Chapter 306 - Chapter 306: The Road Without Elara

The crossroads had never felt so empty.

The nine great doors still stood exactly where they had always stood, their ancient frames covered in glowing symbols and roots, but something fundamental had changed. The network was alive again, yet its presence no longer pressed against Kael's mind. Before, he had been able to feel distant worlds through the connection, faint impressions of forests, cities, oceans, mountains, and countless lives. Now those sensations had become quieter. The network had become something shared rather than something belonging to him.

Kael stood in the center of the crossroads without moving. His eyes remained fixed on the place where Elara had disappeared. There was no trace of her left behind. No magical residue. No lingering light. Not even a fragment of her aura. It was as if she had never stood there at all.

Aren was the first to speak.

"Kael."

Kael didn't answer.

Aren took another step.

"Kael."

"I'm fine."

The answer came too quickly.

Aren stopped.

Lyra looked at him from the side. She knew that tone. Everyone did. Kael wasn't fine. But none of them knew what to say.

Selene closed her book and held it against her chest. Seraphine stood beside her, staring at the empty space where Elara had been. Caelum had lowered his head, his silver eyes dim. Mira silently gathered the loose pages scattered across the floor. Rowan leaned against his sword, breathing heavily after everything that had happened.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to move.

Kael finally turned away.

"We're leaving."

Lyra frowned.

"Now?"

"Yes."

"You just lost Elara."

Kael's steps stopped.

Lyra's voice softened.

"You don't have to pretend nothing happened."

Kael looked over his shoulder.

"I'm not pretending."

"Then what are you doing?"

He looked at his hand.

The ninth branch of the mark remained bright.

The tenth branch glowed faintly.

The eleventh light floated beyond the network.

"I'm doing what she asked."

Lyra stared at him.

"Finding her?"

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Aren sighed.

"You really think she's somewhere out there?"

"I don't think."

Kael looked toward the doors.

"I know."

Seraphine finally spoke.

"How?"

"Because she told me."

"That isn't proof."

"No."

Kael looked at her.

"But I don't need proof."

Seraphine opened her mouth, then stopped. She knew there was no argument she could make against that.

Caelum suddenly raised his head.

"I saw something."

Everyone turned.

Kael walked toward him.

"What?"

Caelum's eyes had begun glowing again.

"When Elara disappeared, I tried to look into the future."

"And?"

"I saw nothing."

Kael's expression tightened.

"Nothing again?"

Caelum nodded.

"But this time it was different."

"How?"

Caelum looked toward the eleventh light.

"There was one point."

"Where?"

"Beyond the network."

Kael's gaze followed his.

"Did you see Elara?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Caelum swallowed.

"I saw a road."

"A road?"

"Yes."

"Where did it lead?"

Caelum's face became pale.

"I couldn't see."

Kael frowned.

"You just said you saw a road."

"I saw where it started."

"Where?"

Caelum pointed toward the first door.

"It started here."

Kael looked at the door.

"And the end?"

Caelum shook his head.

"There was no end."

The silence returned.

Then Aren walked toward the first door.

"Well, that's convenient."

Kael looked at him.

"What?"

"If we're going to find Elara, we have to start somewhere."

Aren placed his hand against the door.

The ancient symbols immediately illuminated.

Kael walked toward him.

"Wait."

Aren looked back.

"What?"

"That door leads to the First World."

"Isn't that where we need to go?"

Kael nodded.

"But the First World is not one of the seven."

Selene immediately understood.

"The original world."

Kael looked at the door.

"The place where the cycle began."

Seraphine frowned.

"And where your memories were sealed."

Kael nodded.

"Which means if Elara is connected to the beginning..."

"...we may find her there."

Aren smiled.

"Then let's go."

Kael placed his hand against the door.

The symbol on his palm responded.

The door opened.

A violent wind rushed through the crossroads.

Everyone shielded their faces as dust and leaves were pulled toward the opening. The temperature dropped instantly. Beyond the doorway was a vast forest beneath a crimson sky.

Kael stepped through.

The others followed.

The moment his foot touched the ground, he felt it.

The First World was dead.

Not completely.

But compared to the memory he had seen, it was almost unrecognizable.

The grass was gray.

The trees were twisted.

The rivers had dried into black channels.

In the distance, broken towers rose from the earth like the bones of an ancient civilization.

The sky was covered by dark clouds.

No birds flew.

No insects moved.

Even the wind seemed afraid.

Aren looked around.

"This is supposed to be the world you created?"

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

"It looks terrible."

"It wasn't like this before."

Lyra stepped beside him.

"How long has it been abandoned?"

Kael shook his head.

"I don't know."

Seraphine crouched beside a dead plant.

"This world isn't simply dead."

Kael looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

She touched the soil.

"It's still trying to recover."

"From what?"

"Whatever destroyed it."

