Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Road to Aetherion

The road to Aetherion stretched far longer than Kael had imagined, not simply because of the distance, but because the world did not reveal itself all at once. Instead, it unfolded gradually, piece by piece, forcing him to understand just how small his previous life had been.

The first village he passed through reminded him of Vareth. It was quiet, simple, and predictable, with narrow paths and familiar routines. Nothing about it stood out, and for a moment, it almost felt as though he had not left home at all. But that illusion did not last long. The second village was different. It was larger, busier, filled with more people and constant movement. Voices overlapped, carts rolled across uneven roads, and the rhythm of life carried a pace that Vareth had never known.

By the time he reached the third settlement, Kael no longer compared it to home.

Because he understood something clearly.

Vareth had never been special.

It was not the center of anything.

It was simply… one place among countless others.

That realization stayed with him as the road eventually led to something far greater.

A city.

From a distance, it was already overwhelming. High stone walls rose into the sky, stretching far beyond anything he had seen before. The structure alone carried weight, not just in size, but in presence. Guards stood at the entrance, their armor polished, their expressions firm and alert as they watched every traveler who approached.

Kael stepped forward without hesitation.

"Name and purpose," one of the guards asked, his voice steady and practiced, as if he had spoken those same words hundreds of times before.

"…Kael," he replied calmly. "Traveling."

The guard's gaze lingered for a moment, briefly scanning his posture, his clothes, the way he stood. There was no hostility in his eyes, only routine judgment. After a short pause, he nodded.

"Move along."

Kael passed through the gates.

And the world changed.

The moment he stepped inside, the difference became undeniable. The city was alive in a way he had never experienced before. It wasn't chaotic, but it was constant. Voices layered over one another, footsteps echoed across stone paths, and merchants called out to passing travelers, advertising goods that Kael had never seen in his life.

Weapons lined the stalls, crafted with detail far beyond anything found in a village. Rolls of cloth in colors he couldn't name hung neatly from wooden frames. Strange tools, whose purposes he couldn't even guess, filled tables and shelves. Everything moved, everything shifted, everything felt faster.

Kael walked through it carefully, his gaze moving from one detail to another without lingering too long. He observed, but did not get lost in it.

So this is a city…

And yet, deep down, he knew.

This wasn't the peak of it.

This wasn't the largest the world had to offer.

That thought had barely settled when something disrupted the flow around him.

A figure dashed past.

Fast.

Too fast.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly as he caught sight of a hand gripping a small pouch tightly, the movement unnatural compared to the steady pace of the crowd. A moment later, a voice cut through the air behind him.

"Stop!"

It was sharp. Clear. Focused.

Kael turned.

A girl moved through the crowd, her steps precise despite the people in her way. Her expression remained calm, but her eyes were locked onto the fleeing figure. Behind her, a boy followed, pushing through the crowd more directly, his movements less refined but no less determined.

Their clothes stood out.

Not overly extravagant.

But unmistakably well-made.

Nobles.

Kael understood that instantly.

The thief changed direction abruptly, weaving through the crowd in an attempt to escape. For a fraction of a second, Kael simply watched.

Then—

He moved.

The noise around him faded, not because it disappeared, but because his focus narrowed. The shifting bodies, the uneven spacing, the unpredictable movement of the crowd—none of it mattered anymore.

Only the target did.

The thief turned left.

Kael adjusted.

A single step placed him in the path before the next movement even finished.

The man shifted again—

And ran straight into him.

Kael's hand shot forward without hesitation. His grip locked firmly onto the man's arm, twisting just enough to break his momentum without using unnecessary force. The thief stumbled instantly, losing balance as the pouch slipped from his hand and fell to the ground.

For a brief moment, the space around them stilled.

Not silent—

But aware.

"…Got you," Kael said quietly, his voice calm, controlled.

Footsteps approached quickly.

The girl arrived first. Her breathing remained steady despite the chase, her focus immediately shifting to the fallen pouch. She picked it up and checked its contents with practiced efficiency.

"…Nothing missing," she said.

The boy reached them moments later, slightly out of breath, but smiling as if the situation had already resolved itself.

"Well—that saves us trouble."

Kael released the thief without resistance. The man didn't hesitate. He scrambled to his feet and disappeared into the crowd without looking back.

No one chased him.

It wasn't worth it.

The boy turned to Kael, his gaze filled with open curiosity.

"…That was fast."

Kael shrugged slightly.

"He ran in a straight line."

The boy laughed.

"I like that answer."

The girl stepped forward next, her posture composed, her gaze steady.

"…Thank you," she said.

Her tone was calm.

But genuine.

Kael nodded once.

"…Be more careful."

There was a brief pause after that, one that felt less like silence and more like evaluation.

The boy broke it first.

"You're heading somewhere," he said, not as a question, but as a conclusion.

Kael glanced at him briefly.

"…Yes."

"Aetherion?" the boy asked.

Kael paused for just a moment before nodding.

"…Same here," the boy said, a small grin forming. "Entrance exam."

The girl let out a quiet sigh.

"…Aren."

"Right."

He straightened slightly.

"Aren Valen."

Kael met his gaze.

"…Kael."

Aren tilted his head slightly.

"Just Kael?"

"Yes."

He didn't press further.

Instead, he glanced around the city.

"First time in a place like this?"

Kael nodded.

"…It shows a little," Aren said casually.

Kael didn't deny it.

"…This isn't even a large city," the girl—Seris—added.

Kael looked at her again.

"…It isn't?"

She shook her head.

"This is small compared to the capital."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly as he processed that.

"…Then how big is the capital?"

Aren chuckled.

"Big enough that you won't see the end of it in a day."

That alone made Kael glance around once more.

If this wasn't large—

Then the world was far bigger than he had imagined.

"And Aetherion?" he asked.

Seris answered without hesitation.

"It doesn't belong to any city. It stands on its own land, independent. Larger than most territories."

Aren crossed his arms.

"And not just humans go there."

Kael's attention sharpened.

"…What do you mean?"

"Elves. Dwarves. Sometimes even beastkin," Aren said.

Kael remained silent for a moment.

"…Different species."

Seris nodded.

"If they have talent, they're accepted."

That changed things.

Not just an academy—

But a place where the entire world gathered.

"…Then you're both nobles," Kael said.

Aren blinked.

"…That obvious?"

"Yes."

Seris didn't deny it.

"…Does it matter?" she asked.

Kael shook his head.

"No."

Aren smiled slightly.

"Good. Because it doesn't to us either."

That—

Was unexpected.

Kael studied them briefly, then shifted his gaze forward.

"…The road continues from here?"

Aren nodded.

"Yeah. Same direction."

There was a short pause.

Then—

"…Then we travel together," Aren said.

Not a suggestion.

A decision.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

But he didn't refuse.

Seris had already started walking.

"…We shouldn't waste time."

Kael followed.

Not because he trusted them.

Not yet.

But because their destination was the same.

And somewhere far beyond the city—

Aetherion awaited.

Larger than anything he had imagined.

And now—

Closer than ever before.
