Chapter 10 - The Love That’s Stayed

Kieran left three days later.

No announcements.

No goodbyes.

No last messages.

Just… gone.

And just like that, everything returned to normal.

Or at least…

That's how it looked on the outside.

Classes continued.

Students laughed.

Life moved on like nothing had happened.

But for Amara…

Something had changed.

Not in a loud or obvious way.

But quietly.

Deeply.

She still woke up early.

Still attended her lectures.

Still sat in the same places.

But now…

There was an emptiness she couldn't ignore.

Not because she needed him.

But because she had gotten used to him.

And losing something you got used to?

That always leaves a mark.

Sometimes, she caught herself thinking about him.

Random moments.

Unexpected memories.

The way he would sit beside her without asking.

The way he noticed the smallest things.

The way he said her name like it meant something.

And strangely…

She didn't try to forget.

Because despite everything…

She didn't regret it.

Not the conversations.

Not the feelings.

Not even the ending.

Because for the first time in her life…

She had felt something real.

And real things, even when they don't last…

Still matter.

Weeks passed.

Then months.

Slowly, the memories became softer.

Less painful.

More… distant.

Not gone.

Just… quieter.

"You've changed," Tessa said one afternoon as they walked back to their hostel.

Amara looked at her.

"How?"

"You're still the same," Tessa said. "But… softer. Like you understand things more now."

Amara smiled slightly.

"Maybe I do."

Because love—even the kind that doesn't last—teaches you something.

It teaches you how to feel.

How to care.

How to let go.

And Amara had learned all of that.

One evening, as she sat alone in the campus garden, she looked up at the sky.

The same place she used to sit before everything began.

The air was calm.

Peaceful.

And for once…

Her heart felt the same.

She wasn't waiting anymore.

Not for him.

Not for anything.

Just… living.

But somewhere, deep inside her…

A small part of him remained.

Not as pain.

Not as regret.

But as a memory.

A quiet reminder that once, she had met someone who felt perfect…

Even if he was wrong for her.

And maybe…

That was enough.

Far away, in a different city, Kieran stood by a window, staring out at a view that didn't feel like home.

Everything was new.

Different.

But something was missing.

He exhaled slowly, his mind drifting back to the past.

To her.

To the only person who ever saw him without the mask.

And stayed.

"Amara…" he whispered softly.

For the first time…

He allowed himself to feel it fully.

The loss.

Because walking away had been easy before.

But this time…

It wasn't.

And maybe it never would be.

Because some people don't stay in your life…

But they stay in your heart.
