Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: Pursuit’s End, Barrier’s Stand.

The wind sliced through Chen Fan's robes as he and the elite alliance team soared through the sky, the second Chaos Shard clutched tightly in his palm, its faint corrupted hum mixing with the thrumming of the amplified chaotic light in his dantian. Behind them, the invader master's furious roars echoed across the misty mountains, his dark aura flaring like a black wildfire as he gave chase, unwilling to let the shard slip from his grasp a second time.

The master's shadow soldiers surged forward in a relentless wave, their forms blurring through the air as they darted ahead of their leader, launching barrages of dark energy spikes toward the retreating team. The projectiles whistled past, slamming into the mountain peaks below and shattering stone into dust, each strike carrying the brutal force of the abyss.

"Hold formation!" Chen Fan shouted over his shoulder, his voice cutting through the howl of the wind. The elite team tightened their ranks, forming a tight defensive diamond around him, their spiritual weapons raised and ready. They weaved through the air in perfect sync, dodging the dark attacks with practiced precision, their years of alliance training making their movements seamless.

A Flying Sword Sect disciple unleashed a volley of glowing spiritual blades, slicing through a dozen shadow soldiers in an instant, their forms dissolving into wisps of black smoke. A Flowing Water Clan healer wove a barrier of soft blue light, shielding the team from a surprise wave of corrosive abyss energy, the glow holding strong against the dark corruption.

The scar-faced elder, flying at the rear of the formation, slammed his spiritual axe into the oncoming horde of shadow soldiers, sending a shockwave of golden energy rippling outward. The blast cleared a massive path through the enemy ranks, buying the team precious time to put more distance between themselves and the enraged master. "Keep moving!" he bellowed, his gruff voice booming across the sky. "Don't let his numbers slow you down!"

Chen Fan risked a glance backward, his jaw tightening at the sight of the invader master closing in. The Crown of the Abyss blazed with unbridled fury atop his head, its dark energy warping the air around him, boosting his speed to terrifying levels. His golden eyes were fixed solely on the Chaos Shard in Chen Fan's hand, hatred and greed burning in their depths.

"You cannot escape me!" the master snarled, his voice laced with venom as he unleashed a massive beam of pure abyss energy, the dark blast tearing through the sky toward the team. "Hand over the shard, or I will reduce every last one of you to ash!"

Chen Fan acted without hesitation, spinning in the air and thrusting his palms forward. The amplified chaotic light erupted from his body, forming a massive, glowing golden shield that blocked the dark beam head-on. The two forces collided with a deafening crash, sending shockwaves rolling outward and shaking the entire mountain range. The chaotic light held firm, its balanced power grinding the corruptive abyss energy to nothing, but the force of the impact sent Chen Fan stumbling backward, his arms trembling with the effort.

"He's too fast—we can't outrun him all the way back to the stronghold!" the Azure Cloud Sect elder accompanying the team shouted, his voice tight with urgency. "We need to make a stand, or he'll catch us before we cross the alliance's outer defense line!"

Chen Fan's mind raced, scanning the landscape below for any advantage. His gaze landed on a narrow, winding valley nestled between two towering, jagged peaks, its entrance flanked by ancient stone pillars covered in faded runes. The pillars hummed with a faint, dormant spiritual energy—old, unclaimed barrier runes, left behind by the ancient cultivators who had once guarded this land.

That was their chance.

"Down there!" Chen Fan yelled, pointing toward the valley. "We'll set a defensive barrier at the valley mouth—those ancient runes can be amplified with chaotic light. It'll bottleneck his forces and buy us enough time to gain the upper hand!"

The team didn't hesitate, veering downward and diving into the valley at top speed. The invader master saw the move and let out a triumphant sneer, assuming they were cornered, and surged after them, his shadow soldiers pouring into the valley behind him like a tidal wave of darkness.

As soon as they reached the valley's narrow entrance, Chen Fan landed and pressed his palm to one of the ancient stone pillars. The chaotic light flowed from his body into the faded runes, igniting them in a brilliant golden glow. The runes flared to life, snaking across the pillars and spreading along the mountain ridges, weaving a massive, impenetrable barrier that sealed off the valley entrance completely.

The other alliance elders and disciples quickly joined in, channeling their own spiritual energy into the barrier, reinforcing it until it shone like a wall of pure sunlight. The invader master and his shadow soldiers slammed into the barrier an instant later, the dark force of their charge bouncing off the golden glow with a violent, ear-splitting crack.

The shadow soldiers at the front of the horde were incinerated on the spot, their forms dissolving into nothingness under the chaotic light's purifying power. The master himself was thrown backward, snarling in rage as he stabilized himself in the air, his crown flaring in a futile attempt to break through the barrier.

"Your petty light won't hold me back!" he roared, slamming his fist against the golden wall again and again. Each strike sent cracks spiderwebbing across the barrier's surface, the abyss energy eating away at the edges, but the alliance team poured more energy into the runes, mending the damage faster than he could break it.

Chen Fan stood at the center of the barrier, his eyes locked on the master, his expression calm and unyielding. "This barrier is fueled by our unity, not just my light," he said, his voice clear and steady, carrying through the barrier to reach the master's ears. "You can't break what we've built together. Every Chaos Shard you chase, every attack you launch—we'll be there to stop you. You will never claim the power you seek."

The master's face twisted with unbridled rage, his eyes burning with a hatred so fierce it seemed to tangible. He raised both hands, summoning every last shadow soldier under his command, amassing them into a massive, swirling horde behind him. The Crown of the Abyss reached its peak power, dark energy pooling in the sky above the valley, forming a massive, swirling vortex of destruction.

"You think this little barrier is enough to defeat me?" he shrieked, the vortex above him crackling with destructive power. "I will shatter your wall, kill your allies, and take that shard by force. When I'm done, this valley will be your grave!"

The alliance team tensed, their hands still pressed to the barrier, their spiritual energy flaring brighter. They were exhausted from the chase and the fierce battle in the ancient temple, but their resolve did not waver. They stood shoulder to shoulder, united, their trust in one another and in Chen Fan unshakable.

Chen Fan's grip on the Chaos Shard tightened, the purified light from the first shard humming in harmony with the chaotic light, ready to unleash its full power. He stared down the enraged master, his gaze steady, knowing that the next moments would decide whether they escaped with the shard or fell to the dark onslaught.

The barrier held, for now, but the master's full-force attack was imminent—and this time, he would hold nothing back.
