Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: The Shadow Cabinet

The news of the "Summer Vacation" trip hit the classroom like a tidal wave of artificial joy. To the average student in Class D, the announcement of a week-long cruise was a reprieve from the suffocating pressure of the recent exams. They saw sun, sand, and luxury. I saw a cage with better scenery.

I sat in the back row, watching the chaos unfold. At the front of the room, Yousuke Hirata was already organizing the groups with his usual, nauseatingly perfect diplomacy. He was the glue holding the class together, but glue was brittle under heat. Beside him, Kikyou Kushida was beaming, her "Trust Level" with the class hovering at a staggering 95%.

[TARGET: KIKYOU KUSHIDA]

[SOCIAL VULNERABILITY: 22%]

[CURRENT STATE: DISGUISE ACTIVE]

[WARNING: DISCREPANCY DETECTED BETWEEN OUTWARD PROJECTION AND INTERNAL PULSE]

Kushida was a landmine. The System flagged her every time she smiled, her numbers twitching in a way that suggested a violent storm beneath the surface. If I was going to survive the island, I couldn't rely on the "good" leaders. I needed the people who lived in the margins—the ones who saw the world for the transactional meat-grinder it actually was.

I caught Horikita's eye across the room. She gave a nearly imperceptible nod. She had heard the rumors I'd leaked to her earlier that morning. She knew the cruise was a front.

"We need to talk," I whispered as I passed her desk on the way to the cafeteria.

"The rooftop. Ten minutes," she replied, not looking up from her book.

The rooftop was whipped by a sharp wind that carried the salt of the nearby ocean. Horikita was already there, leaning against the railing. She looked smaller out here, stripped of the protection of her desk and her books.

"The island," she started, her voice cutting through the wind. "You were right. My brother confirmed the logistics during a council meeting I... overheard. It's a survival test. We start with base points, and we spend them to buy necessities. Everything has a price."

"Including leadership," I added. "Hirata will try to save everyone. He'll want to buy tents, toilets, and high-quality food to keep morale up. If he does that, Class D will be bankrupt before the third day."

Horikita turned to face me. "Then we take control. I'll speak to the class."

"No," I said, stepping closer. "If you speak, they'll recoil. You're the 'ice queen' of Class D, Suzune. They respect your grades, but they hate your attitude. If you want to win, you need to stay in the shadows. We need a proxy."

[NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: PUPPETEER'S LOGIC (LEVEL 1)]

[INFLUENCE GAINED: 10 POINTS]

"A proxy?" She narrowed her eyes. "Who?"

"Ken Sudo," I said.

Horikita actually recoiled. "The hothead? He's a liability. He can barely pass a quiz without a tantrum."

"Exactly. He's loud, he's physically dominant, and he's fiercely loyal to the few people who don't treat him like a thug. More importantly, the class expects him to be a problem. If Sudo suddenly starts making 'smart' suggestions that happen to save everyone's skin, they won't suspect a mastermind. They'll just think he's finally growing up."

I leaned against the railing beside her. "I'll handle Sudo. You handle the logistics. We need to identify the 'leaders' of the other classes before we hit the beach. Ryuen from Class C is already moving. I saw him meeting with Class B's Ichinose this morning."

[QUEST PROGRESS: SECURE A PERMANENT ALLY — 75% COMPLETE]

"Why are you doing this, Ren?" Horikita asked, her gaze searching my face. "You talk about transactions, but you're taking an enormous risk. If the school catches you manipulating the class hierarchy, you're the first one they'll expel."

"I told you," I said, looking out at the horizon. "I'm tired of being a ghost. In this school, you're either the one holding the leash or the one wearing it. I've decided I don't like the fit of the collar."

I left her there and headed to the gym. Sudo was practicing his jump shots, the hollow thwack of the basketball echoing in the empty hall. He was frustrated, his movements jagged and aggressive.

[TARGET: KEN SUDO]

[SOCIAL VULNERABILITY: 68% (INSECURITY)]

[TRUST LEVEL: 10% (NEUTRAL)]

I waited until he missed a shot and the ball rolled toward me. I picked it up, feeling the pebbled texture under my palm.

"You're rushing the release," I said, tossing the ball back to him. "You're worried about the island, aren't you? Worried you'll blow your top and get kicked out, leaving the team behind."

Sudo caught the ball and glared at me. "What do you know about it, Class D trash?"

"I know that Ryuen is planning to provoke you on the first day," I lied. The System hadn't confirmed a specific plan, but it was a 99% probability based on Ryuen's "Aggression Pattern." "He wants you to swing first. One punch, Sudo. That's all it takes for the school to tear up your scholarship."

Sudo's face went pale, then a deep, bruised red. "That bastard."

"I can help you stop him," I said, walking toward the center of the court. "But you have to do exactly what I say. No questions. No outbursts. You become the hero of Class D, and I stay the guy who nobody remembers. Do we have a deal?"

Sudo bounced the ball once, twice. He looked at the hoop, then back at me. The System pulsed a vibrant green.

[TRUST LEVEL (SUDO): 45% (RELIANCE)]

[INFLUENCE GAINED: 5 POINTS]

[SYSTEM ALERT: THRESHOLD REACHED]

[INFLUENCE BALANCE: 50 POINTS]

[MARKETPLACE UNLOCKED]

As Sudo nodded his consent, a new window bloomed in my vision. It was a dark, obsidian interface filled with icons I didn't recognize.

Pulse Manipulation. Forged Credentials. Social Blindspot.

The price for the "Social Blindspot" was exactly 50 points. I didn't hesitate. I bought it.

The world didn't change, but I felt a sudden, strange lightness. It was as if a layer of grease had been wiped off my soul. I looked toward the gym entrance and saw Ayanokouji standing there, his hands in his pockets.

For the first time, he didn't look through me. He looked at me. He tilted his head slightly, a gesture so small it was almost invisible, but to me, it felt like a spotlight.

The "Social Blindspot" was supposed to make me invisible to everyone's intuition. But Ayanokouji just blinked, turned around, and walked away.

The System was silent. I stood on the court, the shadow of the hoop stretching out like a gallows. I had my ally. I had my tool. And tomorrow, we would go to war on a beach.
