Chapter 28 - CHAPTER 28 — Almost

There was no space left.

None.

Elena felt it the moment he pulled her closer.

Too close.

Too real.

Her heart slammed against her chest.

Fast.

Unsteady.

This wasn't tension anymore.

This was something else.

Something neither of them could control.

His hand stayed at her waist.

Firm.

Not forcing.

Not gentle.

Just… holding.

Her breath slowed.

Then quickened again.

"You said you wouldn't stop," she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"I didn't."

Her chest tightened.

"Then why does it feel like you still are?"

Silence.

His gaze dropped.

To her lips.

Then back to her eyes.

"That's not stopping," he said quietly.

Her breath caught.

She didn't step back.

That was the problem.

Her hand lifted.

Slow.

Careful.

Rested lightly against his chest.

Everything stilled.

His breath changed.

Just slightly.

That touch—

Changed everything.

His hand tightened.

Not enough to hurt.

Enough to feel.

"Elena…"

Her name.

Low.

Different.

She swallowed.

Her voice softer now.

"Don't stop."

That was it.

The moment.

His control broke.

Just enough.

He leaned closer.

Her breath stopped.

Everything else disappeared.

No contract.

No danger.

No past.

Just this.

Just him.

And then—

It almost happened.

His hand moved—

From her waist—

Up.

Slow.

Careful.

Her heart raced.

She didn't stop him.

Didn't move.

Didn't think.

This was it.

And she wanted it.

His fingers brushed her jaw again.

But this time—

They didn't stop.

They stayed.

His thumb moved slightly.

Her breath caught.

Everything felt too intense.

Too close.

Too real.

His face moved closer.

Too close.

Her eyes closed—

Just for a second—

And then—

He stopped.

Everything stopped.

Her eyes opened.

"What are you doing?" she whispered.

His breath was uneven now.

For the first time.

"This is a mistake."

Her chest tightened.

"You said that before."

"I meant it."

Silence.

He stepped back.

Fast.

Too fast.

Distance again.

Cold.

Sharp.

That hurt more than it should.

She stared at him.

"You always do that."

A pause.

"Do what?"

"You get close…"

Her voice broke slightly.

"…then you pull away."

Silence.

That landed.

Hard.

He looked at her.

Really looked.

And for a moment—

He didn't look controlled.

"You think that's easy?" he said quietly.

Her breath caught.

"It looks easy."

A pause.

Then—

"It's not."

Silence.

His jaw tightened.

"I don't stop because I want to."

Her heart skipped.

"I stop because I have to."

That changed everything.

Her chest tightened.

"You always 'have to,'" she whispered.

A beat.

Then—

"Yes."

Silence.

She stepped closer.

Again.

Even after everything.

"Then don't," she said softly.

That was dangerous.

Too dangerous.

His eyes darkened.

"That's not your decision."

"No," she said.

A step closer.

"But it affects me."

Silence.

That was new.

That mattered.

He didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Just watched her.

And for the first time…

He hesitated again.

That was worse than anything.

Because now—

She knew.

He wanted this.

Just as much as she did.

And he was the only one stopping it.
