The giant, ethereal blue interface dominated Jin-Woo's vision, blocking out the decaying walls of the apartment.
[External Authority Request][Entity: ???][Purpose: Link Expansion][Accept / Reject]
Time seemed to freeze. Jin-Woo stared at the blinking cursor, his heart slamming against his ribs. It was a trap. A digital guillotine.
If I reject it... will it sever the link entirely? Jin-Woo thought, cold sweat dripping down his neck. Or will it just piss him off and make him force his way in? For the first time since the system awoke, a decision felt entirely unknowable.
Suddenly, the physical world reacted to the immense digital pressure.
The remaining glass in the apartment's windows didn't just crack; it exploded outward into the night. The entire concrete structure of the building groaned, vibrating violently as if hit by a localized earthquake. The single remaining lightbulb in the hallway popped, plunging them into deeper darkness.
And then, the screams started.
Not from inside the room. From the street below.
Tae-Soo stumbled to the shattered window, looking down into the dark alley and the wider street beyond. His breath caught in his throat. "Jin-Woo... this isn't local. The signal is spreading."
Down on the street, people were freezing mid-step. A salaryman dropped his briefcase, clutching his head. A teenager on a bicycle crashed into a parked car, completely rigid. From this height, Tae-Soo could see the faint, sickly crimson glow beginning to pulse in their wide, unblinking eyes.
[Unlinked Humans: Receiving Signal][Conversion Probability Rising]
The Predator wasn't just hunting Jin-Woo. He was using Hae-In's tether as an antenna to broadcast his corruption across the entire city block.
On the floor, Hae-In suddenly broke through her trance. Her body arched, her eyes snapping back to a terrifying clarity.
"Don't accept it!" she screamed, her voice tearing with absolute, raw terror. She wasn't an emotionless survivor anymore; she was a girl staring at the devil. "If you accept... you won't be you anymore! He'll wear your skin!"
Pain erupted in Jin-Woo's right arm.
Thick, black, and crimson veins began to violently crawl up from his wrist, spreading toward his shoulder like a living spiderweb. His vision violently glitched, red static bleeding over his blue system UI.
[Authority Conflict Escalating][Manual Input Required]
His finger hovered in his mind, paralyzed by the weight of the choice. The red static was creeping toward his throat. He was losing control.
"Snap out of it!"
Seo-Ah lunged forward, grabbing Jin-Woo by the collar of his torn jacket and violently shaking him. "Don't let it choose for you! Fight it, Jin-Woo!"
For a split second, the chaotic noise of the crumbling building and the screaming city faded. Everything felt completely quiet. There was just the desperate, grounding warmth of Seo-Ah's hands gripping him. It was a single, fragile anchor of humanity in a sea of digital static.
Jin-Woo gritted his teeth, his eyes flashing a defiant blue.
Reject.
He mentally slammed the command.
The blue interface blinked. The suffocating pressure in the room vanished.
The system... listened.
For one agonizingly long second, Jin-Woo exhaled. He had won. He had shut the door.
And then, the blue text shattered like glass.
The interface violently reassembled itself in jagged, blood-red code.
[Request Denied][Override Initiated]
Everyone in the room froze. The air turned to ice.
Override. The system's rules didn't apply to him. The Predator was an admin in a world of users.
Hae-In unleashed a bloodcurdling shriek as her body was entirely overtaken again. At the exact same moment, Jin-Woo's vision violently split down the middle.
His left eye saw the crumbling, shaking apartment.
His right eye saw the crimson wasteland. The mountains of mangled, glitching corpses. And the silhouette.
It was much closer now. It was standing only feet away in the red expanse. The silhouette leaned in. When it spoke, the voice didn't come from the air. It echoed directly inside Jin-Woo's skull—a sound like grinding metal and digital static.
"Authority conflict acknowledged. Correcting."
The physical backlash of the dual-reality tore through the apartment.
The ceiling cracked, dropping heavy chunks of plaster. The floorboards buckled.
"We have to move NOW! The building is going to collapse!" Tae-Soo yelled. Min-Jae hung limp over his shoulder, completely unresponsive as debris rained down around them.
Seo-Ah pulled desperately at Jin-Woo's arm. "Jin-Woo, get up! Walk!"
But Hae-In was moving in the opposite direction. Driven by pure survival instinct, the girl scrambled backward, dragging her bleeding body toward the fire escape. She didn't look back. She wasn't running from the collapsing building or the monsters in the street.
She was running from what Jin-Woo was becoming.
Jin-Woo dropped to his knees, his mind fracturing under the weight of the Predator's intrusion. The red veins were reaching his neck. The silhouette in his right eye was raising a hand, reaching for his core.
If the Predator got in, it wouldn't just take Jin-Woo. It would travel down his tethers. It would consume Seo-Ah. It would consume Tae-Soo. It would burn Min-Jae's mind to ash.
Jin-Woo looked at Seo-Ah, whose hands were desperately trying to pull him up.
If I can't close the gate... Jin-Woo thought, his blue eyes bleeding into a deep, hollow void. I'll become the lock.
Jin-Woo slammed his hand against his own chest.
[Emergency Protocol Triggered][Severing Local Links]
"Jin-Woo, what are you doing?!" Seo-Ah gasped.
The ethereal blue tether snapped.
Seo-Ah collapsed to her knees, gasping as if all the air had been violently punched out of her lungs. It felt like something had been physically ripped out of her chest. The comforting, protective warmth of his Authority instantly vanished from her body, leaving her hollow and freezing in the dark.
Jin-Woo roared, pulling all his system's energy inward, collapsing his entire network into a single, highly dense singularity around his own mind. He built a firewall out of his own soul, trapping the Predator's signal inside with him, and shutting out the rest of the world.
The red reality in his right eye flickered, trapped.

The violent shaking of the apartment stopped. The overwhelming pressure evaporated.
Jin-Woo was breathing heavily, his head bowed, the black veins throbbing faintly on his neck. He was alive, but the faint blue glow that used to surround him was completely gone.
Jin-Woo looked up at the shattered window, into the screaming city. He was entirely alone in his own system now.
I cut everyone else off... Jin-Woo thought, feeling the terrifying, silent presence of the Predator locked inside his own head.
Now... it was just the two of us.