Kael looked toward the horizon.

"The end of the first cycle."

A loud crack echoed through the forest.

Everyone immediately turned.

A tree had fallen.

But there was no wind.

Aren drew his sword.

"Something's here."

Kael nodded.

"I know."

The ground beneath them moved.

Roots burst through the soil.

Lyra raised her staff.

"Incoming!"

A creature erupted from beneath the earth.

It had the body of a wolf but was larger than a horse. Black roots covered its body, wrapping around its limbs like armor. Its mouth opened unnaturally wide, revealing rows of crystalline teeth.

Aren charged before it could attack.

His sword collided with its claws.

The impact sent a shockwave through the clearing.

Aren slid backward.

"Strong!"

The creature lunged again.

Lyra's staff flashed.

A wall of fire erupted between them.

The creature crashed through it.

Seraphine immediately shouted.

"Don't use fire!"

Lyra jumped aside as the creature's claws swept through the flames.

"Why?"

"The roots are feeding on it!"

The black roots around the creature brightened.

Lyra's expression changed.

"You're kidding."

"No."

Kael moved.

His sword cut through the creature's front leg.

Black blood sprayed across the ground.

The creature screamed.

Aren struck from the other side.

His blade severed another limb.

The beast collapsed.

But the roots around its body began moving independently.

Kael stepped back.

"Everyone away."

The corpse exploded.

A wave of black roots shot across the clearing.

Kael raised his hand.

A barrier formed.

The roots slammed against it.

The barrier cracked.

Kael gritted his teeth.

"Everyone, attack the roots!"

Lyra changed her spell.

Instead of fire, she created a freezing wave.

Ice spread across the ground, locking the roots in place.

Aren charged.

His sword flashed repeatedly.

One root.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Seraphine began casting a complex spell beside him.

"Kael!"

He looked toward her.

"I need three seconds!"

"You have two!"

"Then give me three!"

Kael smiled despite himself.

"Fine."

He stepped forward.

The roots surged toward him.

Kael swung his sword.

The first wave split.

Another came.

He twisted aside.

A root scraped his shoulder.

Pain flashed through him.

He ignored it.

Another struck.

He caught it with his free hand.

The black energy immediately began crawling up his arm.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The ninth branch on his palm glowed.

The corruption stopped.

Then began retreating.

Kael pulled.

The root came with him.

He slammed it into the ground.

"Now!"

Seraphine released her spell.

A massive geometric formation appeared beneath the creature.

The entire clearing illuminated.

The remaining roots froze.

Aren delivered the final strike.

The creature shattered.

Silence returned.

Lyra lowered her staff.

"That thing was guarding something."

Kael looked toward the remains.

"Yes."

Selene walked closer.

"How do you know?"

"Because it attacked us only after we reached this place."

Mira pointed toward the ground.

"There."

A small object was buried beneath the creature.

Kael crouched.

He dug through the soil.

His fingers touched metal.

He pulled it out.

A small silver pendant.

Kael froze.

Elara's symbol was engraved on it.

Aren looked at him.

"That's hers."

Kael nodded.

He held the pendant tightly.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then he heard a voice.

"You're looking in the wrong place."

Kael immediately turned.

Nothing.

"Who said that?"

Everyone looked around.

Caelum's eyes turned silver.

"I heard it."

Lyra raised her staff.

"Where?"

Caelum pointed toward the ruined towers.

"There."

A figure stood between the ruins.

A young woman.

Long silver hair.

Dark clothing.

A sword at her waist.

She looked at Kael from a distance.

Then she disappeared.

Aren immediately chased after her.

"Wait!"

Kael followed.

The others moved behind them.

They entered the ruins.

Broken buildings surrounded them.

Ancient statues stood along the streets, their faces destroyed.

Kael recognized some of them.

They were statues of the first civilization.

His civilization.

The people he had created.

The ones who had lived before the cycle.

Aren stopped.

"Kael."

Kael approached.

Aren pointed toward one of the statues.

It depicted a man standing beside a woman.

The man's face had been destroyed.

The woman's face remained.

Kael's breath caught.

It was Elara.

"She was here."

Kael touched the statue.

A faint memory appeared.

Elara standing in the same place.

Laughing.

Talking with the people.

Teaching children.

Then another memory.

Elara crying.

Then another.

Elara standing before the World Tree.

Then another.

Elara placing a hand against the tree.

Kael pulled his hand away.

"She didn't disappear."

Selene looked at him.

"What?"

"She was part of the first world."

"Yes."

"But not as a normal person."

Seraphine understood.

"She was part of the system."

Kael nodded.

"She helped create the cycle."

Mira looked toward the statue.

"Then why did she disappear now?"

Kael stared at the broken statue.

"Because she was never supposed to survive the end."

A voice came from behind them.

"Correct."

Everyone turned.

