Chapter 9 - Bab 9: Ultimatum

Morning sunlight streamed through the windows of the Arou residence, warm, yet the air in the living room felt different.

Airi sat on the sofa, her back straight, her face cold, eyes fixed on the distant view outside the window. She held her breath, asserting her own boundaries.

Nova sat on the floor near the sofa, his mischievous smile still lingering, but a subtle tension flickered in his eyes.

"You know, Airi, mornings like this look so much better if you smile a little," he teased, trying to sound casual, yet his tone was soft, layered with meaning.

Airi turned to him, her gaze piercing, her cold voice unwavering:

"Enough, Nova. If you tease me again, I'll leave."

Her words struck like lightning in the morning. Nova's playful smile faded instantly, his eyes softened, and his face held a tinge of sadness.

"…Oh," he said softly, trying to swallow the sudden disappointment. He lowered his gaze briefly, feeling the weight in his chest, realizing Airi was genuinely serious.

Airi returned her gaze to the window, holding her breath.

I have to be firm… I can't let myself be swayed by his teasing, she thought, her heart fluttering but her expression remaining cold.

Nova exhaled deeply, leaning closer to her.

"I'm sorry… I didn't mean to go too far," he said quietly, each word tinged with genuine regret.

He wanted to pat her shoulder, to ease the tension, but feared making a wrong move.

Airi straightened her back slightly, staring out again, forcing herself not to look at Nova for too long.

Silence filled the room. Only the sound of breaths and heartbeat could be heard in the warm living room.

Nova remained quiet, suppressing his disappointment and sadness, his eyes fixed on Airi, trying to read the frozen expression she kept hidden.

She's stubborn… but I have to respect her limits, Nova thought.

The moment stretched, warm morning turning tense.

Between teasing, ultimatums, and the sudden sadness that gripped Nova's heart, something began to shift. What was once lighthearted and playful now felt more serious and emotional.

Airi straightened her back once more, taking a deep breath, calming her racing heart.

I must stay strong… this is my secret, and I won't bow to his teasing, she thought.

Nova looked at her, a faint smile on his lips but his eyes still sorrowful. He knew something had shifted between them that morning.

It wasn't just teasing, it wasn't just a game—it was a moment that would shape how they interacted going forward.

Morning sunlight filled the living room of the Arou residence, warm and bright.

Nova sat on the sofa, a faint smile on his face, but his eyes were heavy with sadness lingering from Airi's ultimatum the day before.

One by one, Arou, Nora, Shion, Rei, and Emi entered the living room. Their eyes immediately noticed the change in Nova's expression.

"Nova… are you okay?" Arou asked cautiously, scrutinizing his friend.

Nora furrowed her brows, staring sharply at him.

"Something seems to be bothering you," she said softly, concern in her voice.

Shion and Rei remained silent, observing carefully, sensing the lingering sorrow around Nova.

Emi stepped closer, her expression calm but full of care, like an older sibling who understood.

"Nova, if something's upsetting you, you can talk. I'll listen," she said gently but firmly.

Nova looked at his friends, giving a small smile to hide his sadness.

"Ah… I'm… fine," he replied softly, trying to sound casual, though a tinge of sorrow lingered.

Arou stepped closer, patting Nova's shoulder lightly.

"If you say you're fine, we'll believe you. But your expression… it's different," Arou said, attentive.

Nora sat beside him, her gaze sharp yet warm.

"If something's bothering you, you can tell us. We won't be angry," she added.

Nova swallowed, looking down at the floor briefly.

"I'm… just a little sad. Nothing to worry about," he replied with a faint smile, trying to ease his friends' concern.

Emi patted Nova's shoulder gently, her eyes full of understanding.

"Feeling sad is natural, Nova. But you're not alone. We're all here for you," she said.

That morning, the living room remained warm, but Nova's heart was tangled with sadness, regret, and a slight relief from the care of his friends.

Sunlight poured through the windows, warm yet tense, filling the living room.

Arou, Shion, Emi, Rei, and Nora now surrounded Airi, faces serious. They were clearly upset, seeing Nova sad earlier that morning.

