Chapter 10 - When It Starts to Hurt(Please Follow)

Time resumed like nothing had happened,so fast that it felt unreal.

Sound rushed back. Movement returned. The world slipped into place as if it had never broken.Students walked past.. A phone rang somewhere in the distance.someone laughing too loudly like nothing had just happened. The world didn't even hesitate. It just… continued.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal...

Aera stood where she was, her breath uneven, her head still spinning from what she had just experienced. For a second, she couldn't tell if she was still standing or not.Her head hurt. Not sharp. Just.. this dull, heavy pressure sitting behind her eyes like something was trying to push through.

"You need to sit."The gentle one's voice came quickly this time.

"I'm fine," Aera said almost out of habit.

But her legs didn't agree. She took a step back and leaned slightly against a nearby bench, pressing her fingers to her temple. A dull ache had settled there, growing slowly but steadily.

This hadn't happened before. Not like this.

"You're not fine," the intense one said. His tone was sharper than usual.

"Stop saying that," Aera replied, her voice lower now. "All of you keep saying things like you know what's happening."

"Because we do," the silent one said.

"Then explain it."

Silence....That answer was enough.

Aera let out a quiet breath, frustration mixing with something else now...fear, maybe."What did you mean?" she asked, looking at the leader. "About me being connected."

His expression didn't change. But something behind it did."You need to stay away from us," he said. The words landed harder than she expected.Aera frowned. "That's not happening."

"It's not a suggestion."

"Then what is it?" she asked. "A threat?"

A brief pause.

"No! A Warning!."That should have made her step back.It didn't.

"Why?" she asked.

"Because you're already too connected," he replied. The answer didn't make sense. But it felt real. Before she could respond, something caught her attention.Across the path."The girl".The same one from before. She stood near the edge of the walkway, holding her bag loosely at her side.At first glance, nothing seemed wrong. But then Aera noticed it.The way she stood.Too still...Too quiet..Like she had paused but forgotten how to move again.

Aera's chest tightened slightly."She's not okay," she said.No one responded.Aera took a step forward.

"Aera..."

She ignored them. The girl turned her head slowly..Her eyes met Aera's.There was nothing in them.

No confusion.No emotion.Not reaction.

Just… empty.Aera stopped."Hey," she said carefully. "Are you okay?"The girl blinked once. Then smiled. But it wasn't right. It came too lateThe smile came late. Like it had to catch up. Like it didn't belong to her face.."I'm fine," she said. The same words. The same tone. The same… nothing.

Aera felt something drop in her chest. She had heard that before. She had said that before. But this..this was different."She's not fine," Aera said again, turning back to them. "Something's wrong with her.""We know," the silent one replied.

"Then fix it."

"We can't."

Aera stared at them. "What do you mean, 'we can't'? You're just going to stand there?""It's not stable," one of them said quietly.

"That's not an excuse."

"It's not an excuse," the silent one replied. "It's the reality."

Aera looked back at the girl.Still standing there.Still smiling like nothing was wrong..And suddenly..Aera felt it again. That pressure. Not outside. But Inside.

Her breath caught. The world around her shifted slightly..not enough to stop, but enough to feel off."No…" she whispered. The girl's hand twitched.Then..she froze.

Completely.!

Aera's eyes widened."I didn't do that," she said quickly. But her voice didn't sound convincing. Not even to herself.Sheknew.This wasn't random anymore."You're affecting it," the intense one said, stepping closer.

"I'm not.."

"You are."His voice was firm now."This is what we were trying to avoid."Aera shook her head, her breathing uneven."I don't even know what I'm doing!""That's exactly the problem."

The air around them felt tighter now.Like something invisible had shifted.

The girl moved again. But not normally.

Her head turned in a sharp motion, too fast this time. Her expression shifted-blank, then confused, then blank again.Like something inside her couldn't decide what to be.Aera took a step back."This isn't right," she said."No," the leader replied quietly."It isn't."

Aera looked at him."Then tell me what this is."He hesitated.

Just for a second...But Aera saw it.And that hesitation meant—there was more."We don't choose people," he said finally.Aera frowned. "What does that mean?"

The silent one spoke this time."There's a signal," he said. "Something deeper than thought. Deeper than emotion."

Aera's chest tightened."And you connect to it?" she asked.

"Yes."

"And me?"

A pause.

"You're not just connected," the leader said.Aera's breath slowed."Then what am I?"

Another pause...This one heavier!

"An interference."

The word settled into something cold. Before she could respond..something else shifted.

Not here...Somewhere else.

Elsewhere:

She was tired. Not the kind sleep could fix-something quieter than that, heavier. The kind that settled deep beneath thought, beneath even feeling, as if it had been there long before she noticed it.

