Chapter 10: The Enemy Behind the Shadows
The room was finally quiet again.
But this time—
The silence felt heavier than ever.
Meera sat on the edge of her bed, her hands still trembling.
Everything that just happened…
Felt unreal.
But the mark on her wrist—
It proved that it was all real.
"…Something much worse."
Arjun's words echoed in her mind.
She slowly looked up at him.
"What did you mean by that?"
Arjun stood near the broken window, staring into the darkness outside.
His expression was serious.
More serious than before.
"The shadows you saw…" he said quietly,
"They're just the beginning."
Meera's heart tightened.
"Beginning of what?"
Arjun didn't reply immediately.
Instead—
He stepped closer.
"There's someone controlling them."
Meera froze.
"Controlling… them?"
Arjun nodded slowly.
"They don't act on their own," he continued.
"They follow orders."
A chill ran down Meera's spine.
"So… there's someone behind all this?"
Arjun's eyes darkened.
"…Yes."
The room suddenly felt colder again.
"And that 'someone'…" Meera whispered,
"Is after me?"
Arjun didn't deny it.
"…Why me?"
Silence.
Arjun looked at her wrist.
At the mark.
"Because of what you carry."
Meera clenched her fists.
"I still don't understand!"
Arjun exhaled slowly.
"Long ago," he began,
"There was a balance between two forces."
Meera listened carefully.
"Light… and darkness," he said.
Her heartbeat slowed slightly.
"They coexisted," Arjun continued.
"Neither side trying to destroy the other."
"But something changed."
Meera whispered,
"What changed…?"
Arjun's expression turned cold.
"Someone broke that balance."
A heavy silence filled the room.
"They wanted more power," he said.
"Control over everything."
Meera's breath became uneven again.
"And now…"
Arjun looked straight into her eyes.
"They're searching for the one thing they lost."
Meera's heart stopped for a second.
"…Me?"
Arjun didn't answer.
But his silence—
Was enough.
"No…" she whispered, stepping back.
"I'm not part of this… I can't be…"
Arjun moved closer.
"You are," he said firmly.
Tears filled her eyes again.
"This isn't fair…"
"I know," Arjun replied softly.
"But it's the truth."
Meera turned away.
Her mind spinning.
Her heart refusing to accept it.
"So what now?" she asked weakly.
Arjun looked outside again.
"Now…"
He paused.
"They'll stop sending shadows."
Meera froze.
"Then what will they send…?"
Arjun's voice dropped.
"…Someone like me."
A deep silence filled the room.
Meera slowly turned toward him.
"Someone… like you?"
Arjun nodded.
"Someone stronger."
Her heart started racing again.
"And when they come…"
Arjun continued,
"It won't just be a fight."
"It will be a hunt."
A sudden gust of wind blew through the broken window.
The curtains flew wildly.
Meera hugged herself tightly.
Fear wrapped around her completely.
But beneath that fear—
Something else started growing.
Determination.
"I won't run anymore," she said suddenly.
Arjun looked at her.
Surprised.
"I'm scared," she admitted.
"But I don't want to keep being weak."
Her eyes were trembling—
But her voice was steady.
"Teach me," she said.
Silence.
Arjun stared at her.
For the first time—
He saw something different.
Not just fear.
Courage.
"…This path is dangerous," he said quietly.
"I know."
"You might not be able to go back to your normal life."
"I already can't."
A pause.
Then slowly—
Arjun nodded.
"…Alright."
That one word—
Marked the beginning of everything.
Because from that moment—
Meera was no longer just a target.
She was becoming something else.
Something stronger.
Something dangerous.
Outside—
Far away—
In the deepest darkness—
A pair of glowing eyes opened.
"…So it begins," a voice whispered.
And this time—
The real enemy…
Was finally watching.
