Chapter 297 - Chapter 297: The Ninth Door

The crossroads had become silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Silent in the way a battlefield became silent after the final sword fell.

Kael stood in the center of the endless network, staring at the place where the Hollow had once existed. The creature called Nox was gone. Not destroyed, but changed into something that could exist without consuming everything around it.

The countless doors had reopened.

The seven worlds were still connected.

The white tree at the center of the crossroads continued to grow.

For the first time since Kael had entered this impossible place, everything seemed stable.

Then the ninth door opened.

It was small.

Almost insignificant.

Compared to the millions of doors surrounding it, the ninth door looked like a crack in reality.

But every person present noticed it.

Aren was the first to speak.

"That wasn't there before."

"No," Seraphine replied.

She was already studying it.

"According to every calculation I've made, it shouldn't be possible."

Lyra looked at her.

"You've said that about almost everything today."

"This is different."

"How?"

Seraphine pointed toward the door.

"The others connect to something."

She paused.

"This one doesn't."

Kael slowly walked toward it.

Elara immediately grabbed his wrist.

"Don't."

Kael stopped.

"Why?"

"Because that door isn't connected to the network."

Kael looked at it.

"Then what's behind it?"

Elara's expression became troubled.

"I don't know."

That answer frightened Kael more than anything else.

Elara knew the crossroads better than anyone.

She had guarded it for three thousand years.

She knew the doors.

She knew the pathways.

She knew the seven worlds.

She even knew the Hollow.

Yet she didn't know what was behind this door.

Kael stepped closer.

The door was made of dark wood.

There were no symbols.

No markings.

No handle.

Only a single sentence carved across its surface.

DO NOT OPEN.

Aren stared at it.

"Well."

Lyra sighed.

"I already know what he's going to do."

Kael looked at her.

"I haven't done anything."

"You walked toward the forbidden door."

"I was curious."

"That's worse."

Selene approached the door.

She opened her book.

The pages turned by themselves.

Then stopped.

There was nothing written on the page.

She frowned.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"History doesn't recognize this door."

Kael looked at her.

"Meaning?"

"Nothing has ever been recorded about it."

Mira added quietly,

"Not even forgotten history?"

Selene shook her head.

"No."

Caelum stared at the door with his silver eyes.

Then his expression changed.

"I can't see beyond it."

Kael frowned.

"You can see through dimensions."

"Yes."

"You can see possible futures."

"Some."

"Then why can't you see through that?"

Caelum looked at Kael.

"Because there is no future behind it."

Silence.

Kael placed his hand against the door.

The moment his fingers touched the wood...

The entire crossroads trembled.

The seven worlds flickered.

Every World Tree reacted.

The white tree at the center bent toward the door.

Elara stepped backward.

"Kael."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"Take your hand away."

Kael did.

The trembling stopped.

Aren looked at the door.

"Maybe we should leave it alone."

For once, everyone agreed.

Kael turned away.

Then he heard something.

A voice.

Quiet.

Almost impossible to hear.

"Kael."

He stopped.

Nobody else reacted.

He turned back.

The door remained closed.

"Kael."

The voice came again.

It sounded like a child.

Kael walked closer.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

Then the voice whispered,

"I've been waiting."

Kael's expression changed.

Elara noticed.

"What did you hear?"

"Someone."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

The door suddenly opened one inch.

Darkness appeared behind it.

Not the darkness of the Hollow.

This darkness was different.

It felt ancient.

Kael could feel something staring at him.

Not from the other side.

From somewhere much farther away.

Aren raised his sword.

"Everyone back."

Nobody moved.

The door opened another inch.

A cold wind passed through the crossroads.

The white tree's leaves began falling.

One by one.

Kael caught one.

The leaf turned black in his hand.

Elara's face became pale.

"Close it."

Kael looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because it's not a door."

"What is it?"

She stared at the darkness.

"A wound."

The word echoed.

Kael understood.

The door wasn't built.

It had formed because something had torn reality.

Something had created an opening.

Something outside the system was trying to enter.

Seraphine suddenly shouted,

"Kael!"

He looked at her.

"The network is losing stability."

The seven worlds began flickering.

Lyra immediately raised her staff.

"I can stabilize them."

"How long?"

"Maybe ten minutes."

"Do it."

Lyra and Seraphine began working together.

The others moved into position.

Aren guarded the network.

Caelum watched the darkness.

Selene and Mira began recording every change.

Rowan placed his Key against the roots.

Elara remained beside Kael.

"Whatever is behind that door..."

Kael looked at her.

"...it's connected to you."

Elara shook her head.

"No."

"Then why is it calling my name?"

She didn't answer.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Elara."

She finally spoke.

"Because you opened it."

Kael froze.

"I did?"

"Not today."

She looked at him.

