Chapter 17 - : Quiet After the Storm

The days that followed were… peaceful.

Not ordinary. Not neutral.

But quiet.

Adrian had accepted what had happened.

Not because it was easy.

Not because it was right.

But because it was theirs.

He carried himself differently now.

Not distant, not cold—just… aware.

Aware of what had shifted.

Of what could never be undone.

Seraphina moved through the church as she always had.

Graceful, calm, collected.

Her presence had become part of the rhythm here, part of the background hum of chapel life.

No one suspected anything.

Not the nuns.

Not the congregation.

Not the other priests.

And neither Adrian nor Seraphina said a word.

There were glances, subtle, fleeting, full of meaning, but always unnoticed by anyone else.

Some mornings, Adrian would catch her in the chapel, kneeling in quiet prayer, eyes closed.

The sunlight fell across her face just so, and for a moment—he almost allowed himself to feel… peace.

Some afternoons, Seraphina would find him at the library, pouring over texts or sermon notes, the intensity in his gaze a quiet echo of the man he had always been.

And she would smile faintly, letting the moment stretch, letting herself enjoy that stolen calm.

They were safe.

They were… alone.

Until the night air shifted.

********

The church doors opened late, a quiet creak that seemed to echo unnaturally in the empty halls.

Adrian had been walking near the back garden, contemplating scripture, when he heard the soft footsteps approaching.

Two men appeared, modestly dressed, claiming to seek shelter for the night.

"Good evening," one said politely. "We only need a place to rest for a while."

Seraphina froze instantly.

Not because of the request—she had seen many travelers—but because she knew.

Knew exactly who they were.

Her pulse spiked.

Her father's men.

They weren't random travelers.

They had come for her.

Her peaceful days—the stolen quiet they had enjoyed—were over.

She glanced at Adrian, her expression carefully neutral.

He noticed the shift. The subtle tension, the stiffening of her shoulders.

"…Everything okay?" he asked softly.

Seraphina forced herself to smile faintly.

"Yes. Just… guests. Nothing more."

But inside, panic clawed at her chest.

The men were calm, polite, and entirely unaware of the storm they had just unleashed in her mind.

Seraphina knew that in a matter of hours, she would have to face questions she wasn't ready for.

Decisions she wasn't prepared to make.

And the quiet she had cherished…

The secret she had shared with Adrian…

All of it—was in danger.

Because now, the past was arriving at her doorstep.

And she couldn't stop it.
