Chapter 16 - The Black Glass Mirror

The air in the Hokage's office was heavier than usual, saturated with the scent of old tobacco and the weight of secrets that could incinerate the village. Hiruzen Sarutobi no longer resembled the benevolent leader children saw at the Academy; he looked like an exhausted general facing a chessboard where every piece was a ticking bomb.

With a subtle gesture of his hand, Hiruzen gave a silent command. Instantly, the presences in the ceiling beams and behind the curtains vanished. Nara and Eagle, sensing the gravity of the moment, withdrew without question. For the first time in years, Shin stood alone with the Third—no masks, no codenames.

Shin, now ten years old, remained motionless. His posture was a monument to ANBU discipline, but the necklace beneath his uniform pulsed faintly against his chest—an anchor of humanity amid the political storm he could feel approaching.

— Shin — Hiruzen began, his voice rough, without taking his eyes off the map of Konoha. — The peace you protect in the shadows is cracking. The tension with the Uchiha clan has reached a point of no return. Their isolation has bred resentment that Danzō is eager to harvest.

The Hokage finally looked at Shin. His eyes searched for the maturity the boy had developed far too early.

— I suspect Danzō is manipulating Itachi Uchiha. He's pushing that young man into a dead end, forcing him to choose between blood and the village. If Itachi breaks under that pressure, the result will be a catastrophe even I won't be able to contain.

Shin processed the information with the speed of a neural processor. He knew Itachi's reputation—the genius who graduated from the Academy in a single year, the youngest ANBU captain in history. A mirror of himself, but born under a lineage of curse and fire.

— Do you want me to eliminate him? — Shin's question was direct, devoid of emotion.

— No — Hiruzen sighed, releasing a cloud of gray smoke. — I want you to be the shadow of the shadow. Watch Itachi. Do not let him make a mistake driven by desperation or by the lies of the Root. If he moves toward the abyss, you must be the brake.

Hiruzen stepped forward, placing a hand on Shin's shoulder.

— One genius watching another. Itachi has the Sharingan, but you… you have dominion over what the eye cannot even register. Use your Latent Induction to monitor him. Do not let him perceive your presence, nor allow Danzō to use him as a final pawn.

Shin nodded. He understood what it meant. Itachi was Sasuke's brother—the boy Ino admired so much. If Itachi fell, Sasuke's world would collapse, and by extension, Ino's peace at the Academy would be shattered by the village's instability.

— Understood, Hokage-sama. Itachi Uchiha's frequency will be my absolute priority.

Shin vanished from the office before Hiruzen's smoke had time to disperse.

The First Visual Contact

That same night, Shin positioned himself atop a watchtower near the Uchiha District. He entered Deep Meditation, expanding his sensory radar until he found Itachi's signature.

It was a fascinating and terrifying frequency. Itachi's chakra felt like an ocean of flames contained beneath a thin layer of ice. He sat at the edge of a cliff, watching the village with a melancholy Shin recognized instantly.

For the first time in his career, Shin felt he was observing someone who carried a burden as heavy as his own. Itachi was a genius of the light drowning in shadows; Shin was a monster of the shadows trying to keep one foot in the light because of a girl.

Shin adjusted the necklace beneath his collar. He knew that the slightest mental slip, the smallest failure in his stillness, and Itachi's Sharingan would detect him. It was a dangerous game of mental chess between the two greatest prodigies Konoha had ever produced.

You won't destroy her world, Itachi, Shin thought, tuning into the Uchiha's heartbeat. I will be the void you cannot see—the error you cannot calculate.
