Chapter 19 - The choice that wasn’t isn’t easy

Things didn't go back to normal.

But they didn't fall apart either.

Instead…

They stayed in between.

And somehow, that felt harder.

Amara noticed it first.

The way Kieran kept his word.

No pressure.

No sudden appearances.

No forcing conversations.

Just… quiet presence.

Sometimes she'd see him across campus.

He wouldn't approach.

Wouldn't interrupt.

But he was there.

And for some reason…

That mattered.

At the same time—

Daniel didn't disappear either.

If anything, he became more present.

"Are you free later?" he asked one afternoon as they packed their books.

Amara hesitated.

Not because she didn't want to go.

But because her mind immediately went somewhere else.

To someone else.

Kieran.

She hated that.

"I'm not sure," she replied.

Daniel smiled gently.

"That's okay. Think about it."

No pressure.

No expectations.

Just ease.

And that made everything more confusing.

Because with Daniel…

Things were simple.

But with Kieran?

Nothing had ever been simple.

Later that evening, Amara sat alone again, her thoughts louder than usual.

"What do you actually want?" she whispered to herself.

Not what felt safe.

Not what made sense.

But what she truly wanted.

And the answer?

It scared her.

Because no matter how much she tried to deny it…

Her heart still leaned toward Kieran.

Not fully.

Not blindly.

But enough.

The next day, she found him sitting alone.

For once…

She was the one who walked toward him.

Kieran looked up, surprised.

"Amara."

She stood in front of him, calm—but not distant.

"We need to talk," she said.

He nodded immediately.

"I know I said I needed time," she began.

"And I meant that."

"I understand," he replied.

"But I also need to be honest," she continued.

Kieran stayed quiet.

Listening.

"I can't pretend I don't feel anything," she said.

Her voice was steady.

But her hands weren't.

"And I can't pretend what we had didn't matter."

Something shifted in his expression.

"But that doesn't mean everything is okay now," she added quickly.

"I know."

"You hurt me," she said.

"I know."

"And if I let you back in…"

She paused.

"It won't be like before."

Kieran leaned forward slightly.

"I don't want it to be like before."

That caught her off guard.

"I want it to be better," he said.

Silence.

Because that?

That sounded real.

"I'm not asking for promises," she said.

"Good. Because I don't have perfect ones."

A small smile almost escaped her.

Almost.

"But I need honesty," she continued.

"You'll have it."

"I need consistency."

"I'll give you that."

"And I need to know that if this hurts again…"

Her voice softened.

"…it won't be because you chose to leave."

That one hit deeply.

Kieran stood up slowly.

Closing the small distance between them.

"I'm not leaving this time," he said quietly.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just truth.

Amara searched his eyes.

Looking for uncertainty.

For fear.

For anything that would make her step back.

But she didn't find it.

And that scared her.

Because for the first time…

He wasn't the one running.

She was.

And now…

She had to decide if she was ready to stop.
