Chapter 43 - The Midnight Breach

The old shipping docks of the city were a graveyard of rusted iron and broken dreams. Fog rolled off the black water of the harbor, thick and smelling of salt and industrial oil. It was the kind of place where things stayed buried, but tonight, Xavier was here to dig up the truth.

Xavier sat in the back of the armored SUV, checking the slide on his sidearm. Beside him, Seraphina sat with a tablet in her lap, her face illuminated by the cool blue light of the screen. She was the "General" in the van, using the Vane Global satellite network to feed live thermal data to the team.

"They have four sentries on the north perimeter," Seraphina whispered, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her. "Two more on the roof of Warehouse 7. Xavier, there's a massive heat signature underground. That has to be the server hub."

"Chidi, you hear that?" Xavier said into his comms.

"Copy that, Lion," Chidi's voice crackled back, low and dangerous. "Zane is already in position on the crane. Efe is ready to drop the curtain. On your command."

Xavier looked at Seraphina. He reached out and squeezed her hand. "Stay in the vehicle. If the perimeter is breached, the driver has orders to get you to the safe house immediately. Do you understand?"

"I understand," she said, leaning in to press a quick, fierce kiss to his cheek. "But don't make me wait too long. I have a board meeting at nine, and I refuse to go without my husband."

Xavier stepped out into the biting cold of the night. He moved like a shadow, his boots silent on the gravel. He met Chidi at the edge of the fence. With a quick snip of the wire, they were inside.

"Now," Xavier muttered.

Suddenly, every light in the dock district went black. Efe had pulled the master switch on the local grid. In the sudden darkness, the Syndicate guards panicked. They reached for their night-vision goggles, but they weren't fast enough.

Thwip. Thwip.

The two guards on the roof slumped over, neutralized by Zane's suppressed rifle from three hundred yards away.

Xavier and Chidi breached the side door of Warehouse 7. Inside, the air was freezing, and the sound of their breathing echoed against the high metal ceiling. They moved through the labyrinth of shipping crates until they reached a heavy steel floor plate.

"This is it," Chidi said, gesturing to the hidden hydraulic lift.

They descended into the earth, the temperature rising as they approached the server hub. When the lift doors opened, they were met with a wall of red light and the hum of cooling fans. Standing in the center of the room was a man in a tailored grey suit, holding a tablet. He didn't look like a soldier; he looked like an accountant for the devil.

"Xavier Ugochukwu," the man said, not even looking up. "The Syndicate was impressed by your work in Lagos. It's a shame you've chosen to align yourself with a dying empire like the Vanes."

"The Vane Empire isn't dying," Xavier said, stepping into the light. "It's being reborn. And your 'interest' payment is cancelled."

The man smiled, a cold, empty expression. "We don't accept cancellations. We only accept liquidations."

At that moment, six mercenaries stepped out from the shadows behind the servers, their weapons leveled. But they didn't count on Chidi.

The mountain of a man didn't wait for a command. He charged forward, a roar echoing in the small space. He was a force of nature, throwing one guard into a rack of servers with enough force to send sparks flying across the room.

Xavier moved with surgical precision. He disarmed the nearest guard with a wrist-lock and a snap, using the man as a human shield as the other mercenaries opened fire. The room turned into a chaos of muzzle flashes and shattered glass.

"Efe! Now!" Xavier shouted into his mic.

From the SUV, Efe triggered the "Digital Spike." Every screen in the room turned white, a high-pitched frequency shrieking from the speakers that sent the mercenaries to their knees, clutching their ears.

Xavier walked up to the man in the grey suit, who was now trembling. He took the tablet from his hand and looked at the data. It was a list of every politician and judge the Syndicate had in their pocket.

"This isn't just about the Emerald Project," Xavier realized, his eyes widening. "You were using the Vane infrastructure to build a blackmail network."

"It's how the world works, Xavier," the man hissed, blood leaking from his ear.

"Not anymore," Xavier said. He looked at Chidi, who was standing over the last of the unconscious guards. "Pack up the servers. We're taking this back to the mansion. Seraphina is going to have a lot of fun with these names."

As they made their way back up to the surface, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon. Xavier climbed back into the SUV, his face covered in soot but his spirit unbreakable.

Seraphina looked at the servers they were carrying. "Is that it?"

"That's the keys to the city, Seraphina," Xavier said, pulling her into his side. "The Syndicate just handed us the weapons to destroy them."
