Chapter 52 - The Fear in Their Eyes

The silence inside the chamber did not disappear after the incident.

If anything—

it became heavier.

More cautious.

As though even the air itself had begun avoiding Leo.

No one spoke immediately after the pressure vanished.

The two men from the council remained several steps away, their bodies visibly tense despite their attempts to hide it. The taller man's hand rested near the weapon at his waist unconsciously, while the second watched Leo with narrowed eyes filled with open calculation.

Not curiosity.

Not concern.

Assessment.

Leo remained on one knee, breathing unevenly.

The black lines beneath the skin of his wrist still burned faintly, spreading cold discomfort through his arm with every heartbeat.

And deep inside his awareness—

the whispers had not completely vanished.

They lingered quietly now.

Waiting.

"He released resonance."

The second council member spoke first, his voice lower than before.

The taller man did not look away from Leo.

"…Yes."

The instructor stepped forward immediately.

"It was unstable."

"That does not matter."

The taller man's answer came sharply.

"The fact it manifested at all changes everything."

Leo frowned slightly.

"…What is resonance?"

No one answered him immediately.

Which only deepened the tension filling the room.

The instructor finally spoke.

"A reaction between your awareness and theirs."

The word theirs sent another cold feeling through Leo's chest.

The taller council member continued watching him carefully.

"Has he heard direct communication before?"

The instructor hesitated.

That hesitation alone answered the question.

Silence.

Then the taller man cursed quietly beneath his breath.

Leo's heartbeat slowed faintly.

Because now it was obvious.

Whatever was happening to him—

it was far worse than even the instructor expected.

"We should inform the upper council immediately," the second man said.

The instructor's expression hardened instantly.

"No."

The taller man looked toward him sharply.

"No?"

"He remains stable."

The answer came calmly.

"Barely," the taller man replied.

The chamber fell silent again.

Then—

"He is still human."

Those words struck Leo harder than expected.

Still human.

Not fully.

Not certainly.

Still.

The taller man finally stepped closer again, though more carefully this time.

"What is your name?"

Leo looked at him cautiously.

"…Leo."

The man studied him quietly.

Then—

"Do you know what happens to failed vessels?"

The instructor moved instantly.

"That is enough."

But the taller man ignored him.

His eyes remained fixed on Leo.

"They lose themselves slowly," he said quietly. "First emotions. Then thoughts. Eventually identity itself disappears."

A faint pause followed.

"And when the transformation completes…"

The man's expression darkened slightly.

"Something else begins looking through their eyes."

The whispers beneath Leo's awareness stirred again.

Very softly.

Fear tightened in his chest immediately.

Not because the man sounded dramatic.

Because he sounded certain.

"That will not happen," the instructor said coldly.

The taller man finally turned toward him.

"You cannot guarantee that."

"No," the instructor admitted quietly.

"But neither can you."

The tension between them sharpened visibly.

And Leo suddenly realized something important.

These men were not united.

Not completely.

Which meant there were disagreements even among those who understood the Watchers.

The second council member spoke carefully.

"The boy should be isolated."

Leo's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Isolated?"

The taller man nodded once.

"Until stability is confirmed."

The instructor's voice became colder.

"He is not a prisoner."

"No," the taller man replied quietly.

"He is a risk."

The chamber fell silent again.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Leo slowly pushed himself upright despite the exhaustion still weighing down his body.

His legs felt weak.

But his thoughts felt worse.

Because for the first time since entering this chamber—

he truly understood something.

The danger was no longer hidden.

Other people knew.

Other people feared him.

The taller man looked directly at Leo once more.

"You should understand this clearly."

His voice lowered slightly.

"If your awareness continues opening…"

A faint pause followed.

"…people will eventually stop seeing you as human."

Those words remained with Leo long after the meeting ended.

The council members eventually left the chamber after several more tense exchanges with the instructor, though Leo noticed something important before they disappeared through the entrance.

Both men avoided standing too close to him.

As though instinct itself warned them unconsciously.

The chamber finally became silent again.

Only Leo and the instructor remained.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then Leo finally asked the question that had been growing inside him since the conversation began.

"…Have people like me existed before?"

The instructor remained still.

"…Yes."

Leo's chest tightened slightly.

"What happened to them?"

A long silence followed.

Then—

"Most died."

The answer came calmly.

"Some transformed."

Leo felt cold immediately.

"…Transformed into what?"

The instructor looked directly at him.

"We do not know."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Leo lowered his gaze toward his wrist again.

The black lines had stopped spreading for now.

But their existence alone no longer felt abstract.

Other people recognized them immediately.

Feared them immediately.

Which meant this mark carried history.

Meaning.

Consequences.

"…What happens now?" Leo asked quietly.

The instructor's expression remained unreadable.

"That depends on you."

The answer frustrated him immediately.

"How?"

The instructor stepped closer.

"Fear accelerates the connection."

Leo froze slightly.

The instructor continued.

"So does obsession. Desperation. Hatred."

A faint pause followed.

"The Watchers respond to instability."

Leo remained silent.

Because lately—

he had felt all of those things.

Fear.

Confusion.

Desperation.

Especially after hearing the whispers.

The instructor's gaze sharpened slightly.

"You must remain calm from now onward."

Leo almost laughed bitterly at that.

Calm?

After learning something ancient might slowly erase his identity?

After discovering people already viewed him as dangerous?

"I don't know how."

The words escaped more quietly than expected.

And for the first time in several days—

the instructor's expression softened slightly.

Only slightly.

But enough to notice.

"That," he said quietly, "is why most fail."

The silence that followed felt strangely less oppressive than before.

Not safe.

Never safe.

But different.

Then suddenly—

voices echoed faintly from outside the chamber.

Several people.

Approaching quickly.

The instructor frowned immediately.

"They should not be here."

The chamber doors opened abruptly moments later.

A young trainee stumbled inside, breathing heavily.

Leo recognized him instantly.

Kael.

The moment Kael entered, his eyes immediately locked onto Leo.

Then—

onto the black lines beneath Leo's wrist.

Silence filled the room instantly.

Kael's expression changed slowly.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something closer to shock.

"…What happened to you?"

Leo opened his mouth slightly.

But before he could answer—

another group of trainees appeared behind Kael near the entrance.

And the moment they saw Leo—

the atmosphere shifted immediately.

Because rumors had already spread.

Leo saw it clearly in their eyes.

The hesitation.

The unease.

The instinctive distance.

One trainee stepped backward unconsciously.

Another whispered something quietly.

Then—

someone said it.

Very softly.

But loud enough.

"…Monster."

The word froze the entire room.

Leo's chest tightened instantly.

Not because the insult hurt.

Because the trainee sounded afraid.

Genuinely afraid.

The whispers beneath Leo's awareness stirred faintly again.

The black mark burned sharply.

And for one terrifying second—

Leo felt something inside himself react to that fear.

Not anger.

Recognition.

The instructor moved immediately.

"Everyone leave. Now."

His voice carried overwhelming authority this time.

The trainees hesitated only briefly before backing away quickly.

But Leo noticed something before they disappeared.

Every single one of them avoided meeting his eyes.

Even Kael.

The chamber doors closed heavily.

Silence returned again.

Leo stood motionless near the center of the room.

Something inside his chest felt hollow now.

Because the council's warning had already begun becoming reality.

People were changing the way they looked at him.

Not because of what he had done.

Because of what he might become.

The instructor watched him carefully.

Then spoke quietly.

"This is why control matters."

Leo lowered his gaze slowly.

The whispers remained silent now.

But the fear inside him did not.

Because for the first time—

he realized something terrifying.

Part of him had enjoyed the fear in their eyes.
