Kaelen's POV
"If you think this gesture means we might restart something between us," I stated flatly, "then you're mistaken. That chapter is closed."
Genevieve's face remained impassive. "I never suggested otherwise."
"You understand what I'm getting at."
"Do I?" She cocked her head to one side. "You've known me for years, Kaelen. Have you ever seen me do anything while expecting compensation or recognition? We're discussing your mother's life here."
I shifted my focus away from her. The artwork lining the hallway seemed to lose definition around the periphery of my sight. "I needed to establish that boundary clearly. It doesn't add up why you'd take such a risk unless you still harbored feelings."
"My feelings for you haven't disappeared." Her tone remained measured. Unwavering. "I care deeply about what happens to you."
The admission settled in the space between us. I sensed her gaze studying my features, anticipating my response.
