By the time evening arrived-Neither of them realized how much time had passed.
The sun had dipped low, painting the sky in soft shades of gold and amber before slowly fading into deeper hues of violet and blue.
The kingdom changed with the light.
But not into something darker-
Only softer.
Lanterns began to glow along the streets, their warm light reflecting gently against the stone paths as the quiet daytime calm transformed into something livelier.
Not chaotic.
Not overwhelming.
Just... alive.
Lyra had never experienced anything like it.
The marketplace they had passed earlier was now filled with music, laughter, and the faint scent of food drifting through the air.
Children ran past them, their laughter light and unrestrained, while small groups gathered
around performers and vendors.
There was no fear
No tension.
Just joy
"This place doesn't get tired, does it?" Lyra murmured, her gaze moving from one scene to another, almost as if she didn't want to miss anything.
Beside her, Kael watched her-not the crowd. "No," he said quietly. "It doesn't."
Lyra didn't notice the way his gaze lingered.
But David did.
Of course he did.
"Careful," he muttered under his breath, nudging Kael slightly. "You're starting to look like you enjoy this."
Kael didn't even look at him.
"I don't."
David smirked.
"Sure"
Ahead of them, Elira paused near a row of food
stalls, glancing back.
"You should try something she suggested. "This is one of the most popular places in the kingdom.
Lyra hesitated for only a second before stepping closer,
"..It smells good."
David followed immediately.
"Then we absolutely have to."
What followed-
Was something none of them expected.
They didn't rush.
Didn't move from place to place like visitors trying to see everything at once.
Instead-
They stayed.
Tried things slowly..
Talked.
Laughed.
Lyra found herself tasting food she had never tried before, her reactions subtle but genuine.
David exaggerated his own, earning a quiet laugh from Elira that he seemed entirely too proud of.
"...That wasn't even that funny," Elira said,
shaking her head slightly.
"It made you laugh," David replied smoothly.
"That doesn't mean it was funny."
"It means I'm effective."
Lyra almost laughed again.
And this time-
She didn't stop herself
The sound surprised even her.
Light.
Unrestrained.
Real
Kael heard it.
Of course he did.
His gaze shifted toward her instantly.
And for a moment-
He didn't look away.
Because she wasn't quarded.
Wasn't distant
Wasn't fighting.
She was just-
Laughing.
And something about that-
Stayed with him,
Later-
They walked through quieter streets, the noise of the marketplace fading into the background as the night deepened.
"...You didn't hate today, Kael said suddenly.
Lyra glanced at him.
"...That sounds like an accusation."
"It's an observation."
Lyra tilted her head slightly.
"..Then you're not wrong."
Kael nodded once.
"Good."
That was all he said.
But it was enough.
As they turned a corner-
The sky suddenly lit up.
A sharp burst of light-
Followed by a soft explosion of color.
Lyra froze.
Her eyes widening slightly as another firework followed, blooming across the dark sky in shades
of gold and crimson
...What is that?"
Elira smiled.
"Fireworks. They do this sometimes."
Another burst followed. Then another.
Lyra stepped forward without thinking, her gaze fixed upward, her expression shifting into something almost childlike in its wonder.
"...It's beautiful."
More people gathered around them, their attention drawn to the sky as the colors reflected in their eyes.
Lyra moved closer. Without realizing-Without thinking-
Her hand reached out.
And found his.
Kael stilled.
Her fingers wrapped around his hand naturally, pulling him slightly forward as she stepped closer to get a better view.
"...Come on," she said softly, not even looking at
him.
And for once-Kael didn't resist.
His hand remained in hers. Warm. Steady.
He didn't pull away. Didn't question it.
Because she hadn't done it out of hesitation.
Or obligation.
She had done it-Without thinking.
And that made it different.
Behind them-David froze. Then slowly-A grin spread across his face.
"...Finally," he muttered.
Elira glanced at him.
"...What?"
"Nothing," David said quickly, still smiling.
"Just enjoying the view."
She narrowed her eyes slightly. "...You're strange."
"And yet you're still talking to me."
"That doesn't mean I like it."
"It means you don't hate it."
Elira looked away. But she didn't deny it. ↓
In front of them-
The fireworks continued, lighting up the night in waves of color and sound.
Lyra's grip on Kael's hand remained.
Unconscious.
Unwavering.
And Kael-
Didn't let go.
His gaze shifted briefly from the sky-
To her.
And for the first time-
He didn't feel the need to look away.