The silver-haired woman stood at the entrance to the ruins.

Her hand rested on her sword.

Kael stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

She looked at him.

"You don't remember me."

"Should I?"

"Yes."

She drew her sword.

Aren immediately raised his.

"Kael."

Kael lifted a hand.

"Wait."

The woman stared at him.

"You look just like him."

"Who?"

"Elion."

Kael's expression hardened.

"How do you know that name?"

She smiled.

"Because I killed him."

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Aren stepped forward.

"You what?"

The woman raised her sword.

"He asked me to."

Kael stared.

"What?"

"He knew the cycle wouldn't begin unless he died."

She pointed the sword at Kael.

"So I killed him."

Kael's grip tightened.

"You killed me."

"Your first self."

"Why?"

"Because you asked."

Kael took a step forward.

"Where is Elara?"

The woman's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked sad.

"She's where she always was."

"Where?"

"At the end of the road."

Kael remembered Caelum's vision.

A road with no end.

"How do I reach her?"

The woman lowered her sword.

"You don't."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Then why are you here?"

"To stop you from trying."

"Why?"

"Because the last time you reached the end..."

She looked toward the dead sky.

"...you destroyed everything."

Kael stood silently.

The woman continued.

"You think you're trying to save Elara."

"But you're actually trying to restore the person you used to be."

Kael shook his head.

"No."

"Then prove it."

She raised her sword again.

"Fight me."

Aren stepped beside Kael.

"We'll fight together."

The woman shook her head.

"No."

Her eyes remained fixed on Kael.

"This battle belongs to him."

Kael looked at his companions.

Then at the woman.

He slowly drew his sword.

"Fine."

Lyra stepped forward.

"Kael—"

"I'll handle this."

The woman smiled.

"That's the answer I was waiting for."

She vanished.

Kael barely blocked the first strike.

The impact sent him flying through a stone wall.

He rolled across the ground and immediately stood.

The woman was already behind him.

He turned.

Their swords collided.

The sound echoed through the ruins.

She was fast.

Too fast.

Kael blocked three strikes.

The fourth cut across his side.

Blood stained his clothes.

He stepped backward.

The woman didn't give him time.

Another attack.

Another.

Another.

Kael parried.

She changed direction.

Her blade came toward his neck.

Kael bent backward.

The sword passed over his face.

He kicked her away.

She landed gracefully.

"You're stronger than before."

Kael wiped the blood from his cheek.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Seris."

"Seris."

"You don't remember."

"No."

"Then I'll make you remember."

She charged.

Their swords collided again.

This time Kael attacked.

One strike.

Two.

Three.

Seris blocked them all.

She countered.

Kael moved aside.

Her sword cut through a pillar.

Stone exploded.

Kael used the opening.

His blade stopped at her throat.

Seris froze.

Kael didn't strike.

"Where is Elara?"

Seris smiled.

"That's why you'll never become Elion again."

Kael lowered his sword.

"What?"

"You had the chance to kill me."

"But you didn't."

"That's the difference."

Seris stepped backward.

"Elion would have killed me."

"Kael won't."

Kael stared.

"Then tell me."

Seris looked toward the horizon.

"The road begins beneath the first World Tree."

Kael followed her gaze.

"But the road has already started moving."

"What does that mean?"

"The end is coming toward you."

Kael's expression changed.

"The end?"

Seris nodded.

"Not the end of your life."

"The end of the cycle."

She looked toward the sky.

A faint crack had appeared above the ruins.

Beyond it...

The eleventh light was visible.

But this time it was not alone.

Something stood beside it.

A silhouette.

Kael recognized the shape.

Aster.

Seris whispered,

"He's coming."

Kael tightened his grip on his sword.

"For me?"

Seris shook her head.

"No."

She looked directly at him.

"For all of us."

The crack widened.

The dead world began shaking.

And beneath their feet...

Something enormous started waking up.

Kael looked down.

The ground split open.

A massive root rose from the earth.

At its center was a glowing door.

A door that hadn't existed before.

A door with no number.

No symbol.

Only a single word.

ELARA.

Kael stared at it.

His heart pounded.

Seris stepped backward.

"The road has chosen."

Kael approached the door.

Behind him, his companions gathered.

Aren raised his sword.

Lyra prepared her magic.

Selene opened her book.

Seraphine began calculating.

Caelum looked toward the impossible future.

Mira gathered the memories.

Rowan gripped his weapon.

Kael placed his hand against the door.

The word ELARA began glowing.

A voice came from beyond it.

Soft.

Familiar.

"Kael."

His eyes widened.

It was her.

Elara.

"I'm here."

Kael closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he smiled.

"I'm coming."

The door opened.

And beyond it was not another world.

It was a road stretching into endless darkness.

A road with no beginning.

A road with no end.

And somewhere far ahead...

Elara was waiting.
