

Kaelia walked up beside him, her antler-like horns catching the sun.

"You've been gone three days, and your reputation's doubled. Mages from three more villages want to join the Weave Alliance—and the Shadowclaw Pack is sending twenty more warriors to help guard corruption sites."

"Aether Logic: Alliance growth tracking complete," the skill reported. "Current members: 147 people across 8 villages. Projected growth rate: 20% per month if training programs expand."

That afternoon, Lyonel called the full alliance to the training grounds—now expanded with new worktables and rune practice stones he'd designed with help from the royal mages.

He stood on a small platform he'd had built, holding up one of the carved ducks the villagers had given him.

"Everyone—thank you for coming!" he called out, his voice clear despite his size. "While I was in the capital, I learned something important: we're not just fixing problems. We're building something new—a way for everyone to use magic, no matter who they are or where they're from."

He held up a piece of parchment with a new design drawn on it. "This is the 'Alliance Weave'—a network of rune grids that connects every village we work with. When it's done, we'll be able to share magic, warn each other about corruption, and even send messages through the aether itself."

A traveling mage from the northern hills stepped forward. "But how do we connect them all? Even the royal mages can't weave across that much distance."

"We don't weave across it—we build along it," Lyonel grinned. "Think of it like building a road. Each village has its own rune grid—those are the towns. Then we add smaller 'path runes' between them—those are the roads. Before long, we'll have a whole highway system for magic!"

He gestured to a group of young weavers he'd trained earlier. "They've already built the first path rune between our estate and the mining camp. Watch this."

One of the kids tapped a rune stone, and a silver light traveled from their hands, across the ground, and disappeared into the distance. A moment later, a glowing butterfly fluttered back—carrying a small rolled note tied to its leg.

"It works!" the kid cheered. "The mining camp sent word—their crops are growing better than ever!"

As the sun began to set, Lyonel sat with his core team—Seraphina, Kaelia, Mina, Torvin, and Grimjaw—by the training grounds fire. The guardian wolf lay at his feet, occasionally nudging his hand for scratches behind the ears.

"Your father came to find me earlier," Seraphina said, stirring the pot of stew they'd made. "He says the royal court wants to make the Weave Alliance an official kingdom organization. They'd give us funding, land, and even a place in the capital."

"And?" Lyonel asked, already knowing her thoughts.

"And I told him we'd think about it," she smiled. "We built this to be for everyone—not just the kingdom's nobles."

"Smart," Lyonel nodded. "We can take their help, but we keep control. Magic should be for the people who need it most, not just the ones who can afford it."

Mina leaned forward, her purple light glowing softly. "I've been practicing more with my void sense," she said quietly. "I can now track corruption from miles away. I think… I think I could find the source of all this tainted aether if we let me try."

"Aether Logic: Void sense expansion detected," the skill noted. "Mina's ability now capable of regional scanning. Recommend planning an expedition to locate the primary corruption source."

"We'll do it," Lyonel said firmly. "But not yet. First, we need to make sure the Alliance Weave is stable, and that every village has trained weavers to keep things running. Then… we'll find where all this corruption is coming from."

He looked out at the training grounds, where villagers and mages were working together to carve path runes—laughing, talking, and helping each other get better. At 5 years old, he'd already built something most mages spent their whole lives chasing: a community united by magic, not divided by it.

"When I turn ten," he said suddenly, "I want to go see more of the kingdom. Learn what other kinds of magic are out there. Maybe even teach someone who needs it—just like we're teaching everyone here."

Kaelia ruffled his hair. "Then we'll be right there with you, Weave Wizard. Wherever you go, the alliance goes too."
