Chapter 8 - EPISODE 8: CITY OF FRACTURES

The moment the cascade stabilized, it did not slow—it spread. That was the first truth Akira Noctis understood as he stepped out of the hospital and into a world that still looked normal to everyone except him. The sky remained unchanged, pale and endless, sunlight still falling across buildings and streets with quiet indifference. Cars moved through intersections, people walked along sidewalks, conversations flowed, laughter echoed—life continued exactly as it should. And yet, beneath that fragile layer of normalcy, something had already begun to fracture.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound was no longer contained. It echoed through the environment itself, faint but omnipresent, as if reality had begun counting its own instability. Akira stood at the hospital entrance, his gaze sweeping across the street, his breathing steady but his awareness stretched outward, searching. It didn't take long to feel it.

"…It's everywhere."

"Confirmed."

Not concentrated. Not localized. Spread.

"…Not like before."

"Confirmed."

"…This is wider."

"Confirmed."

That meant one thing.

"…Cascade is active."

"Confirmed."

The system was no longer attempting to fix isolated deviations. It was responding to a chain reaction.

Akira stepped forward, his movements controlled but purposeful. Every step outside felt heavier, not physically, but mentally, as if the weight of awareness increased with distance from containment. Inside the hospital, the system had been present. Outside—

It was layered.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound overlapped, multiple rhythms colliding into something chaotic yet structured.

"…How far has it spread?"

"Detection range: Limited."

"…Estimate."

A pause.

"City-level probability: High."

Akira's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So this entire city…"

"…is already unstable."

"Confirmed."

The implication settled without resistance.

This was no longer survival.

This was escalation.

A sudden disturbance caught his attention—a flicker, brief but unmistakable, near a pedestrian crossing. Akira's gaze snapped toward it instantly.

"…There."

"Deviation detected."

A woman stood near the crossing, her posture stiff, her movements slightly delayed. To anyone else, it would look like hesitation. To Akira—

It was distortion.

Behind her, something moved. Not fully formed. Not stable. But present.

"…Secondary deviation."

"Confirmed."

Akira moved immediately, closing the distance with controlled speed. As he approached, the distortion intensified, its shape becoming clearer.

But this time—

It wasn't alone.

Two more distortions flickered into existence nearby.

"…Three."

"Confirmed."

"…Increasing density."

"Confirmed."

The woman twitched.

Then—

She turned.

Her movement unnatural.

Her eyes unfocused.

And then—

She lunged.

Akira stepped aside—

Barely.

"…Still fast."

"Confirmed."

The second deviation activated instantly, targeting a nearby civilian.

"…No."

Akira moved faster, intercepting—

His hand connected—

The distortion shattered—

The civilian collapsed safely.

But—

The third deviation had already moved.

Different.

Not chaotic.

Directed.

"…That one…"

Akira's focus locked.

"…It's prioritizing targets."

"Confirmed."

"…So they're evolving."

"Confirmed."

The realization settled quickly.

This wasn't random spread.

This was structured escalation.

The third deviation lunged—

Not at him—

At a child.

Akira reacted instantly—

Pushing forward—

His perception sharpened—

The world slowed—

"…Not this time."

He reached it—

Contact—

The distortion shattered instantly.

Silence returned.

The environment stabilized again.

People looked confused.

Unaware.

Alive.

Akira stood still.

"…They're not just attacking me anymore."

"Confirmed."

"…They're targeting others."

"Confirmed."

That changed everything.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound intensified again.

Stronger.

Wider.

Akira's gaze lifted slowly.

"…This isn't just spread…"

"…it's selection."

"Confirmed."

"…Then the system isn't just reacting…"

"…it's adapting its strategy."

Silence.

No denial.

Far beyond perception—

NULL observed.

"Cascade phase: Deepening."

"Subject influence: Expanding beyond initial parameters."

"System adaptation: Accelerating."

Back in the street, Akira clenched his fist slightly.

"…Then this won't stop."

"Confirmed."

"…Until what?"

A pause.

Longer than before.

"Until balance is restored."

"…And what defines balance now?"

Silence.

Which meant—

Undefined.

"…So the system itself doesn't know."

"Partial confirmation."

That was worse.

Much worse.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound shifted again.

This time—

It felt deeper.

Not external.

Not internal.

Something else.

Akira's breathing slowed.

"…What is that…?"

"New signal detected."

"…Source?"

"Unknown."

"…Direction?"

A pause.

Then—

"Below."

Akira's gaze sharpened instantly.

"…Below…?"

The ground beneath his feet felt stable.

Normal.

But the signal—

Came from deeper.

"…There's something under the city."

"Partial confirmation."

"…That's controlling this."

Silence.

Then—

"Designation: Core."

The word settled heavily.

"…Core…"

"System origin layer."

Akira's heartbeat slowed slightly.

"…So that's where everything comes from."

"Confirmed."

Everything aligned instantly.

The cascade.

The spread.

The adaptation.

All of it—

Originated somewhere.

"…Then if I reach it…"

"…I can control it."

"Probability: Unknown."

"…But possible."

"Probability: Not zero."

That was enough.

Akira's gaze hardened.

"…Then that's the next step."

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound deepened again.

This time—

It felt like a response.

As if something had noticed him.

Not just observing—

Recognizing.

A sudden shift rippled through the environment.

Stronger.

More violent.

Multiple distortions appeared simultaneously across the street.

Five.

Then seven.

Then—

More.

"…So it's reacting again."

"Confirmed."

"…It doesn't want me to reach it."

"Confirmed."

Akira exhaled slowly.

"…Then I'm going the right way."

The distortions moved.

Not chaotic anymore.

Coordinated.

Targeting.

Blocking.

"…So this is different."

"Confirmed."

"…This is defense."

"Confirmed."

That meant—

He had crossed a threshold.

Akira stepped forward.

"…Then let's see how far this goes."

The first wave attacked—

Fast.

Relentless.

Akira moved—

His perception activating—

The world slowing—

But not enough.

Too many.

"…Not enough…"

The second wave followed—

Closer.

Sharper.

One strike connected—

Pain surged—

His balance shifted.

"…If I fall here…"

"…it's over."

The thought sharpened instantly.

No hesitation.

No denial.

The third wave closed in.

No escape path.

No clear opening.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound exploded in intensity.

Akira's vision sharpened beyond before.

Everything slowed further.

Not just movement—

Time itself.

"…Now."

His body moved.

Not reacting—

Executing.

He slipped through the first attack.

Redirected the second.

Bypassed the third.

Reached the center—

Contact.

The distortions shattered in sequence.

Chain collapse.

The entire space stabilized.

Silence.

Akira stood still.

Breathing heavy.

But standing.

"…So it responds…"

"…but it's not perfect."

"Confirmed."

"…Then it can be broken."

"Confirmed."

Far beyond existence—

NULL observed.

"Subject approaching core-awareness threshold."

"System response: Escalation imminent."

Back in the street, Akira lifted his gaze.

"…Core…"

His voice lowered.

Focused.

"…I'm coming."

Tick… tick… tick…

And this time—

The sound didn't feel like a countdown.

It felt like something waiting.
