Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14: THE PRICE OF POWER

Kael's body suddenly turned back to the stairway entrance as two new figures slowly came into view. One was a female zombie and the other a male. Yet their appearance was different from every other undead Kael had seen so far.

Most especially, two system messages shone in bright orange colors above their heads.

[LEVEL 15 ZOMBIE (RARE)]

[LEVEL 17 ELITE ZOMBIE (RARE)]

Yet it seemed the instinct currently harboring his body didn't care, as before Kael could even register the two undeads' appearance, his body lunged forward in a blur. His foot lightly tapped the ground, yet each step propelled him with a speed that could barely be tracked by the human eye.

This time, Kael could feel several units of ENERGI being used to enhance his body rather than the split ones. Also, he felt stronger overall, something he quietly attributed to his leveling up twice.

The female zombie roared in anger, a light of intelligence flashing within her eyes that unsettled Kael.

'Aren't they supposed to have no intellect?'

Their ability to use their class skills should be instinctual, something probably innate to them. It made them more dangerous than usual zombies, yet, there was no finesse or thought to their actions, making them predictable once someone knows what to watch out for.

A deep red orb suddenly formed in front of the zombie's outstretched mouth before a deadly beam of fire flew out towards his swiftly approaching figure. His body merely ducked, evading the beam that passed a few inches above his shoulder; the heat from the attack not fazing him at all.

The zombie moved her head in his direction, moving the deadly beam along with it, yet he merely moved around it, his movements flowing with fluidity.

Seeing he was near, the male zombie's arms suddenly morphed into a saber form made from ghastly white bones.

Kael could swear his body released a harrumph.

A massive burst of ENERGI was pumped into his body. The zombie's eyes widened when he saw Kael materialize before them like a ghost. Uncaring for its response, Kael's palm slammed toward the female zombie's mouth, shutting it forcefully and causing the red orb to sputter out harmlessly.

A blade cleaved down on him, yet he merely retreated a step, watching the attack fall uselessly before him. His fingers suddenly blurred as they bored into the male zombie's brain through its eye as the undead roared and flinched in pain. It tried to hack him with its other saber-like limb, but Kael watched as his body merely used his other palm to confront the attack. With a masterful use of the flame burst from **Ignition Fist**, the blade was parried aside almost easily.

**Ignition Fist** activated on his fingers—still boring into the monster's skull—and the undead's head burst violently like a squashed melon, blood and white matter flying everywhere.

Another beam of flames suddenly flew at him, yet he merely fell low as he spun with his right leg outstretched, sweeping the female zombie off her feet. The zombie fell helplessly to the ground at the same time that a leg rose into the air, before a foot smashed down on her head, **Ignition Fist** activating once more.

- BOOM!

- SQUELCH!

He raised his blood-smeared leg from the crater before him, before flicking his foot aside, sending most of the gore flying away.

More roars resounded from the lower floors as it seemed more undead were fast approaching, probably lured by the loud noise. That was until several loud roars, their voices filled with power and unusual authority, suddenly erupted from within the school campus from various directions.

The sound of quickly shuffling feet suddenly went still before coming back again, but this time not towards Kael but away from the dorm, almost as if they had been summoned.

His body lingered for a moment before he dusted himself off, turned, and walked back without a care towards the two sisters who stood stiffly like ice statues on the other side of the corridor. Kael's hair waved slightly with the wind as the muscles beneath his skin rippled, a side benefit of his stat enhancement.

As if thinking of something, he suddenly flashed a grin just a short distance from the girls. Then, without any hesitation, he grabbed his left arm and yanked with all his might, the sound of flesh tearing soon filling the quiet corridor.

'Bloody hell...' Kael's soul, still within that dark space, muttered with a stunned look, an action that mirrored that of the girls outside.

"BASTARD!" he roared in anger and frustration at the same time his body suddenly fell forward while his eyes sealed shut.

Then system messages flashed before him.

[PRIMORDIAL OVERRIDE HAS ENDED!]

[YOU ARE IN A WEAKENED STATE!]

[FOR SIX HOURS, YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO MOVE AS YOUR BODY HEALS AND YOUR ENERGI REGENERATES SLOWLY]

*****

An hour after the clash between Kael's **Primordial Override** and the small zombie horde.

Room 3-M.

Silence engulfed the room as Kael lay stiffly on a bunk bed, his thoughts a mess. On another bed were Alice and Natalie, the latter having drifted off to sleep while the former sat at her side, her eyes trained on Kael's still figure.

She had bandaged his still-bleeding, torn arm with a first-aid box they found on the floor. But there was nothing they could do to stop the bleeding completely. After all, Kael's ENERGI had been completely used, and he wouldn't be able to regenerate it for six entire hours.

A really harsh penalty for his class's lethal perk.

In this state, even a Level 1 Common Zombie would be a danger to him. Also, Kael couldn't even move his body an inch and could only lie there helplessly.

Not that he could complain after the stunt he just pulled. Even now, the situation felt surreal to Alice. She had seen what happened from the beginning, and it was only with her sharp senses that she and her sister had survived the burst of golden flames that had filled the corridor. She had quickly moved them to their room, shut the door, and retreated safely to the back before the flames could reach them.

After she was sure there was no more immediate danger, she had left the room once again—but this time alone, against her sister's insistence.

'It doesn't make sense!'

'How could he be so strong already? Just what is his level?'

No matter how she tried to wrap her head around it, she couldn't make sense of the situation. Was the gap that wide between them already? She was only Level 4, but she had an **Epic** class. She had thought her class was unique and formidable, but she wasn't so sure any longer.

She was grateful to Kael for saving them, despite having placed them in danger himself.

'But why do I feel this loss?' The light in her eyes dimmed as she grasped her chest.

As for Kael, he was also in a world of his own.

'BLOODY HELL!

'BLOODY! BLOODY! BLOODY HELL!'

'FUCK YOU SYSTEM! FUCK YOU SHITTY PRIMORDIAL OVERRIDE!'

Kael cursed and cursed, despite his calm outward appearance, for what felt like an hour. Only when the grievances in his heart were slightly lessened did he shift his attention somewhere else.

His focus fell on the logs of system messages he had ignored.
