Chapter 8 - The ones who watch

The forest was too quiet. Again. No wind. No movement. No sound. Like everything that had just happened...had been erased. But Elara knew better. She could still feel it. That presence. That voice. Then don't. Her chest tightened. What was that...she whispered. Noah helped her stand slowly. You collapsed, he said. You should sit, I'm fine. The words came out sharper than she meant. Kael let out a quiet breath. You are not. Elara turned to him. Anger flickering beneath her exhaustion. Then tell me what am I. Silence. Kael looked away first. Wrong move. Don't do that, she snapped. Don't act like you know everything and then say nothing. Noah crossed his arms slightly. She is right. Kael's jaw tightened. For a second, it looked like he might actually walk away. They don't like it when I talk,he said finally. Elara frowned. Who? Kael looked up. Not at her. At the sky. And for the first time, Elara followed his gaze. The sky over Noctvale wasn't normal. It never had been. Too dark. Too still. But now she saw it. Something was wrong. A shift. A distortion. Like something invisible was there. Watching. Her breath caught. We are not alone. Are we? Kael's voice dropped. We never were. A chill ran down her spine. Noah shook his head. Okay, enough with the cryptic answers. Start explaining. Kael laughed quietly. But there was no humor in it. You really don't see it? See what? Kael stepped closer. His eyes locked on Noah. They don't care about you. Silence. They never did. Elara's heart skipped. What does that mean? Kael didn't look at her. It means, he said slowly, this town, this place, his gaze lifted again. It exists for her. Everything went still. Elara felt it. Deep in her bones. That pull. That truth. No, Noah said. That's not possible. Kael finally looked at her again. And this time, there was no anger. No coldness. Just something like fear. You think all of this is random? He said quietly. The visions. The loops. The people who don't leave?Elara's pulse quickened. They built this place, Kael continued. To watch what you choose. Her breath caught. Why? A pause. Then the answer. Because every time you choose, his voice lowered. Someone dies. Silence. Heavy. Crushing. No, Elara whispered. Flash. The creature. Its voice. You left me. Her hands started shaking. That's not true. It is. Noah stepped forward. That's enough. Kael didn't stop. You think that thing was the first? He said. It wasn't. Elara's chest tightened painfully. How many, she whispered. Kael didn't answer. And that silence said everything. No, she said stepping back. No, that's not. I wouldn't, Noah caught her arm. Hey,look at me. She did. You don't know that, he said firmly. You don't remember anything. He's just messing with you. Kael laughed. Yeah,he said quietly. I wish that were true. Elara pulled her arm free. Stop. Both of them froze. Her breathing was uneven now. Eyes bright. On the edge. I'm done with this, she said. No more half truths. No more riddles. She looked at Kael. If I did something, if I hurt people, her voice broke slightly.

Then tell me everything. Silence. Kael stared at her. Long. Heavy. Then you chose him. The words hit harder than anything else. Elara froze. What? Kael's eyes darkened. Not once. A step closer. Not twice. Her heart started pounding. Every time. Noah went still. Kael, he said warningly. But Kael didn't stop. You always choose him. Elara's world tilted. And every time you do, his voice dropped to a whisper. I'm the one who pays for it.

Elara's breath caught. Because this time, she didn't just feeling it. She felt something worse. Something deeper. Something dangerously close to truth. And for the first time she wasn't sure. She would choose differently.
