The door shut behind Lyra with a quiet sound that echoed through my chest more than my ears.
I remained motionless far longer than necessary. My gaze fixed on that closed barrier as if sheer willpower could make it swing open again. As if I could undo her choice and pull her back where I could shield her properly instead of relying on formal procedures and impartial guards to ensure her safety.
My fists clenched and released at my sides.
This was her decision. I had to honor it. But honoring something did not mean I had to embrace it. The primitive part of my nature that roared against any separation was anything but calm or accepting. It was deafening and relentless. Every fiber of my being demanded I chase after her. Verify her safe arrival. Ensure no harm came to her.
I willed myself to pivot away.
