Chapter 67 - The Breath of Life

The red light above the operating theater finally flickered out.

I stood up so fast my head spun, but her hand was already there, steadying me. The Ice Queen didn't let go of my arm as the heavy double doors pushed open. A surgeon stepped out, pulling his mask down, his forehead beaded with sweat. Those few seconds of silence felt like an eternity. I felt like I was back on the street, breathless and desperate, waiting for a miracle I couldn't afford.

"The transplant was a success," the surgeon said, a tired smile touching his face. "His vitals are strong. He's a fighter, just like you said."

The air rushed out of my lungs in a sob I couldn't hold back. I sank into the nearest plastic chair, burying my face in my hands. The weight of the world—the forged signatures, the board meetings, the lies to protect her father's company—it all vanished. My brother was going to live.

"I told you," she whispered, sitting beside me. She didn't mind the sterile, uncomfortable hospital chair. She leaned her head against my shoulder, her fingers interlaced with mine. "He's safe now. The contract is fulfilled, and your debt to the world is paid."

"It's more than a debt," I said, looking at her. "Without you, I'd still be begging for a bed in a public ward. You gave him a life, and you gave me..." I trailed off, looking at the gold band on my finger.

"I gave you a headache and a corporate war," she joked softly, the first real bit of humor I had ever heard from her.

An hour later, they allowed us into the recovery room. The room was quiet, filled only with the rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor. My brother looked pale, but his skin didn't have that sickly grey tint anymore. His chest rose and fell in a deep, healthy rhythm.

I sat by the bed and took his hand. It was warm.

"He'll wake up soon," she said, standing by the window where the morning sun was hitting the glass towers of the city in the distance. "And when he does, he won't wake up to a brother who is hiding in the shadows. He'll wake up to a man who owns a seat at the table."

I looked from my brother to the woman I had married as a stranger. "What about the Board? They saw us at the hospital. They saw the way I looked at you. They aren't going to believe it's just a business arrangement anymore."

The Ice Queen turned back to me, the light catching the sharp, beautiful lines of her face. "Let them wonder. Let them whisper. I spent my whole life worrying about what the Board thought of my father's legacy. But today, I realized that the legacy isn't the company. It's the people we protect."

She walked over and placed her hand on top of mine and my brother's. "Monday is coming. The world expects a press conference about the merger. But I think I'd rather give them a story about a family."

I looked at her, and for the first time, I didn't see a Billionaire or a CEO. I saw the woman who had fought for me when no one else would.
