I held my breath until Kaelen's heavy footsteps disappeared completely down the hallway.
Only then did I allow the air to escape my lungs in a slow, measured exhale. The curse that followed came out as barely a whisper.
Genevieve had just signed my death warrant.
She had painted a perfect target on my back, handed Kaelen the exact ammunition he needed to destroy me the same way Benedict once tried. Every dirty secret, every weakness, every vulnerability laid bare for him to exploit.
And Kaelen had absorbed every word.
I saw it burning in those calculating eyes of his. The way he studied me when he mentioned those files, when he spoke about keeping them locked away until I crossed whatever invisible line he had drawn. He meant every syllable.
