Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Edge of Silence

The deeper they walked into Eldergloom Forest, the quieter the world became.

Not completely.

But enough to notice.

The distant sounds of the village had long disappeared, replaced by the soft rustling of leaves and the occasional snap of twigs beneath their steps. Sunlight filtered through the canopy above in scattered fragments, shifting slowly as the branches swayed.

The forest felt… different.

Rynel stretched his arms as he walked, his voice breaking the silence. "This place never changes. Same trees, same path, same everything."

"That's because you never look closely," Tovin replied, already crouching near a patch of plants. His eyes moved quickly, studying the leaves with interest. "There are at least three types of herbs here that don't grow near the village."

Rynel glanced at him. "…You're the only one who cares about that."

"It could be useful."

Liora walked ahead without speaking, her gaze drifting between the trees as if she were listening to something deeper than the others. Kael followed slightly behind, his steps steady.

But his mind—

Was not.

"…Kael."

Liora slowed just enough to match his pace.

"You've been thinking a lot lately."

Kael didn't deny it.

"…Do you really want to go to the academy that badly?"

The question lingered.

Not light.

Not casual.

Kael's eyes lifted slightly, following a thin beam of sunlight breaking through the canopy.

"…When I was younger," he said quietly, "I thought this village was the whole world."

Rynel glanced back, curious now.

"But it's not," Kael continued. "It's just a small part of it."

His gaze lowered again, settling somewhere ahead.

"There are people out there… stronger than anything we've seen. Places bigger than anything we can imagine."

"And you want to be part of that?" Tovin asked.

Kael shook his head.

"…Not just part of it."

His grip tightened slightly on the wooden sword resting across his shoulder.

"I don't want to stand at the edge of the world… watching."

A brief pause followed.

Then—

"I want to stand at the center of it."

The words were calm.

But absolute.

Rynel let out a low whistle. "That's… actually pretty cool."

Liora didn't smile.

She was watching him.

Carefully.

"…That's not the only reason," she said.

Kael didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

"…Your father," she continued, her voice more measured now. "He's not just a normal villager, is he?"

Rynel blinked. "Wait—what?"

Tovin looked between them. "…I thought that too."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"He was a soldier."

The air seemed to shift slightly.

"Not just any soldier," Kael added. "He fought in places far from here."

Rynel's expression changed. "Then why is he here?"

Kael's gaze darkened just a little.

"…Because he had to leave."

Silence followed.

"There are things he doesn't talk about," Kael said. "But you can see it."

"In how he moves."

"In how he fights."

"In how he watches everything."

Liora nodded faintly.

"He's strong."

"He is," Kael replied.

His voice remained steady.

But something deeper sat beneath it.

"And even he… stopped."

That was what mattered.

Rynel frowned slightly. "So you don't want to end up like that?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

His eyes sharpened.

"I want to go further."

Further than this village.

Further than his father.

Further than what anyone expected.

"And the academy…" Tovin said slowly. "That's your way out?"

Kael shook his head again.

"It's not just a way out."

His voice grew firmer.

"It's the only place where strength actually matters."

No matter where you come from.

No matter your name.

"…If I stay here," he continued, "I'll never know how far I can go."

The forest seemed quieter now.

As if even the wind had paused.

Liora's expression softened slightly.

"…Then you should go."

Rynel nodded immediately. "Yeah. No point holding back."

Tovin hesitated, then nodded as well. "Just… don't die doing something stupid."

Kael let out a faint breath.

"I won't."

For a moment—

Everything felt simple again.

The forest.

The path.

His friends.

Then—

That feeling returned.

Stronger this time.

Kael slowed.

"…Do you feel that?" he asked.

Rynel frowned. "Feel what?"

The air felt heavier.

The light dimmer.

Liora's expression shifted.

"…Something's wrong."

Tovin stood up quickly. "We should head back."

Kael's gaze moved slowly across the trees.

The shadows between them.

Too still.

Too quiet.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

But even as he spoke—

He already knew.

They were too late.

Deep within Eldergloom Forest—

Something had begun to move.

And this time—

It wasn't going to ignore them.
