The night after Kabir collapsed felt heavier than any night before.
Tripti sat beside him, her eyes fixed on his pale face. Avinash stood near the window, watching the darkness outside like it might step in at any moment.
Kabir hadn't spoken since they freed him from the shadow.
But something was wrong.
Very wrong.
A cold wind suddenly rushed through the room, even though all the windows were shut.
Tripti's fingers tightened around Kabir's hand.
"Did you feel that?" she whispered.
Avinash didn't turn. His voice came out low and tense.
"It's not over."
The words hung in the air like a warning.
Kabir's fingers twitched.
Tripti leaned closer. "Kabir… can you hear me?"
His lips moved slightly.
And then, in a voice that didn't sound like his own, he whispered:
"You opened it… now it won't close."
Tripti froze.
Avinash rushed to his side. "Kabir! What are you talking about?"
Kabir's eyes suddenly snapped open.
But they weren't his eyes.
They were darker… deeper… like something was looking through him.
"The door… beneath the lake… it remembers you."
Tripti's heart skipped.
"The lake?" she said slowly. "We never went to any—"
She stopped.
A memory flashed in her mind.
A place from her childhood.
A lake she had seen in her dreams again and again.
A place she had never told anyone about.
"How does he know that?" she whispered.
Kabir suddenly sat up, breathing heavily.
This time, his voice was normal.
"I… I saw something," he said, holding his head. "When the shadow left… it showed me a place."
Avinash stepped forward. "What place?"
Kabir looked straight at Tripti.
"A lake… surrounded by dead trees… and beneath it… a door."
Silence.
Tripti stood up slowly.
"That place is real," she said.
They left before sunrise.
None of them spoke much during the journey.
The road felt unfamiliar, even though Tripti somehow knew exactly where to go.
"Some places don't exist on maps… they exist in memory."
The words slipped out of her mouth without thinking.
Avinash glanced at her. "What did you just say?"
Tripti shook her head. "I don't know… it just came to me."
Kabir looked uneasy. "That's exactly how the shadow spoke."
By evening, they reached it.
The lake.
It was exactly as Kabir described.
Still water. No sound. No life.
Dead trees stood like silent guards around it.
The air felt thick… like it was watching them.
Tripti stepped closer.
"I've seen this place before," she whispered.
Avinash frowned. "In dreams?"
She nodded.
Kabir suddenly grabbed her arm.
"Don't go too close," he said. "There's something under the water."
Tripti looked at him. "The door?"
Kabir swallowed. "Yes."
The surface of the lake suddenly rippled.
But there was no wind.
No stone.
No reason.
Avinash stepped back. "That's not normal."
Tripti took a deep breath.
"We didn't come this far to run."
She stepped into the water.
"Tripti, wait!" Avinash shouted.
But she didn't stop.
The cold water rose around her ankles… her knees… her waist.
And then—
The lake pulled her down.
"TRIPTI!"
Avinash and Kabir rushed forward, but she had already disappeared beneath the surface.
Kabir didn't hesitate.
He jumped in.
Avinash followed.
Under the water, everything was silent.
Too silent.
Tripti sank slowly… but she wasn't struggling.
It felt like something was guiding her.
Calling her.
And then she saw it.
The door.
A massive, ancient door at the bottom of the lake.
Covered in strange symbols.
Glowing faintly.
"Some doors are not meant to be opened… but some are meant to be remembered."
The voice echoed in her mind.
Tripti reached out.
Her fingers touched the door.
And suddenly—
She saw everything.
A girl.
Standing near the same lake.
Years ago.
The girl looked exactly like Tripti.
But her eyes were filled with fear.
Behind her… the shadow.
Stronger.
Darker.
Alive.
"You cannot escape me… you belong to this place."
The shadow whispered.
The girl screamed—
And the memory shattered.
Tripti gasped.
Kabir grabbed her arm underwater, pulling her back.
Avinash helped them reach the surface.
They all collapsed on the shore, breathing heavily.
"What happened?" Avinash asked.
Tripti stared at the lake.
"That wasn't just a door," she said.
"It's a memory… a prison."
Kabir looked confused. "Whose memory?"
Tripti's voice shook.
"Mine."
The sky darkened suddenly.
Faster than it should.
The lake began to glow faintly.
Kabir stepped back. "This is bad."
Avinash clenched his fists. "Tell us everything, Tripti."
She hesitated.
Then finally spoke.
"I think… I've been here before."
Kabir frowned. "That's impossible."
Tripti looked at him. "Is it? You were possessed by a shadow we thought wasn't real."
Silence.
She continued.
"When I was a child… I used to have dreams about this place. I thought they were just dreams."
Avinash asked quietly, "And now?"
Tripti whispered:
"Now I think they were memories."
The lake suddenly started bubbling.
A low आवाज (sound) rose from beneath.
Like something was waking up.
Kabir stepped back again. "We need to leave."
Tripti shook her head.
"No."
Avinash looked at her. "Are you crazy?"
Tripti's eyes were fixed on the water.
"Running from the truth doesn't erase it… it only makes it stronger."
Kabir grabbed her shoulders. "Tripti, listen to me! That thing almost killed me!"
Tripti looked at him calmly.
"And it's coming back."
The water exploded upward.
A dark figure began to rise.
The shadow.
But this time… it wasn't weak.
It was complete.
Its form twisted… growing larger… stronger.
And then it spoke.
"You came back… just like I knew you would."
Avinash stepped in front of Tripti. "Stay behind me."
The shadow laughed.
"You cannot protect her… she is the key."
Kabir's voice trembled. "Key… to what?"
The shadow's form stretched toward the lake.
"To opening the door… completely."
Tripti stepped forward.
Avinash grabbed her arm. "Don't!"
But she pulled away.
"What happens if the door opens?" she asked.
The shadow paused.
And then whispered:
"Everything you forgot… will return."
Tripti closed her eyes.
Fragments of memories rushed through her mind.
The lake.
The door.
The shadow.
And that girl.
Herself.
"The past never dies… it waits."
She opened her eyes.
"I'm not afraid anymore," she said.
Kabir shook his head. "You should be."
Tripti looked at him softly.
"I was chosen for a reason."
Avinash's voice cracked. "Tripti, don't do this."
She gave a faint smile.
"Sometimes… the only way to end a nightmare… is to walk back into it."
She turned toward the lake again.
The shadow grew stronger.
The water began to rise.
Kabir whispered, "If she opens that door…"
Avinash finished the sentence:
"Then whatever is inside… comes out."
Tripti took one step forward.
Then another.
The shadow whispered behind her:
"This time… there is no escape."
Tripti didn't stop.
She said softly:
"Then I won't run."
And just as her foot touched the water again—
The ground beneath them cracked.
A loud आवाज echoed.
The lake began to split open.
And from beneath it…
Something far worse than the shadow started to rise.
Kabir whispered in horror:
"This… this wasn't the real enemy…"
Avinash stepped back, his voice barely audible.
"Then what is?"
Tripti stared at the rising darkness.
Her voice came out like a whisper—
But it carried fear for the first time.
"It's what's behind the door."