"Airi… do you realize what you've done to Nova?" Arou asked, firm but worried.

Shion glared at her. "He's sad because of you. You've been too stubborn."

Emi sighed, her tone mature but firm. "Nova is your friend, Airi. You can't just make him sad at will."

Nora added, "You need to care! You can't just act cold all the time."

Rei looked at Airi seriously. "If you keep this up, you'll lose everyone's trust."

Airi met their gaze briefly, her face still cold. Her breathing was steady, but her heart fluttered slightly.

"Fine… then I'll leave," she said firmly, asserting her cold stance while restraining her emotions.

Arou, Emi, Shion, Rei, and Nora exchanged glances, still worried but powerless to stop her.

Nova, sitting on the sofa, looked at Airi with heavy eyes, torn between disappointment and relief that she remained firm yet stayed close.

Airi walked toward the door, steps steady.

That morning felt warm yet tense, the mix of friends' anger, Nova's sadness, and Airi's determination creating a new dynamic.

Footsteps echoed in the Arou residence corridor.

Nora chased after Airi, who had just left the living room with firm yet cold steps.

"Airi! Wait!" Nora called, her voice firm but worried.

Airi paused briefly, turning. Her face remained cold, yet she glanced at Nora for a moment, holding back the feelings rising inside her.

"Why are you chasing me?" Airi asked, her tone flat but slightly weary.

Nora approached, gazing at her intently but gently. "What's going on? You made Nova sad… and I can't just stay silent."

Airi lowered her head briefly, swallowing a long breath.

"…I'm sorry," she said quietly, sincerely, her face still cold, but her shoulders slightly relaxed.

Nora exhaled, patting Airi's shoulder gently. "It's okay. But you need to be more open. Don't shake people's hearts with your attitude."

Airi drew a deep breath, straightening her back. Her face remained cold, but her heart felt a little lighter.

I… have to learn to control myself and care too, she thought.

The corridor felt warm, sunlight streaming through the window, as if giving Airi space to start understanding others' feelings.

Airi stood at the door of the Arou residence, her eyes looking far beyond.

Nora approached, her expression serious, full of concern.

"Airi, don't go! You can't just leave us like this," Nora's voice was firm, almost pleading.

Airi turned briefly, face cold, voice firm. "I'm sorry… but I have to go. I have no other choice."

Nora exhaled, holding back her emotions.

"You're my friend! You can't just leave and make everyone worry, especially Nova!"

Airi lowered her head briefly, restraining the flutter in her chest.

"Yes… I know. But I have to do this. Forgive me," she said shortly.

Nora stepped closer, patting Airi's shoulder slowly, her voice gentle but firm. "I don't agree, but if you insist, I can't stop you. Just… take care of yourself, Airi."

Airi looked at Nora for a moment, her heart heavy, yet her steps remained firm.

Her departure left the morning quiet, warm yet tense.

A brief farewell left a weight in both their hearts—Nora, as a friend who didn't want to lose her, and Airi, as someone determined yet stubborn.

Arou sat on the sofa, face serious, heavy with concern and regret.

"Ah… I regret bringing Airi here," Arou muttered softly, voice full of burden.

Nora looked at him sharply, then sat beside him. "Regret? Are you serious? You know she's stubborn, but that doesn't mean you regret recruiting her."

Arou shook his head, looking down.

"She made Nova sad, and… I feel it's all my fault. I brought her here, and look… now she's gone just like that."

Nora patted Arou's shoulder, tone gentle yet firm.

"You're not wrong. Airi is stubborn, but she has her reasons. All you can do is wait and hope she comes back."

Arou took a long breath, glancing at the window, face heavy.

"Yes… I just hope it doesn't get more complicated. I don't want Nova to be too sad," he said, still thinking about Nova sitting on the sofa near the window earlier.

Nora looked at Arou seriously, voice soft. "You have to stay calm. Focus on what you can control. We can't force Airi, but we can keep Nova and the team strong."

That morning, the house was quiet, warm but heavy, filled with regret, worry, and lingering tension from Airi's departure.
