The forest no longer felt like an enemy.
But it wasn't fully an ally either.
It watched.
It listened.
And it judged.
Kai walked carefully along a narrow path formed naturally between thick roots and towering trees. Lira moved ahead of him, light on her feet, as if the forest itself guided her steps. Umbra followed behind, silent as ever, his presence like a shadow that refused to leave.
For a while… no one spoke.
Only the sounds of nature filled the air—distant birds, rustling leaves, and the slow creak of ancient wood bending with the wind.
But Kai's mind wasn't quiet.
It kept going back to one thing.
"Lira…"
His voice broke the silence.
She slowed slightly but didn't turn.
"Yes?"
Kai hesitated, then said it:
"…What happened to that village?"
This time, she stopped.
Completely.
Even the wind seemed to fade with her stillness.
Umbra's footsteps slowed behind them.
Kai stepped closer.
"I saw it," he continued. "Burnt homes… broken ground… no one there."
His voice tightened slightly.
"…What happened to them?"
Lira didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked up at the towering trees above them.
"…They didn't listen," she finally said.
Kai frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Lira turned slowly, her expression no longer sharp—but heavy.
"That village stood at the edge of this forest," she said. "Close enough to benefit from its life… but too close to ignore its dangers."
Kai listened carefully.
"I warned them," she continued. "Many times."
"About the Abyss."
"At first, it was small," Lira said as she began walking again. Kai followed closely.
"Animals started disappearing. Then we heard sounds at night… things moving where nothing should be."
Kai nodded slowly.
"Like what we saw before."
Lira continued:
"I told the villagers the forest was changing. That something dark was growing deep within it."
She paused.
"But they didn't believe me."
Kai sighed quietly.
"People don't believe things they can't see."
Lira's voice lowered.
"Then one night… they came."
Kai felt his grip tighten on his sword.
"How many?"
Lira shook her head.
"…Too many."
Her eyes darkened as the memory returned.
"The sky turned black."
"The ground cracked."
"And from the forest… they poured out."
"Not just Shadow Crawlers…"
"Stronger creatures."
"Faster."
"Worse."
"I fought them," she said firmly.
"The forest answered me."
"Trees moved."
"Vines crushed them."
"The wind carried my strikes."
Kai looked at her with respect.
"You fought all of that… alone?"
Lira nodded.
"I protected as many as I could."
"But…"
She stopped walking again.
"…it wasn't enough."
"The villagers panicked," she continued.
"They ran."
"Some tried to fight."
"Others hid."
Her voice softened.
"…Most didn't survive."
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
Kai looked down.
"…I'm sorry."
Lira didn't respond right away.
Then quietly:
"I was too late.
Kai stepped in front of her.
"No."
She looked up.
"You weren't too late," he said firmly.
"If you hadn't been there… no one would have survived."
Lira blinked slightly.
"You fought."
"You protected people."
"That matters."
She stared at him for a moment.
"…You really believe that?"
Kai nodded.
"I do."
From behind them, Umbra spoke.
"Belief doesn't change outcomes."
Both turned.
His eyes were calm.
"If you are not strong enough… people die."
Kai frowned.
"That's not the point."
Umbra stepped forward slightly.
"It is the only point."
Kai shook his head.
"No."
"The point is we get stronger so it doesn't happen again."
Umbra said nothing.
But his gaze lingered on Kai longer than before.
They resumed walking.
But the silence now was different.
Not empty.
Not tense.
Something was forming.
Kai glanced at Lira.
Then spoke again.
"…Come with us."
Lira stopped.
Kai continued:
"We're looking for the other blades."
"If what you said is true… then more attacks will come."
"We can't stop it alone."
Lira looked at him carefully.
"And you think I should join you?"
Kai nodded.
"Yes."
Umbra stepped forward.
"You already fight to protect this forest," he said.
"But the threat is no longer just here."
He looked directly at her.
"It's spreading."
Lira's expression hardened slightly.
"…And you want me to leave it unguarded?"
Kai shook his head quickly.
"No."
"We're not asking you to abandon it."
"We're asking you to protect more than just this place."
Lira turned away, looking deep into the forest.
For a long moment… she said nothing.
Then she closed her eyes.
The wind shifted.
Leaves moved gently around her.
As if the forest itself was responding.
Listening.
Then slowly…
She opened her eyes.
"…Alright."
Kai's face lit up slightly.
"Really?"
She nodded.
"I'll come with you."
Then her expression sharpened.
"But I don't trust him."
She glanced at Umbra.
Kai hesitated.
"…That's fair."
Now three.
They moved deeper into the forest—but not along any clear path.
This time, Lira led them through hidden routes.
Across fallen trees.
Through narrow openings between roots.
At one point, they climbed along thick vines stretched across a deep ravine, the ground far below barely visible through the mist.
Kai looked down briefly.
"…One wrong step and we're gone."
Lira smirked slightly.
"Then don't step wrong."
Hours later, they reached a wide river.
The current was strong.
Fast.
Dangerous.
"There's no bridge," Kai said.
"There doesn't need to be," Lira replied.
She raised her hand.
Vines extended across the river, weaving together into a narrow path.
Kai stepped onto it carefully.
It swayed slightly.
"…You trust this?"
Lira walked across without hesitation.
"You should trust me instead."
Kai followed.
Halfway through—
The vines shook violently.
Something moved beneath the water.
"Something's there!" Kai shouted.
A creature burst out of the river—
A water-based Abyssal.
It lunged toward them.
Kai reacted instantly.
Zooka Dash.
WHOOSH.
He leaped forward, avoiding the attack.
Lira raised her hand—
"Bind!"
Vines shot downward into the water, wrapping around the creature.
It struggled violently.
Kai turned mid-air.
"Ignivar!"
Flames burst along his blade.
SLASH.
The creature fell back into the river.
The water calmed.
Kai landed on the other side, breathing hard.
"That was close."
Lira crossed moments later.
"…You reacted faster this time."
Kai smiled slightly.
"Training's working."
Umbra stepped onto land last.
"…Still not fast enough."
Kai sighed.
"Of course you'd say that."
As they continued…
Something changed.
Not outside.
But between them.
Kai and Lira began to move more naturally together.
Without thinking.
Without hesitation.
Their timing improved.
Their awareness sharpened.
And even Umbra noticed.
"…They're syncing faster than expected," he thought.
As night fell, they stopped near a massive tree.
The stars were barely visible through the leaves.
Kai sat down, placing his sword beside him.
Lira leaned against a root.
Umbra stood nearby, watching the darkness.
Far away…
Something moved.
Watching them.
Waiting.
Three paths have become one…
But the deeper they go, the more harder it becomes.
