Chapter 54 - The Weight of His Existence

The training grounds no longer felt familiar.

Leo realized that the moment he returned the next morning.

Nothing had physically changed.

The same stone pathways crossed through the compound.

The same wooden arenas stood beneath the pale morning light.

The same groups of trainees moved between buildings carrying weapons, equipment, and training gear.

And yet—

everything felt different now.

Because this time, when people looked at him—

they moved away.

Not openly.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Enough for him to notice.

Enough for silence to follow wherever he walked.

The rumors had spread beyond control overnight.

Leo understood that immediately.

Because now even instructors watched him carefully.

Not casually.

Cautiously.

"…That's him."

"…The one from the northern chamber…"

"…I heard he injured someone without touching them…"

"…Council members appeared because of him…"

"…They say he's cursed…"

The whispers followed him across the compound like shadows.

Some were fearful.

Some curious.

Some fascinated.

But none sounded normal.

Leo kept walking without reacting outwardly.

At least, he tried to.

But every word settled somewhere inside him regardless.

Because part of him understood something terrifying now.

The rumors were no longer completely false.

The black lines beneath his wrist had spread farther again that morning.

Not dramatically.

But enough that hiding them required pulling his sleeve lower than before.

And worse—

the whispers inside his awareness had become more active since yesterday's incident.

Not constant.

But unpredictable.

Sometimes he heard fragments suddenly while walking.

Or sensed emotions from people nearby before they spoke.

Or felt pressure gathering beneath silence itself.

Each moment lasted only seconds.

But every time it happened—

fear followed immediately afterward.

Leo reached the outer edge of the training grounds and stopped.

Several trainees near the weapon racks instantly stiffened the moment they noticed him approaching.

One quietly stepped backward.

Another pretended to reorganize equipment elsewhere.

And within moments—

the entire area subtly emptied.

Leo stood there silently for several seconds.

Then slowly turned away.

For the first time since entering the academy—

he truly understood isolation.

Not physical isolation.

Something worse.

The feeling of existing near others while no longer belonging among them.

"Still pretending not to notice?"

The voice came from behind him unexpectedly.

Leo turned slightly.

Aldric stood several meters away near the edge of the courtyard.

Unlike everyone else—

he showed no visible hesitation approaching.

But his expression was unusually serious today.

Leo looked away briefly.

"…There's nothing to say."

Aldric crossed his arms slowly.

"People are terrified of you."

Straightforward.

Blunt.

Typical.

Leo exhaled quietly.

"I noticed."

A faint silence followed.

Then Aldric stepped closer.

"…So are the rumors true?"

Leo almost laughed bitterly.

Everyone kept asking the same question.

As though he himself understood the answer.

"I don't know what's true anymore."

The honesty of the answer seemed to catch Aldric slightly off guard.

For several moments, the two stood in silence while distant training noises echoed faintly through the compound.

Then Aldric finally spoke again.

"You don't look dangerous."

Leo frowned slightly.

"…What does that mean?"

"It means," Aldric replied calmly, "you look exhausted."

The words struck unexpectedly hard.

Because unlike the others—

Aldric was looking at him directly.

Not the rumors.

Not the fear.

Him.

Leo lowered his gaze briefly.

"…Maybe they're right to be afraid."

Aldric's expression hardened slightly.

"Do you believe that?"

Leo remained silent.

Because after yesterday—

he genuinely did not know anymore.

The pressure burst.

Kael got hurt.

People looked at him like a monster.

And worst of all—

part of him had enjoyed it.

That truth frightened him more than the whispers themselves.

Aldric studied him quietly for several seconds.

Then—

"If you were truly becoming a monster…"

His voice lowered slightly.

"…you wouldn't be this afraid of it."

Leo froze slightly.

The words settled deeply inside him.

Before he could respond—

the atmosphere around the courtyard shifted suddenly.

Several armored figures entered the training grounds through the eastern entrance.

Not ordinary guards.

These men wore dark silver armor marked with unfamiliar symbols across their shoulders.

And the moment they appeared—

the entire compound fell noticeably quieter.

Aldric frowned immediately.

"…Enforcers."

Leo's chest tightened slightly.

"…Who are they?"

Aldric's eyes remained fixed on the newcomers.

"The council's execution division."

Cold silence spread through Leo instantly.

Execution.

The armored figures moved calmly through the grounds without speaking to anyone.

Yet their presence alone changed the atmosphere completely.

Even instructors subtly avoided interfering with their path.

Then—

the lead enforcer stopped.

And slowly turned toward Leo.

The entire courtyard seemed to freeze.

The man's face remained hidden beneath a dark metal helm, but Leo felt the pressure immediately.

Controlled.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

The enforcer began walking toward him.

Nearby trainees quickly moved farther away.

Even Aldric's posture became tense now.

The armored man finally stopped only a few steps from Leo.

For several long moments—

silence remained absolute.

Then—

"You are Leo."

Not a question.

Leo nodded slowly.

The enforcer studied him carefully.

Then his gaze lowered briefly toward Leo's hidden wrist.

And immediately—

the atmosphere sharpened.

The man's hand moved subtly toward the weapon at his waist.

Aldric stepped forward instantly.

"He hasn't done anything."

The enforcer ignored him completely.

His attention remained fixed on Leo.

"You released resonance publicly yesterday."

Leo's heartbeat slowed slightly.

"…I lost control."

"That is irrelevant."

The answer came coldly.

More enforcers had stopped nearby now.

Watching.

Assessing.

Ready.

The lead enforcer stepped closer.

And for the first time since arriving—

Leo felt genuine killing intent directed toward him.

Not overwhelming.

Precise.

Measured.

As though the man had already considered the possibility of executing him.

The whispers beneath Leo's awareness stirred immediately.

The black mark burned sharply.

And suddenly—

the world around him slowed slightly.

Leo sensed movement before it happened.

Tiny shifts.

Subtle reactions.

The enforcers preparing unconsciously in case he lost control again.

Fear spread across the surrounding trainees.

Leo could feel it.

Everywhere.

Heavy.

Sharp.

And horrifyingly—

the whispers liked it.

"…Interesting."

The voice did not come from outside.

It echoed softly inside his mind.

Ancient.

Watching.

Leo's breathing became unstable instantly.

The lead enforcer noticed immediately.

His hand fully gripped his weapon now.

"Contain him."

Everything happened at once.

The surrounding enforcers moved instantly toward Leo.

Nearby trainees panicked and backed away rapidly.

Pressure exploded across the courtyard.

And the whispers inside Leo's mind erupted violently.

"…OPEN—"

"…LET US SEE—"

"…THE DOOR—"

Pain slammed through Leo's skull.

His vision blurred violently.

The black mark spread farther beneath his skin.

Then suddenly—

something terrifying happened.

Everyone around him froze.

Because shadows beneath the courtyard began moving unnaturally.

Not shifting with light.

Moving independently.

Several trainees screamed immediately.

The enforcers stopped mid-motion.

Even Aldric staggered backward slightly.

The shadows around Leo twisted slowly across the ground like living darkness.

And for one horrifying second—

countless faint eyes opened within them.

Silence crashed over the entire courtyard.

Absolute terror spread instantly.

Leo stood frozen at the center of it all, breathing unevenly while the darkness moved around his feet.

He had not done this intentionally.

He could feel that clearly.

Something else had reacted through him.

The whispers became softer suddenly.

Satisfied.

And deep inside the moving darkness—

a voice echoed quietly enough that only Leo heard it.

"…You are opening beautifully."
