Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Unyielding Will

The faint golden light seeping out of the stone chamber flickered nonstop, but it never got snuffed out by the strange black energy of the hooded invaders. Instead, it hung on like a stubborn spark of hope, clinging to its last bit of strength no matter what. Chen Fan gritted his teeth through the searing pain tearing through his whole body and slowly propped himself up on the stone bed. His brutal fight with the Demon Emperor had used up every last drop of his spiritual power and chaotic energy—his meridians were dry and cracked, his limbs felt as heavy as lead, and every small movement sent sharp pain shooting through him. But there wasn't a single hint of despair in his eyes, only a burning, unshakable resolve that only grew stronger.

He forced his fingers to twitch, pouring every bit of his willpower into reaching for the dormant Chaos Root in his dantian, ignoring the agony all over his body. He could hear the chaos loud and clear outside—the shouts of the sect's disciples, the strained yells of the elders pushing through their pain, and the cold, arrogant tones of the black-robed intruders. But he refused to just lie there helpless. These people had risked their lives to protect him, and he wasn't about to let their bravery go to waste. Even if he was weak and exhausted right now, he was going to fight back, and he wasn't going to let these villains get their way.

"Hold the line, everyone! Don't back down even an inch! Young Hero Chen isn't out yet, and neither is our Azure Cloud Sect!" The sect leader's roar cut through the noise, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He stumbled to his feet, leaning on his spiritual sword to stay upright, his body covered in wounds and his robes soaked in blood. But he stood tall, his back straight, and he didn't show a single sign of backing down.

"Sect Leader, we're almost out of spiritual power, but we'll hold this line with our lives—we'll protect Young Hero Chen!" an elder shouted back, lifting his sword again. His face was covered in dust and blood, but his gaze was as firm as ever. The remaining disciples were shaking with fear, but they huddled close together, gripping their weapons tight—not a single one ran or surrendered. They'd just survived the Demon Emperor's reign of terror, and they weren't going to let these random new enemies break their spirit.

One of the black-robed invaders lunged straight at a young disciple, cold black energy coiling around his fist. But the kid didn't flinch at all. He raised his spiritual tool and yelled as loud as he could, "I'll protect my sect! I'm not running!" The elder next to him quickly stepped in to shield the boy, taking the hit head-on. He grunted in pain but still mustered up his last burst of strength to push the invader back.

"Stick together! We're from Azure Cloud Sect—we don't give up, even if it kills us!" the elder yelled, rallying everyone around him. A wave of unbreakable fighting spirit washed over the remaining cultivators. They formed small teams, covering each other's backs and fighting back with every bit of strength they had left. Their unified shouts of resistance echoed all across the ruins.

The lead black-robed figure hovered in the air, his cold golden eyes narrowing a little as he stared at their stubborn fight. "Foolish mortals. You can't beat us, so why waste your energy on a lost cause?" he said coldly, his voice carrying over all the chaos.

"Because we protect the people we care about and what's right!" the sect leader shouted up at him, his gaze sharp and unyielding. "We'll never hand over the savior of the cultivation world to villains like you! Power isn't everything—an unbreakable will is always stronger than mindless cruelty!"

The black-robed leader let out a cold scoff and waved his hand to order his men forward. "Crush their resistance. Bring me the kid with the Chaos Root, and don't hurt his body." The four black-robed figures surged forward at once, thick black energy rolling toward the cultivators. But the Azure Cloud Sect members held their ground tight. Even as they got pushed back, their resolve never cracked.

Inside the stone chamber, Chen Fan felt the warmth of the sect's loyalty and solidarity, and it chased away some of his exhaustion and pain. He took a shaky deep breath, closed his eyes, and focused all his thoughts on the dormant Chaos Root. "Wake up. I have to wake up. I need to protect them. I can't quit," he whispered to himself, his voice steady and firm.

At first, the Chaos Root stayed still and weak, not responding at all. But Chen Fan didn't give up, not even for a second. He poured all his stubborn will, all his gratitude to the sect, and all his drive to protect the innocent into calling out to the ancient power inside him. He refused to give in to tiredness, refused to let pain stop him, and refused to back down from a stronger enemy. He just kept pushing forward, holding onto his hope.

"Keep struggling—it'll just make this more fun for us. Your friends are dropping one by one, and you can't do a thing but lie there helpless. Your so-called will is just empty words," the black-robed leader's voice drifted into the chamber, cold and mocking, taunting Chen Fan without mercy.

Chen Fan's eyes snapped open instantly. He still looked worn out, but there was a bright, unyielding fire burning in his gaze. He spoke slowly, his voice quiet but clear and firm, carrying loud enough for the invaders outside to hear. "A real will isn't empty words. I might be weak right now, but I'll never stop fighting. You risked your lives to protect me, and I'll do everything I can to keep you all safe."

The second his words landed, the Chaos Root in his dantian finally stirred. A soft, warm golden light slowly spread through his arms and legs. It didn't burst into earth-shattering power, but it brought a steady, growing strength that gently eased his exhaustion and dulled the pain in his meridians. Using this small spark of energy, he slowly sat up straight, formed a cultivation seal with his hands, and guided the faint waking chaotic power inside him, gathering it bit by bit.

Outside, the sect leader caught sight of the brightening golden light coming from the chamber. A tired but bright smile spread across his bloodstained face, and he yelled at the top of his lungs, "Young Hero Chen is awake! Just hold on a little longer, everyone—we're fighting alongside him!" That shout ignited everyone's fighting spirit right away. The remaining cultivators cheered, their fear melting away into hope, and strength flooded back into their bodies. The elders fought back harder, the disciples steadied their formation, and courage blazed in their hearts again.

The black-robed invaders all froze, caught off guard by the sudden surge in the cultivators' morale. The lead invader's golden eyes flashed with surprise and annoyance, muttering under his breath, "Impossible. He's completely drained of spiritual power—there's no way he can wake up again."

Chen Fan paid no mind to the black-robed leader's disbelieving words. He just kept focusing on gathering his strength, his resolve shining brighter in his eyes. He knew that as long as he held onto hope and refused to quit, he could break through this mess and protect everyone he cared about. This unyielding will was his strongest weapon against powerful enemies—and it was the reason Azure Cloud Sect would never stay down.
