Chapter 4 - In the Shadow of Death - The Arrival of Guru Kailash

The atmosphere inside the cave had become colder and more terrifying than a graveyard. Maya remained on her knees, her hands still resting on the unconscious bodies of Dev and Rudra. But her gaze was now fixed straight ahead, where from the suffocating darkness of the cave emerged one, two, three... no, a total of three terrifying shadows.

Maya's eyes widened to their absolute limits in pure terror. Cold sweat dripped down her forehead and seeped into her eyes, causing a sharp, stinging sensation [Touch]. It felt as though thorns were piercing her throat. Her mouth had gone completely dry from fear, leaving a strange, bitter, and salty tang on her tongue —the unmistakable taste of cold sweat and the dread of impending death.

That same putrid stench of rotting flesh and death [Smell] began to permeate the air once again, so toxic it felt like it was rotting her lungs from the inside. Maya's hands began to tremble violently. Shaking, she raised her palms toward the advancing Prana-Jivis.

"Va... Vayu-astra!" she tried to scream, her voice cracking as she panted.

But nothing happened. Maya suddenly realized there was a terrifying, hollow emptiness inside her body. Her entire reservoir of Prana-shakti, every single drop of her life force, had been completely drained trying to heal Dev and Rudra and drag them back from the jaws of death.

Maya gritted her teeth, gathered whatever fragmented willpower she had left, and tried again. A very faint, pathetic puff of wind escaped her palms... but it was so incredibly weak that it dissipated into the heavy cave air long before it could even reach the monsters. She was utterly, completely helpless.

Suddenly, one of the four Prana-Jivis unhinged its horrifying jaw. A long, sticky, grotesque tongue lolled out, and it unleashed a deafening shriek that shook the very foundations of the cave—SSSKKKREEECHHH!! [Sound]

The moment it shrieked, the beast charged toward Maya like a rabid animal. Thud... Thud... Thud... The sound of its massive, heavy footsteps made the ground tremble beneath her knees. Mid-sprint, the monster clapped its hands together, and the red, pulsing flesh of its arms melted, morphing into a long, terrifying red broadsword!

Maya shuddered to her very core at the sight. Death was quite literally dancing right in front of her face. But she was not the type to surrender. Her friends lay unconscious right behind her. If she moved, if she stepped aside, both Dev and Rudra would be slaughtered.

"Vayu-astra... Vayu-astra... Vayu-astra!" Maya began to chant like a madwoman, her voice breaking and stuttering, desperately praying for a miracle.

But the demon was already upon her.

Seeing death this close, Maya tightly squeezed her eyes shut in sheer terror and bowed her head. 'I'm so sorry, Rudra... Dev...' she thought to herself, bracing for the end.

And right then...

An incredibly sharp, freezing gust of wind [Touch] crashed against Maya's face. The gust was so powerful that it whipped her hair violently backward.

And cutting through that gust of wind... echoed a very subtle, yet soul-chilling sound.

Swoosh... SHHHING!! [Sound]

It was the sound of a perfectly clean, hyper-fast slice. As if someone had just sliced through soft butter with a red-hot knife.

Maya noticed something incredibly bizarre. That heavy, thundering sound of the demon's sprint—Thud... Thud...—suddenly decelerated. Thud... Thud... Drag... It sounded as if its legs had suddenly forgotten how to carry its own weight.

Trembling, Maya slowly opened her eyes and lifted her head.

She couldn't believe what she was seeing. That monstrous Prana-Jivi was standing right in front of her, but its momentum had completely died. Its massive body was wobbling weirdly, swaying as if all its internal machinery had been abruptly shut down.

Its grip on that fleshy red broadsword... went slack. With a loud CLANG! [Sound], the blade slipped from its fingers and hit the stone floor.

And then, the colossal demon collapsed onto its knees. THUD!

Maya was still lost in total confusion, trying to process what had just happened, when suddenly... her eyes widened in absolute shock and horror.

A razor-thin red line appeared right across the center of the Prana-Jivi's thick neck. And the very next second...

Its entire, horrifying head detached from its body! [Sight]

The severed head hit the ground and rolled... rolled... rolled... stopping right in front of Maya's knees. Its glowing yellow eyes were still frozen wide in a look of absolute bewilderment.

Maya's breath hitched in her throat. She slowly raised her gaze to the demon's headless torso.

Splat... Crunch... Sssih... [Sound]

Right before her eyes, the rest of the demon's body began to fall apart like a house of cards. It had been sliced into five perfectly precise, symmetrical pieces! The chunks of its dismembered body fell to the ground one by one, thick black blood pouring from the clean cuts.

Maya was completely paralyzed with shock. This had all happened at such an incomprehensible speed that there hadn't even been time to blink. Her gaze slowly drifted away from the pile of mutilated flesh and looked further ahead.

The air had suddenly been saturated with an incredibly calm, yet overwhelmingly heavy and oppressive energy. Mixed with the metallic stench of fresh blood [Smell], there was now a strange, pure, and chillingly crisp fragrance lingering in the cave.

Standing there, right between Maya and the remaining three demons at the cave's entrance... was a man.

Roughly six feet tall, with broad shoulders and a rock-solid, incredibly sturdy back. He stood with his back turned to Maya. His posture was perfectly straight, and his sheer presence was so suffocatingly dominant that the remaining three demons instinctively took a fearful step backward.

The man slowly turned his head, looking half-way over his shoulder, and met Maya's gaze with impossibly calm, unfazed eyes.

Just then, Maya's eyes fell upon the man's right hand.

His arm was hanging casually by his side, but... his index finger was no ordinary finger.

His index finger had completely transformed into an incredibly sharp, gleaming, silver blade! And from the very tip of that finger-blade... the fresh, hot, and thick blood of the slaughtered Prana-Jivi was dripping onto the rocky floor.

Drip... Drip... Drip... [Sound]

Maya's mind went completely blank. The moment she recognized the man, a strange sparkle returned to her eyes, followed instantly by hot tears of profound relief. From her dry, trembling lips, only a single, reverent whisper escaped, echoing softly through the dead silence of the cavern...

"Kailash... Guru ji..."
