Chapter 7 - capter 7

A Bengali Story: The Smell of the Soil

There was a small village called Shalbon. It was surrounded by green paddy fields, with a narrow muddy road running through it. Along that road stood simple clay houses. In one of those houses lived Rahat—a simple Bengali boy.

Rahat's father was a farmer. Every morning, before the sun even rose, he went to the fields. His mother took care of the home, and Rahat went to school. Their life was not rich, but it was peaceful.

One day at school, the teacher said,

"Everyone should have a dream. Tell me, what do you want to be in the future?"

One by one, the students answered—doctor, engineer, teacher.

Rahat stayed quiet. The teacher looked at him and asked,

"Rahat, what do you want to be?"

Rahat lowered his head and softly said,

"Sir, I want to be a farmer like my father."

Some students laughed. But the teacher didn't. He smiled and said,

"That is the greatest dream. Because without farmers, none of us could survive."

That day, Rahat felt proud.

Time passed. One day, a disaster struck the village—a flood. The water covered the fields, destroyed the crops, and threatened their homes. People became hopeless.

Rahat's father said,

"We cannot give up. We will start again."

After the floodwater went down, the villagers returned to the fields. With muddy feet and tired bodies, they planted crops again. Rahat worked beside his father. His hands got hurt, his body grew weak, but he didn't stop.

After a few months, the fields turned green again. Seeing that green, Rahat understood something—this is the strength of Bengalis. No matter how hard life gets, they never give up.

One evening, as the red sun was setting, Rahat asked his father,

"Father, why do we work so hard?"

His father smiled and replied,

"Because this soil is our life. We live for it."

Rahat looked at the sky and felt something deep inside him. He realized he was not just a boy—he was a Bengali. Inside him lived courage, struggle, and love.

This is not just Rahat's story—this is the story of every Bengali.

People who smile through hardship, never give up, and love their land deeply. 🌾
