The sky broke.
Thousands of cracks spread across the heavens of the ninth world, each one growing wider as something on the other side forced its way through. The peaceful blue sky disappeared beneath layers of black fractures. The floating mountains trembled. Rivers stopped flowing. The great World Tree raised its branches toward the heavens, and every root beneath the city began glowing.
For the first time since Kael had arrived, the people of the First Connected World were afraid.
Kael stood at the center of the city with his sword in his hand.
Above him, the enormous golden eye stared down.
Then another appeared.
And another.
Soon, the entire sky was filled with eyes.
Aren looked upward.
"That's a lot of eyes."
Lyra tightened her grip on her staff.
"Don't make jokes."
"I'm not joking."
"You are."
"I'm really not."
Kael ignored them.
His attention remained on the cracks.
The creatures beyond them weren't entering yet.
They were waiting.
Observing.
Testing the world.
Aria stepped forward.
"Everyone inside the city."
Her voice spread across the entire civilization.
"Do not attack."
Aren looked at her.
"That's your plan?"
"If we attack first, they will know exactly what we can do."
Kael nodded.
"She's right."
Aria looked toward him.
"They aren't here to conquer us."
Kael frowned.
"Then what?"
"They want the connection."
Kael looked at the mark on his palm.
The ninth branch had begun glowing.
"They're afraid of it."
Aria nodded.
"Everything that existed before the worlds was separate."
"The connection changed that."
"It created something they couldn't control."
Kael looked at the cracks.
"Us."
"Yes."
A voice echoed from above.
"You misunderstand."
The enormous golden eye moved.
"We do not fear your connection."
"We fear what it will become."
Kael raised his head.
"What will it become?"
The voice answered.
"A network capable of remembering everything."
Kael's expression changed.
"If every world becomes connected..."
"Nothing can be forgotten."
"Nothing can truly die."
"Nothing can be erased."
The eye narrowed.
"And that is precisely the problem."
Kael's grip tightened.
"You want the worlds separated."
"We want order."
"You want isolation."
"We want balance."
"You want control."
The voice became silent.
Kael smiled.
"I'll take that as a yes."
The first creature descended.
It emerged through one of the cracks.
Its body was enormous.
It resembled a knight made from black stone, with four arms and a crown of floating rings around its head.
The moment it touched the atmosphere...
The World Tree reacted.
Roots erupted from the ground.
They wrapped around the creature.
The creature pulled.
The roots cracked.
Aria's expression changed.
"That's impossible."
Kael watched carefully.
The creature broke free.
It landed outside the city.
The impact created a crater.
Aren smiled.
"Finally."
He stepped forward.
Kael stopped him.
"Wait."
Aren looked back.
"Why?"
Kael pointed toward the creature.
"Look."
The creature wasn't attacking.
It was kneeling.
Its four arms were placed against the ground.
A strange black pattern spread from its hands.
The World Tree's roots began turning dark.
Aria's face became pale.
"It's poisoning the network."
Kael immediately moved.
"Lyra!"
She understood.
Her staff struck the ground.
A massive barrier formed around the tree.
Seraphine joined her.
"Don't block the corruption."
Lyra looked at her.
"What?"
"Redirect it."
"Where?"
"Into me."
Lyra stared.
"No."
Seraphine smiled.
"I can handle it."
"You nearly trapped yourself in the crossroads."
"And survived."
"This is different."
"I know."
Seraphine stepped forward.
"I need to understand what it is."
Kael interrupted.
"Not alone."
Seraphine looked at him.
Kael extended his hand.
"We do it together."
She nodded.
Lyra joined them.
The three stood around the World Tree.
The corruption reached the barrier.
It spread like black veins.
Kael touched it.
The moment he did...
A flood of information entered his mind.
He saw a place outside the worlds.
A vast realm without stars.
Thousands of beings lived there.
They had no names.
No civilizations.
No individual identities.
They existed as one enormous system.
Perfect.
Orderly.
Unchanging.
And ancient.
Kael understood.
These beings weren't gods.
They weren't monsters.
They were the remnants of the original existence.
Before the first world had separated reality into individual lives.
They had existed as one.
Then the first world appeared.
Individual consciousness appeared.
Emotion appeared.
Choice appeared.
Connection appeared.
The old beings considered it a flaw.
They wanted to return everything to the way it had been.
