Chapter 8 - : Dangerous Games

By now—

It had become routine.

Not official.

Not spoken.

But expected.

Seraphina no longer avoided him.

And Adrian—

No longer pretended not to notice.

They spoke.

Briefly. Casually.

In passing moments that meant nothing…

And somehow—

Everything.

"Adrian."

He paused mid-step.

Turned.

She was leaning lightly against one of the stone pillars, arms folded, watching him.

That was new.

"You called me," he said calmly.

"I did."

A small pause.

"You're late."

His brow furrowed slightly.

"…Late?"

"For the afternoon walk," she said simply.

Silence.

Adrian studied her.

"I don't recall agreeing to that."

Her lips curved faintly.

"You didn't."

A beat.

"I assumed."

Something in his expression shifted.

Not quite amusement.

Not quite warning.

"…You assume a lot."

"And you notice everything," she replied smoothly.

A pause.

Then—

He exhaled softly.

"…Where are we going?"

Her smile deepened.

"Nowhere."

And just like that—

She pushed off the pillar and walked past him.

Not checking if he would follow.

But he did.

The Walk

They moved through the quieter side of the church grounds.

Not too close.

Not too far.

Silence lingered between them—

But it wasn't empty anymore.

It was… aware.

"You've changed," Adrian said after a while.

Seraphina glanced at him.

"…Have I?"

"You speak more."

"Maybe I'm getting comfortable."

The words were light.

But they carried weight.

"With the church?" he asked.

She held his gaze for a second longer than necessary.

"…Maybe."

A pause.

"Or maybe," she added softly, "I just found something interesting."

That—

Made him stop.

She took two more steps before realizing he wasn't beside her anymore.

She turned.

He was watching her.

Not casually.

Not lightly.

"…And what would that be?" he asked.

Her expression didn't change.

But her eyes—

Darkened slightly.

"You."

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

Adrian's jaw tightened just slightly.

"That's not something you should say so easily."

"Why not?"

"Because you don't mean it."

A pause.

Seraphina stepped closer.

Slow.

Measured.

"And if I do?"

Now—

They were too close.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel it.

That tension.

That pull.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't step back.

"…Then you should reconsider."

Her lips curved.

"You say that like it's a warning."

"It is."

A beat.

"…From you?" she asked softly.

Silence.

Then—

"From both of us."

That—

Made her pause.

Just for a second.

Then she stepped back.

Smiled again.

Lighter this time.

"You take things too seriously."

"And you don't take them seriously enough."

A small laugh escaped her.

"Maybe that's why this works."

Another pause.

"…This?" he repeated.

She tilted her head slightly.

"This… whatever it is."

Neither of them defined it.

Because the moment they did—

It would become real.

The chapel was quiet.

Dimly lit.

Empty—

Except for one.

Adrian sat inside the confessional, eyes closed, hands loosely clasped together.

Routine.

Discipline.

Control.

That was how he kept everything in place.

That was how he kept himself—

In place.

The door creaked softly.

Footsteps followed.

Light.

Unhurried.

Familiar.

He didn't need to look.

He already knew.

The partition remained between them.

A thin barrier.

Wood and shadow.

But it wasn't enough.

"…Bless me, Father…"

Her voice was soft.

Then—

A pause.

And when she spoke again—

"…for I've been a bad girl."

Silence.

Adrian's eyes opened slowly.

Tension filled the space instantly.

"…Seraphina."

Her soft laugh followed.

"What?" she murmured. "Isn't that how this works?"

His jaw tightened slightly.

"No."

A pause.

Then, controlled—

Measured—

"It's 'Father, forgive me, for I have sinned.'"

Another soft laugh.

"You're very strict."

"This isn't a game."

The words came firmer this time.

Silence followed.

But it didn't break the tension.

It deepened it.

"…And what if it is?" she asked quietly.

A beat.

"What if I just wanted to see how far I could push you?"

Adrian's grip tightened slightly against his hand.

"You shouldn't."

"Why?"

The question was softer now.

Less teasing.

More… something else.

"…Because you won't like the answer."

A pause.

Then—

"And what answer is that?"

Silence.

Longer this time.

He didn't respond.

Couldn't.

Because the truth—

Was dangerous.

And he knew it.

On the other side—

Seraphina leaned slightly closer to the partition.

"…You're holding back," she whispered.

His breath stilled.

"…Yes."

The admission was quiet.

But real.

And for the first time—

She didn't smile.

"…Why?"

Another pause.

Then—

"Because I should."

The words were firm.

Final.

But something beneath them—

Wasn't.

Seraphina leaned back slowly.

"…That's not a very satisfying answer."

"No," he agreed quietly.

"It's not."

Silence settled again.

But this time—

It felt different.

Less like a game.

More like a line.

One they had both seen.

One neither of them had crossed.

Yet.

Seraphina stood.

The faint sound of movement breaking the stillness.

"…You're no fun," she murmured lightly.

But her voice lacked its usual teasing edge.

She turned to leave.

"…Seraphina."

She paused.

Not turning back.

"…Don't do that again."

A beat.

Then—

"Do what?"

Silence.

Then—

"…Test me."

Her lips curved slightly.

"…I wasn't testing you."

A pause.

"…I was curious."

And then—

She left.

The door closed softly behind her.

Adrian remained where he was.

Still.

Silent.

But his control—

Was no longer untouched.

He exhaled slowly, running a hand over his face.

"…This is a problem."

Because curiosity—

Had crossed into something else.

Something heavier.

Something harder to control.
