Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: A Moment He Shouldn’t Want

The moment Lyra touched him-

Everything changed

The pain didn't disappear.

But it softened.

Like a storm suddenly quieting, not gone... just heid back.

Kael exhaled slowly, his shoulders dropping as the burning in his veins eased just enough for him to think again.

Lyra didn't move

Her hand remained on his arm, steady, careful,

"...This should be enough," she said quietly.

But her voice lacked certainty.

Because she could feel it too.

Something else was rising.

Kael's breathing slowed.

Then deepened.

His head lowered slightly, closer to her-drawn not by intention, but by instinct.

Lyra frowned.

"...Kael?"

No answer.

Then-

He moved closer,

Not suddenly.

Not forcefully.

But slowly

Like he didn't even realize he was doing it.

His hand found her wrist, not gripping-just holding.

Grounding himself.

Lyra's breath caught.

"Stay still," he murmured.

His voice was softer than she had ever heard it.

Rough.

Low

But not cold.

Lyra should've pulled away.

She knew that.

But she didn't.

Because for the first time-

He didn't feel distant.

He didn't feel untouchable He felt... real..

Kael leaned in slightly, his forehead almost brushing hers before shifting-his breath warm against her neck.

He inhaled slowly.

Like her presence alone was steadying him.

Lyra's fingers tightened just a little against his sleeve.

"...This is just the bond," she said, quieter now, More to herself.

But Kael didn't answer.

Because even he knew-

It didn't feel like just the band.

His head lowered further.

And this time-

His lips brushed against her neck.

Soft

Barely there.

Like he was testing the moment.

Lyra flinched.

A small, sharp inhale escaping her-

But she didn't pull away.

Didn't stop him.

Because the touch-

Wasn't harsh.

Wasn't demanding.

It was...

Careful

Kael paused.

As if waiting.

As if giving her time to push him away.

But when she didn't-

His hold tightened slightly.

Not forceful.

Just enough to keep her close

He pressed another soft kiss against her neck.

Slower this time.

Warmer

And Lyra's grip on his sleeve tightened

unconsciously

Her heart-

Beating faster now.

Too fast.

"Kael-"

His name came out softer than she intended.

He stilled again.

Just for a second.

Then-

His hand moved slightly, brushing against her

arm, pulling her just a little closer.

Like he didn't want to let go yet.

The air between them shifted.

No anger.

No sharp words

Just tension.

Quiet

Heavy.

Kael lifted his head slowly

His gaze finally meeting hers

For the first time-

There was no coldness in it.

Just something deeper.

Something restrained.

Lyra didn't look away.

Didn't move

Didn't stop him.

Even when he leaned in-

Closer

Closer

Close enough that she could feel his breath.

Close enough that the distance between them almost disappeared.

For a second-

She let it happen.

Then-

Kael stopped.

His expression shifted instantly

Like reality came crashing back.

Like he remembered who she was.

What she had said.

What she felt about him.

His jaw tightened.

And he pulled back.

Fast.

The warmth vanished.

Replaced by distance.

Sharp.

Cold. Safe.

Lyra blinked, her breath uneven.

"...Why did you stop?"

The question slipped out before she could stop it.

Kael looked away immediately.

His hand curling slightly at his side.

'...You wouldn't want that."

His voice was back to normal.

Controlled.

But quieter.

Lyra's fingers tightened slightly.

"...You don't know that."

A pause.

Kael's expression hardened.

Not cold-

But guarded.

Like he was forcing the walls back up.

"I do."

Silence filled the space between them.

Thick.

Unspoken.

Kael took another step back.

Creating distance again.

Like he needed it.

"...This won't happen again," he said.

More to himself than to her.

Lyra didn't respond.

Because part of her-

Wasn't sure she wanted that.