One existence.
One will.
No conflict.
No death.
No loneliness.
Kael opened his eyes.
"They don't want to destroy us."
Lyra looked at him.
"What?"
"They want to merge us."
Seraphine's expression changed.
"Everything?"
"Everything."
Kael looked toward the sky.
"They want every world to become one consciousness."
Aria's face hardened.
"Then they're worse than I thought."
Kael shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the people around him.
"They genuinely believe they're saving us."
Aren stepped forward.
"That's usually when things become dangerous."
Kael nodded.
"Exactly."
The creature outside the city suddenly stood.
Its four arms spread.
The black pattern expanded.
More creatures began descending.
One.
Ten.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
The sky became filled with them.
The people of the city began preparing.
Aria raised her hand.
"Do not panic!"
Her voice spread across the city.
"This world has survived for thousands of years."
"We were created to withstand this."
Kael looked at her.
"You've fought them before?"
"Not them."
"Then how do you know?"
Aria looked toward the World Tree.
"Because the tree remembers."
Kael smiled.
"Then let's use those memories."
The World Tree responded.
Its branches began glowing.
The entire city changed.
Buildings opened.
Hidden weapons emerged.
Ancient formations appeared beneath the streets.
The civilization had been preparing for this moment for thousands of years.
Not through armies.
Through connection.
Every citizen became part of the defense.
Mages joined hands.
Warriors stood beside healers.
Children were taken underground.
Elders activated ancient barriers.
The city's entire population became a single network.
Kael stared.
"This is incredible."
Aria smiled.
"This is what happens when everyone understands that the world belongs to them."
Kael nodded.
Then he looked toward his companions.
"Aren."
"Yes?"
"Take the western side."
Aren grinned.
"Finally."
"Lyra and Seraphine, protect the World Tree."
"Understood."
"Selene and Mira, preserve the network."
They nodded.
"Caelum, watch the sky."
Caelum's eyes turned silver.
"Already doing it."
"Rowan, help Aria."
Rowan nodded.
"Elara..."
She was already beside him.
"I know."
Kael smiled.
"Stay with me."
The first wave descended.
Aren charged.
His sword cut through the first creature.
This time, his blade didn't simply cut its body.
It severed its connection to the black network.
The creature froze.
Aren struck again.
The creature disappeared.
"One."
Another attacked.
Aren turned.
"Two."
Three more came.
Aren smiled.
"Better."
On the eastern side, Lyra unleashed a storm of magic.
Lightning struck the invading creatures.
Seraphine modified the spells in real time.
"Left!"
Lyra moved.
"Behind!"
She spun.
"Above!"
A barrier appeared.
The two fought as if they had trained together for years.
Seraphine analyzed.
Lyra executed.
Every spell became stronger.
Every mistake became a lesson.
Meanwhile, Selene's book had become enormous.
Pages filled the air.
Mira sent memories through them.
Every fallen soldier was remembered.
Every destroyed building was recorded.
Every lost piece of the city was preserved.
The network refused to forget.
Caelum stood on the highest tower.
His eyes had become completely silver.
"Kael."
Kael looked up.
"What?"
"They're not attacking randomly."
"Where are they going?"
"Three points."
Caelum pointed.
"The World Tree."
"The city center."
"And..."
He hesitated.
"Your location."
Kael frowned.
"Me?"
"They're trying to isolate you."
Elara looked at Kael.
"Because you're the Connector."
Kael nodded.
"If they capture me..."
"They can control the network."
Kael looked toward the sky.
"Then they won't."
The strongest enemy descended.
It was different from the others.
Larger.
Its armor was white.
Its crown had nine rings.
And unlike the others...
It had a face.
An old man's face.
He landed before Kael.
The ground cracked.
Kael raised his sword.
The being looked at him.
"You are the Connector."
"Yes."
"You have been given a choice."
Kael narrowed his eyes.
"What choice?"
"Separate the worlds."
"No."
"Return the connection to us."
"No."
"Then you will watch everything you care about disappear."
Kael smiled.
"You've misunderstood something."
The being frowned.
"What?"
Kael lowered his sword.
"I'm not protecting the worlds."
He looked around.
Aren fighting.
Lyra casting spells.
Selene recording.
Mira preserving memories.
Seraphine analyzing.
Caelum watching.
Rowan protecting the city.