"Three thousand years ago."

The memory returned.

A room.

A wooden door.

Elara crying.

Kael standing before her.

But there was another presence.

Something behind the door.

Something begging to be released.

Kael had forgotten.

Not accidentally.

He had erased the memory.

Again.

"What did I do?"

Elara whispered,

"You asked me to seal it."

"What?"

"You said it couldn't be allowed to enter the worlds."

Kael stared.

"What was it?"

Elara looked toward the door.

"The first mistake."

The darkness moved.

Something touched the other side.

Knock.

Everyone froze.

Knock.

Aren tightened his grip.

Knock.

Three slow knocks.

Then a voice.

Not a child.

Not a woman.

Not a man.

Something that sounded like millions of voices speaking together.

"Kael."

The network shook.

"Open."

Kael stared at the door.

The voice continued.

"You promised."

His blood ran cold.

He remembered.

A promise.

A promise he had made before the seven Gardeners.

Before the Dreamer.

Before the first World Tree.

A promise to something that existed before the worlds.

Kael whispered,

"I remember."

Elara looked at him.

"What?"

Kael stared at the door.

"I promised to let it out."

The door opened wider.

A hand appeared.

It was human.

Small.

A child's hand.

It reached through the darkness.

Kael stepped forward.

Elara grabbed him.

"No!"

Kael looked at her.

"I made the promise."

"You were a child."

"I still made it."

"You didn't understand what you were doing."

"Maybe."

Kael looked at the hand.

"But I understand now."

He gently took it.

The moment their hands touched...

Reality stopped.

Everything became still.

Aren.

Lyra.

Selene.

Caelum.

Seraphine.

Mira.

Rowan.

Elara.

All frozen.

Only Kael could move.

The child stepped through the door.

He was small.

Perhaps seven years old.

His hair was white.

His skin was pale.

His eyes were completely black.

Kael stared at him.

"Who are you?"

The child looked up.

"You forgot me."

Kael's chest tightened.

"I'm sorry."

The child smiled.

"You always say that."

Kael froze.

The child stepped closer.

"You forgot the Dreamer."

"You forgot Elara."

"You forgot the Gardeners."

"You forgot the Hollow."

"And you forgot me."

Kael stared.

"Who are you?"

The child touched Kael's chest.

The white seed cracked.

"I am the first world."

Kael's eyes widened.

The child smiled.

"The world before worlds."

The crossroads trembled.

The seven World Trees bent.

The network began collapsing.

The child continued.

"You created me."

Kael shook his head.

"No."

"Yes."

"You existed before me."

The child smiled.

"That's what you wanted to believe."

Kael felt something terrible approaching.

"What are you?"

The child leaned closer.

"I am what remains when a world dies."

Kael's breath stopped.

The child whispered,

"And I've been very lonely."

The frozen world suddenly moved again.

The others could move.

Lyra screamed.

"Kael!"

Aren rushed forward.

But the child raised one hand.

A barrier appeared.

Everyone stopped.

Kael turned toward them.

"Don't attack."

Aren shouted,

"Move away from it!"

Kael shook his head.

"He isn't attacking."

The child smiled.

"Not yet."

Elara stared at him.

"You shouldn't exist."

The child looked at her.

"You said that before."

Elara's eyes filled with fear.

Kael looked between them.

"You know him."

Elara nodded.

"Yes."

"Who is he?"

She whispered,

"His name is Origin."

The child smiled.

"That's what you called me."

Kael stared.

"Origin."

The child nodded.

"Before the Dreamer."

"Before the Gardeners."

"Before the first world."

"There was me."

Kael looked toward the endless doors.

"Then why did you disappear?"

Origin's smile faded.

"Because you killed me."

Silence.

Kael's expression changed.

"I killed you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you were afraid."

Kael closed his eyes.

Another memory surfaced.

A world without stars.

A child standing alone.

Kael holding a sword.

The Dreamer crying.

Elara screaming.

And Origin standing before them.

Kael had raised the sword.

He had killed the first world.

Not because it was evil.

Because it was growing.

It had begun consuming reality.

Kael had ended it.

Then he had sealed its remains behind the ninth door.

He had promised to return.

But he forgot.

Origin looked at him.

"You said you would come back."

Kael whispered,

"I did."

"You said you would give me another chance."

"I did."

"You said you would never forget me."

Kael looked at the child.

"I'm sorry."

Origin smiled.

"You always say that."

Then the child touched the white seed.

The crack spread.

The seed shattered.

Kael's connection to the seven worlds disappeared.

Every door closed.

The crossroads went dark.

Elara screamed.

"Kael!"

He reached toward her.

But darkness swallowed everything.

The final thing Kael heard was Origin's voice.

"Now..."

"...let's build the world you promised me."

Then nothing remained.