She stood at the kitchen sink, hands resting against the cool edge, eyes fixed on nothing in particular. The tap ran on in a thin, endless stream, unnoticed.

"Mama?"

The voice came from behind her..small, careful. She turned just enough to look. Her daughter stood there, a notebook pressed to her chest, fingers curled around its edges.

"Can you help me?"

The question lingered between them. For a moment..maybe longer..she didn't know how to answer.

"I will… later," she said softly.

The child nodded without complaint, without hesitation. Just quiet understanding. And then she was gone.

The woman closed her eyes.

"Later". It had become a habit, that word. A place where everything was kept waiting.

She reached forward and turned off the tap, and the sudden silence felt heavier than the sound ever had. The house stilled around her..too still.

She had done everything she was supposed to. Stayed strong when she had to. Let go when she needed to. Kept moving, even when it felt pointless. She had taken care of everyone.

So why did it still feel like something inside her had already stopped?

She stepped outside. The evening air brushed against her skin, cool and passing, like it didn't intend to stay. It didn't help. Nothing really did anymore.

People moved around her..voices overlapping, laughter slipping easily through the air. Life continued, effortless and untouched.

And she stood just outside of it. Not part of it. Just… near.

Then she heard it.

Soft enough to be mistaken for nothing. A melody.

She frowned faintly, her gaze shifting, searching without knowing what for. No one else reacted. The world didn't pause. But the sound remained..faint, steady, and somehow close.

Her breathing slowed without her noticing. The noise around her didn't disappear, it only loosened, as if it had taken a step back.

The melody stayed. Warm. Unhurried. Not pulling..just present. Like something had found her without trying.

Her chest tightened, but not with that familiar ache. Something gentler. Something she didn't recognize.

Her eyes stung. It surprised her. She hadn't cried in so long..not because the feeling wasn't there, but because the release never came, as if even that part of her had gone quiet.

The melody shifted, just slightly..and with it, something opened.

A memory surfaced. Her children laughing, voices overlapping in a way that once overwhelmed her but now felt distant and soft. A dinner table. Half-finished conversations. Warm plates. A small hand slipping into hers without asking.

Her breath caught.

The weight didn't disappear. It didn't break or vanish. But it eased..just enough to notice.

And for the first time in longer than she could remember, she didn't feel entirely alone inside her own life.

Slowly, she lifted her gaze.

Across the street, they stood.

"Seven figures"! Not close enough to see clearly, not far enough to ignore. There was no movement, no call.

And yet, she felt it..the same stillness, the same quiet presence the melody carried.

It didn't overwhelm her. It didn't demand anything. It simply existed.

And for a moment, everything within her settled. Not frozen. Not empty.

Just… at peace.

The melody faded gently, like it had never intended to stay. But something remained.

A warmth... Small.. Fragile.. But real.

Enough for her chest to rise without effort. Enough for her to stand there a little longer.

Enough to keep going.

Back to Aera:

Aera felt it.

That shift..not in front of her, but somewhere beyond, just out of reach. It wasn't sharp this time. It didn't tear through her like before.

It settled.

Calm—but not empty.

Her brows drew together slightly, not in confusion alone, but in something deeper. A feeling she couldn't name, yet couldn't ignore.

"What was that…?" she murmured.

No one answered.

They didn't need to.

She could see it in the stillness around them, in the way no one moved, no one spoke too quickly.

They had felt it too.

And this time...it didn't feel wrong.

Aera looked at them again, more carefully now. Not searching for answers, but for something else. Something she had almost noticed before.

"This isn't just hurting people," she said, her voice quieter, as if the realization didn't belong to her alone.

A pause followed, softer than before.

Then the gentle one spoke.

"No," he said.

There was something in the way he said it..not denial, not correction.

Recognition.

Aera felt this echo faintly in her chest.

"Then what is it?"

The question came out differently this time. Less demanding. More… searching.

Silence followed.

Not empty.

Just unfinished.

Because even now, they didn't have the words for it.

The pressure returned suddenly.

Sharp enough to make her flinch, her breath catching as it pressed in..but it didn't feel entirely unfamiliar anymore.

And then..everything shifted again.

Not the world.

Her.!

The sound around her softened, slipping further away. The edges of everything blurred, like reality itself was loosening its hold.

But this time, she didn't fight it.

Something in her… let it happen.

And then..she heard it.

Clearer now.

Closer.

Not loud.

Just undeniable.

"You can hear me now."

Aera stilled.

Not just from the sound..but from what came with it.A feeling... quiet and uninvited.

Not fear.

Not even surprise.

Something else.

Something that didn't make sense, and yet settled deep within her, like it had always been there.

As if she wasn't hearing it for the first time.

As if..she was remembering.

And that was what made her freeze.

it didn't feel like something new.

It felt like something she had forgotten.
