The apartment was quieter than usual.
Rani sat on the couch, flipping through one of Meera's memory notebooks. Her fingers hesitated over doodles and notes she didn't fully recognize, yet something deep inside her stirred.
Meera watched silently from the doorway, heart pounding. Every moment of Rani's confusion felt like a knife in her chest.
Small victories
Rani traced a page with a shaky smile:
"…I feel… like I know this," she murmured.
Meera stepped closer.
"Yes," she whispered, kneeling beside her. "It's us. Every piece of us you still feel… that's enough."
Rani tilted her head, still uncertain.
"I don't know… why it feels so familiar," she admitted.
Meera smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
"Because your heart remembers. That's the part the system can't touch."
A subtle threat
Outside, a notification appeared on Meera's phone:
"Memory disruption detected. Accelerated adaptation likely. Protect subject immediately."
Her chest tightened.
The system was evolving. Every memory anchor she placed yesterday could be undone tonight.
Emotional tension
Rani leaned into Meera instinctively, seeking comfort she didn't fully understand.
"I… I feel scared," she whispered.
Meera hugged her tighter.
"I know," she said softly. "But we fight together. Even if the system tries to tear us apart, we fight with what we have left."
Rani closed her eyes, trembling.
"…I just want to feel safe," she murmured.
"You are," Meera whispered. "With me, always."
Foreshadowing
That night, as Meera watched Rani sleep, she placed a small note under her pillow:
"Even if the world forgets us, I'll always remember you."
Rani stirred, fingers brushing it unconsciously. A faint spark of recognition lit her eyes.
It was fragile. It was small. But it was hope.
