Genevieve's POV
The sound of Kaelen choking made my blood freeze.
My first instinct was that something was wrong with Rowena's food, which seemed absurd since the woman could transform stale bread into a feast worthy of kings. But his fork crashed against his plate and Jaxson was already in motion, his palm striking Kaelen's back with brutal force that should have cleared any obstruction.
Only this wasn't about what he'd swallowed.
Kaelen's fingers clawed desperately at his chest as though something was tearing him apart from within. His eyes went blank and wild. The blood fled his face so rapidly I was certain he would collapse right there beside his untouched meal.
"Kaelen?" Rowena's sharp voice sliced through our stunned silence.
