Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Depth of the Trial

The deeper they moved into the forest, the quieter it became.

Not empty.

Not calm.

But heavy.

It was the kind of silence that pressed against the senses, not to soothe—but to warn. The air grew denser with each step, the scent of damp soil and old leaves thickening as the terrain shifted beneath them. Roots twisted higher above the ground, the soil darkened, and even the light filtering through the canopy felt dimmer.

Kael walked at the front, his pace steady, his awareness stretched outward. His gaze moved constantly—ground, trees, distance, patterns—never settling for long.

The deeper we go, the more active this area becomes.

Behind him, the others followed with their own vigilance.

Aren rolled his shoulders once, his expression no longer relaxed, his movements sharper than before.

This place is wrong, he thought. Feels like something's watching…

Lyra's gaze swept across the forest, but her focus extended beyond sight alone.

The mana density has increased, she noted internally. That means stronger creatures… or stronger interference.

Draven walked at the rear.

Quiet.

Measured.

His attention wasn't on the forest.

It was on them.

They haven't broken formation, he observed. Good.

For now.

Up ahead, Kael slowed.

Not abruptly.

Just enough.

"…Stop."

The reaction was immediate.

No hesitation.

No questions.

Kael crouched slightly, his gaze fixed on the ground ahead.

Tracks.

Large.

Deep.

Multiple.

Not human.

"…Pack," he said quietly.

Aren's posture tightened.

"…How many?"

Kael scanned the area again—ground, trees, angles, spacing.

"…At least five."

Lyra's eyes narrowed.

"…Not normal creatures."

Kael nodded once.

"…No."

As if answering them—

A low sound spread through the forest.

A growl.

Close.

Then another.

From a different direction.

The formation shifted instantly.

Aren stepped slightly outward, adjusting his position to cover one side. Lyra moved closer to the center, her posture tightening as faint traces of magic gathered again.

Draven lowered his stance.

Ready.

The first creature stepped out from between the trees.

A wolf.

But not natural.

Its body was larger, leaner, its muscles coiled with unnatural tension. Dark fur absorbed the light around it, and its eyes carried a faint, unnatural glow.

Then another appeared.

And another.

They didn't rush.

They circled.

Testing.

"They're coordinated," Lyra said quietly.

"Then break that coordination," Draven replied.

No hesitation.

No discussion.

The moment the first wolf lunged—

They moved.

Kael stepped forward, intercepting the attack instead of retreating. His blade met the creature's movement at an angle, redirecting its force rather than stopping it. The momentum carried past him just enough for him to pivot and strike again.

The blade connected with its side.

Not deep.

Durable.

Aren engaged the second immediately, his approach direct as he met the attack head-on. His strike halted its advance—but only briefly. The creature recovered faster than expected, its claws scraping across his guard.

"…Tch—!"

"Don't trade blows," Kael said sharply.

Aren adjusted instantly.

"…Yeah. Got it."

Lyra lifted her hand.

The air tightened.

Then released.

A controlled burst struck one of the wolves attempting to circle behind them, disrupting its movement and forcing it off position.

They rely on positioning, she realized.

Not just strength.

Draven moved.

Efficient.

Precise.

He stepped into range of a wolf and struck once.

Clean.

Exact.

The blade landed at the precise moment the creature shifted its weight.

It collapsed instantly.

No follow-up.

No hesitation.

One strike… enough, Kael noted.

That confirmed it.

He targets weaknesses.

Not openings.

The remaining wolves changed.

Their circling tightened.

Their movements sharpened.

Less testing.

More intent.

"They're adapting," Lyra said.

"…So are we," Aren replied.

Kael shifted slightly.

"Stay close. Don't let them isolate anyone."

This time—

They moved first.

The exchange accelerated.

Faster.

Sharper.

More connected.

Aren pressed forward, forcing engagement.

Lyra disrupted positioning.

Draven eliminated threats the moment they exposed themselves.

And Kael—

Adjusted everything in between.

Movement.

Timing.

Flow.

Within moments, the balance shifted.

Then—

It broke.

The last wolf retreated, vanishing into the forest as quickly as it had appeared.

Silence followed.

But this time—

It felt earned.

Aren exhaled, rolling his shoulders slightly.

"…Yeah. That wasn't normal."

Lyra lowered her hand slowly.

"…No. It wasn't."

Draven's gaze flickered toward the direction the wolves had fled.

"…We're closer to the center."

Kael nodded.

"…Which means it gets worse."

A brief pause followed.

Then—

A new sound.

Footsteps.

Not hidden.

Not cautious.

Approaching directly.

Kael's gaze shifted instantly.

"…Someone's coming."

The group turned as one.

From between the trees, a figure stepped forward.

Tall.

Composed.

His presence carried quiet confidence, his posture relaxed—but not careless.

Behind him—

Two more.

Support.

Formation.

"…Interesting," the boy said, his gaze moving across them.

"…Four."

Aren smirked slightly.

"…You counting or planning?"

The boy didn't react.

His eyes shifted instead.

To Kael.

"…You're the one leading."

Not a question.

Kael didn't deny it.

"…For now."

A faint pause followed.

Then—

"…Give me your tokens."

The words came calmly.

Directly.

As if the outcome was already decided.

Lyra's expression didn't change.

Draven's gaze sharpened slightly.

Aren's grin widened.

"…Yeah," he said lightly, "that's not happening."

The air shifted.

Different this time.

This wasn't instinct.

Wasn't survival.

This—

Was intention.

Kael's gaze remained steady.

So this is the next stage…

Not just beasts.

Not just the environment.

But people.

Thinking.

Planning.

Competing.

And unlike before—

This wouldn't end quickly.
