Benedict's POV
I balanced the silver tray in one hand while pressing my phone against my ear with the other, ascending the stairs with measured steps.
"Talk to me," I commanded into the device.
A hesitation followed on the other end. Brief, but long enough to make my muscles tense with anticipation.
"We have a situation," Jaxson's voice came through, carrying that controlled tone he reserved for delivering unwelcome news.
I reached the landing and moved down the corridor. The overhead lights hummed their monotonous tune while my feet made no sound on the plush carpet below.
"Elaborate." I maintained my composure, keeping my voice steady. There was little benefit in reacting before understanding the full scope of whatever had occurred.
"There was a car accident," Jaxson explained, his words careful and measured. "Kaelen's woman was in it."
I made a soft clicking sound with my tongue. Three precise clicks that bounced off the hallway walls.
