Chapter 54 - Episode 4: Memories That Bite Back

Rani woke up slowly, the morning sun spilling across the floor.

Something felt… off.

Not wrong. Not dangerous. Just different.

The first flicker

She walked into the kitchen, smiling softly.

"Good morning," she said to Meera.

Meera froze. Something in that tone, that pause, told her the system had taken another piece.

"Morning," Meera said quietly, forcing her usual warmth.

Rani picked up her favorite mug, one Meera had left filled with coffee notes and doodles.

Her hand paused on the handle.

"…Why does this feel… familiar?" she whispered.

A memory half-recalled

Later, Rani found the folded note under her pillow:

"You make me brave."

She stared at it.

Somewhere in her mind, a spark: a feeling of love, protection… trust.

But the memory itself? gone.

The emotional horror

Rani's eyes met Meera's.

"I… I feel something," she said, voice trembling.

Meera's chest tightened.

"Yes," Meera whispered. "It's us."

Rani shook her head.

"No. It's… different. Like I remember the feeling, but not the why. Or the who."

The first crack of fear

Meera grabbed her hands.

"You still love me, don't you?" she asked.

Rani hesitated. A pause too long.

"I… I think I do. But I can't tell. It's like… loving a shadow."

Emotional tension

Meera felt tears burn behind her eyes.

Every smile, every laugh, every small moment of connection now felt like stealing time back from the system.

She had to remind Rani. Constantly.

Subtle victories

Meera whispered tiny memories into Rani's mind:

"Do you remember the first time we got caught in the rain?"

"You made me laugh until my throat hurt."

"Even now, I would choose you—every single time."

Rani's face softened. She remembered… not fully. Not completely. But enough to hold Meera's hand tighter.

Final emotional beat

That night, Rani lay awake, staring at Meera.

"I don't know all of us anymore," she said softly.

Meera kissed her forehead.

"I don't need you to. I just need you here. That's enough."

Rani closed her eyes. A tiny smile formed.

For now, the love was fragile, uncertain… but alive.
