Chapter 25 - CHAPTER 25: WHAT MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

Then I woke up the next morning as early as 5am. I wasn't settled then I started reading the second letter properly because of course I need to know things I don't know and it seems my mum knew a lot before she died.

Well the city outside is still quiet into that particular hush it only reached in the smallest hours not silent, never silent, but quieter. Like even the noise needed to breathe.

I had the letter open on my lap. The box beside me on the bed. The lamp on the nightstand casting a warm, narrow circle of light that made the rest of the room feel very far away.

I read slowly and carefully. The way you eat something you know you'll never taste again.

My mother's handwriting was in careful detail. I used to tease her about it when I was small. Mum, you write like you're being graded. She'd smiled and said, Everything worth saying is worth saying properly, Sera.

I hadn't thought about that in years.

I thought about it now.