Elara standing beside him.
"I'm protecting the people who protect them."
The being's expression changed.
Kael raised his hand.
The entire network responded.
Not just the ninth world.
The seven worlds.
Every World Tree.
Every Gardener.
Every connected life.
They felt the invasion.
And they responded.
The first world sent warriors.
The second sent mages.
The third sent healers.
The fourth sent scholars.
The fifth sent spirits.
The sixth sent beasts.
The seventh sent dragons.
They couldn't physically cross yet.
But their powers could.
Magic flowed through the network.
Memories flowed.
Knowledge flowed.
Energy flowed.
The ninth world became the center of something enormous.
For the first time...
The seven worlds fought together.
The invading army stopped.
The old being stared in disbelief.
"You connected them already."
Kael smiled.
"Yes."
"Impossible."
"No."
Kael stepped forward.
"It's simply what happens when people stop standing alone."
The being raised its hand.
The sky darkened.
Every creature prepared to attack.
Kael raised his sword.
"Everyone."
The network responded.
Aren's blade glowed.
Lyra's staff burned with magic.
Selene's pages illuminated.
Caelum's eyes became stars.
Seraphine's calculations formed a gigantic array.
Mira's memories became light.
Rowan's Key awakened.
Elara placed her hand over Kael's.
And the World Tree opened its branches.
A beam of white light shot into the sky.
It connected every World Tree.
Seven worlds.
One crossroads.
One ninth world.
One network.
The invading creatures were caught inside it.
They didn't die.
They became disconnected.
One by one, their black links vanished.
The old being screamed.
"Stop!"
Kael looked at him.
"You came here to take our connection."
He raised his hand.
"So I'll show you what connection actually means."
The light exploded.
The entire army vanished.
Not destroyed.
Returned to the realm from which they had come.
The cracks in the sky began closing.
The old being remained.
He looked at Kael.
"This isn't over."
Kael nodded.
"I know."
"You've started something you cannot control."
Kael looked toward the seven worlds.
"No."
He smiled.
"I started something I don't have to control."
The old being disappeared.
The sky became clear.
Silence returned.
Then...
The city erupted in cheers.
Aren lowered his sword.
"That went well."
Lyra stared at him.
"We almost died."
"Still went well."
Kael laughed.
For the first time in a long time...
He wasn't carrying the victory alone.
He looked toward the World Tree.
The ninth branch on his palm had changed.
It now had a small leaf.
A new connection.
A permanent one.
Aria approached.
"The invasion was only the beginning."
Kael nodded.
"I know."
"The old ones will return."
"I know."
"And the seven worlds will have to decide whether they truly want to remain connected."
Kael looked toward the distant doors.
"Then we'll give them a choice."
Aria smiled.
"That's all?"
Kael nodded.
"No empire."
"No forced alliance."
"No ruler."
"Just a door."
He looked at the bridge leading toward the crossroads.
"They can choose whether to walk through it."
Elara smiled.
"And if they refuse?"
Kael looked toward the seven worlds.
"Then we'll wait."
"Like you waited for me?"
Kael looked at her.
"Exactly."
Elara smiled.
But before they could celebrate...
The World Tree suddenly spoke.
Its voice was different this time.
Serious.
Afraid.
"Kael."
He turned.
"What?"
"There is something you need to see."
The tree opened one of its largest branches.
A vision appeared.
A distant world.
A world that wasn't one of the seven.
A world that wasn't the ninth.
A world that wasn't connected to the crossroads.
In that world...
A young man stood beneath a dead tree.
He looked toward the sky.
Then toward a glowing symbol on his hand.
The same tree-shaped symbol Kael carried.
The young man whispered:
"Kael."
Kael froze.
Elara's smile disappeared.
Aria stared at the vision.
Aren lowered his sword.
Lyra's eyes widened.
The young man looked directly toward them.
As if he could see through the vision.
Then he smiled.
"You're late."
The vision disappeared.
Kael stood motionless.
"Who was that?"
The World Tree answered.
"Another Connector."
Kael's expression hardened.
"Another me?"
"No."
The tree paused.
"Someone who was supposed to become you."
Kael stared at the empty vision.
For the first time since the Age of Worlds had begun...
He realized the greatest mystery wasn't the nine worlds.
It was how many Connectors had existed before him.
And how many had failed.
