Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 9

"Thank you, Jerry," the news reporter at the live location of the crime scene spoke.

"I am currently at De Cisasco Bar, where a tragic incident happened yesterday. After interviewing some of the staff, I found out that the fire was caused by an angry customer who scattered drinks all over the bar after not receiving a complete order. Some of the drinks spilled were highly inflammable and leaked into burnable materials like the carpet and curtains. It is still unclear how a source of fire got to the carpet and caused it to start such a huge fire, but detectives are currently working on that. The entire bar was burnt down, including all footage from the previous day's activities, as it had not been saved to the cloud."

"Also, the owner of the bar—Mr Rodney Denorex—has been found dead and burnt in his office, with the letters EG spray-painted in yellow on his burnt body. It was a very tragic sight."

"Over to you, Jerry…"

Nathaniel muted the television as Darryl walked in. Darryl took one look at the headlines and frowned.

"EG," he repeated.

"It was named like that to symbolize power," Nathaniel said.

"How would you know? Did you name it?" Darryl asked.

"I'm just guessing," Nathaniel replied. "Did you come with the report?"

"Yes, I did. I must say, your assistant did a good job at this one."

"Hmm," Nathaniel scoffed. "Only I can determine that."

Darryl handed him the file, and as Nathaniel glanced through another one, Darryl added, "Oh, and someone applied for the job as a maid for Melanie."

"About time. I was considering looking for an agency."

"It's one…" Darryl looked at the paper again. "Miss Riley Knox."

"Get me her information."

---

Riley looked at the trending news about EG. She felt Mrs Miller's warning gaze from wherever she was. She immediately opened her laptop. Mrs Miller was right—crime didn't wait for her to happen. She just needed to be extra careful.

Riley applied for the job as a maid right there and then. It freed her mind from guilt at that moment. As she looked at the scars around her wrists, she remembered that Alan guy who had been speaking to Skylar about EG. If she could get to him, they might actually be able to catch these people. Whatever mission they had been given hadn't been completed yet. Surely that Alan guy was still in touch with EG.

This might just be the breakthrough they had been looking for in the police force.

---

Mrs Miller was drowned in a bit of paperwork concerning the investigation of the incident that happened at the bar. She had finished all interviews and finally got rid of the press. It was very tiring but this was part of her job.

"Ma'am, Miss Riley Knox wants to see you," Titi, her new assistant said from the phone.

"You said Riley Knox?!"

"Yes ma'am"

"Give her a seat, I'm on my way,"

It took Mrs Miller all her willpower to avoid slapping Riley on sight. "Good afternoon Mrs Miller," Riley said, annoyingly cheerful and in total contrast to Mrs Miller's character.

"There is nothing good about this afternoon Miss Knox,"

"Oh but there is. I found a lead on the EG's case,"

"You're not supposed to be here," She sighed "What did you find?"

"I've not made a full research, but I found someone who is in a gang connected to a crime organized by EG. His name is Alan Becker," She had gotten his full name from Skylar. Riley handed to Mrs Miller a paper containing the researches she made of Alan Becker.

Mrs Miller angrily collected it and questioned, "So that's why you came here? Do you know that you are jeopardizing the entire mission now? What if a staff at where you're working spots you?"

"I made sure I wasn't being followed, and I thought the EG's case was very important to the police force so I came with the information I got,"

"We would have gotten the information one way or the other Miss Knox. Have you made the application?"

"Yes ma'am"

"Don't blow it"

Riley stood up when she saw Mrs Miller leaving, they were still in the corridor where visitors waited "Mrs Miller," She turned when she heard her name, "I thought that there was supposed to be an undercover team readily listening to my walkie-talkie report and making sure that my cover is not blown. So that the mission would be successful,"

"Well, there is an undercover team," Mrs Miller lied and began to walk away "You just haven't met them yet,"

"Can I meet them?"

"No," Mrs Miller walked back into her office, leaving behind a stunned Riley.

Deep down Riley knew that there were many things about this mission that was not right, starting from why she was chosen. Her trust for Mrs Miller had faded a bit, but she remembered Mr Henderson and Mr Zachary. Surely, they wouldn't let Mrs Miller scatter the job with her decisions. They had a hand in his mission too, right?

There was nothing to worry about. Maybe they're part of the undercover team she hasn't met.

---

When Riley got back home, she received a notification on her PC. She was to appear for an interview at a particular place, for the position of a maid which she applied for. She looked at the location of the place, entry code, and lastly, the interviewer's name.

She glanced at the screen back again to confirm if the interviewer's name was what she thought it was– Mr Nathaniel Marcello D'Oro.

Maybe he wouldn't remember her face from the bar. How was she so stupid to have done such an embarrassing act when she was going to meet him later in the future?
