The silence in the room felt heavier than before.
Anaya stood frozen, her heart pounding as his words echoed in her mind.
"You were never meant to be part of this…"
"What does that even mean?" she whispered, her voice trembling but firm.
The stranger—her husband—looked away, his jaw tightening. For a moment, it seemed like he was fighting something inside himself.
"Some truths," he said slowly, "are safer when buried."
Anaya clenched her fists. "Stop saying things like that! First, you marry me out of nowhere, then you act like I'm in danger, and now this? I deserve answers!"
He turned to her suddenly, his eyes dark and intense.
"And what if the truth destroys everything you think you know?"
The question hit her like a slap.
But she didn't back down.
"I'd rather face the truth than live in lies."
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then finally… he exhaled.
"It started years ago," he said quietly. "A deal… one that was never supposed to involve you."
Anaya's breath caught.
"A deal? With who?"
Before he could answer—
A loud crash echoed from downstairs.
Both of them froze.
Footsteps followed.
Heavy. Slow. Intentional.
Someone was inside the house.
Anaya's heart raced as she instinctively stepped closer to him.
His expression changed instantly—alert, dangerous.
"Stay behind me," he ordered.
The warmth in his voice was gone. In its place… was something cold. Ruthless.
He moved toward the door, every step silent, controlled.
The footsteps downstairs stopped.
Silence.
Then—
A voice.
Low. Familiar.
"And here I thought you'd be harder to find."
Anaya felt a chill run down her spine.
Her husband stiffened.
"You shouldn't have come here," he said coldly.
The man laughed softly.
"Oh, but I had to… after all, you took something that doesn't belong to you."
Anaya's mind raced.
Something? Or… someone?
Her.
The realization hit her like lightning.
Before she could react, the lights flickered—
—and went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
A scream almost escaped her lips, but a strong hand covered her mouth.
"It's me," he whispered close to her ear.
"Don't make a sound."
Her heart hammered against her chest as she clutched his arm.
Downstairs, footsteps started again.
Closer.
Closer.
And then—
Right outside the door.
The handle slowly began to turn.
