Chapter 100: FIRST LOVE

"Get down," I say again, already moving.
Liam drops from the sofa to the floor in a single fluid motion that tells me his body remembered the training before his mind finished processing the instruction, and I am already below the window line, pulling him further into the shadow of the wall, away from the angle the laser was tracking from the street below.
We stay there for a long moment, pressed against the wall beneath the window, neither of us speaking, the sounds of the street below completely ordinary, no shot, no impact, nothing to indicate that whoever was holding that laser had decided to use it yet rather than simply announce their presence.
"How many," Liam says quietly, his voice entirely level.
"One that I saw," I say. "Doorway opposite. Ground level. Long enough to be deliberate."
"They know we're here."
"They followed us here," I say. "They were already outside when Aria and I arrived."
